Interview With "EO" Director/Writer/Producer Jerzy Skolimowski Nov 21, 2022
    Show notes

"EO" had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, where it stunned audiences with its stripped-down story of following a donkey through modern-day Poland, winning the Jury Prize. With its awe-inspiring cinematography, thoughtful editing, and immersive soundscape, you'd think this was a young man's movie, but the film is, in fact, made by 84-year-old world-renowned Polish filmmaker Jerzy Skolimowski. Jerzy was kind enough to spend a few minutes chatting with me about his latest film, where the idea for the story came from, his dissatisfaction with traditional narrative, the film's themes and importance for environmentalism, and more. Please take a listen below and check out the film if it's playing in your area from Janus Films. Enjoy!

Interviews With "The Menu" Writers Seth Reiss, Will Tracy, Director Mark Mylod & Star Hong Chau Nov 18, 2022
    Show notes

"The Menu" had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and is now playing in theaters from Searchlight Pictures. The film stars an ensemble cast of characters played by Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicholas Hoult, Janet McTeer, Judith Light, and John Leguizamo, among others, who dine at the fine cuisine restaurant of world-renowned chef Julian Slowik, played by Ralph Fiennes. The evening takes a deadly turn for the worse, and the mind games from Chef and his right-hand woman, Elsa, played by Hong Chau, continue in a torturous evening for the guests. Hong Chau was kind enough to spend some time talking with me about her work in the film along with what the last year has been like, also working on Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale" and Kelly Reichardt's "Showing Up." I also had the pleasure of speaking with the screenwriters Seth Reiss and Will Tracy, plus director Mark Mylod. Each conversation reveals another layer to the brilliant inner workings of what makes "The Menu" such a full-course meal, but please be warned, SPOILERS are ahead. Enjoy!

    Show notes

THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture

Our latest throwback review, in anticipation of the release of "She Said," is for Alan J. Paula's 1976 Best Picture-nominee, "All The President's Men" starring Dustin Hoffman, Robert Redford, Jack Warden, Martin Balsam, Hal Holbrook, Jason Robards & Jayne Alexander. The film was considered timely upon its release and has held up as the gold standard for how to craft a story about journalism to this day. Joining me for this throwback review, I have Eve O'Dea, Dan Bayer, Danilo Castro & Brendan Hodges. Tune in as we discuss the all-timer screenplay by William Goldman, the crafts, including its Oscar-winning sound and art direction, the performances, and how it performed during its awards season run in 1976. Thank you for all your support, and enjoy!

Interviews With "The Inspection" Stars, Jeremy Pope & Raúl Castillo Nov 16, 2022
    Show notes

"The Inspection" had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and later screened at the New York Film Festival (NYFF) as the Closing Night Film. Elegance Bratton's feature directorial debut pulls from his own life experiences to tell a powerful, inspiring story of a Black gay man who joined the Marines when he had nowhere else to turn to in life for love, support, or purpose. Stars Jeremy Pope and Raúl Castillo were kind enough to spend a few minutes talking with Dan Bayer and I about their characters in the film, working with Elegance, going to "boot camp," how important the story is for today's society, and more. Enjoy, and please check out the film in limited release from A24 on November 18th and then going wide on December 2nd. Thank you!

Interview With "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" Composer, Ludwig Göransson Nov 14, 2022
    Show notes

Ludwig Göransson is one of the world's most accomplished composers and music producers. He's worked on blockbuster films such as "Venom," and "Tenet" and has been director Ryan Coogler's go-to film composer throughout his career, working on the scores for "Fruitvale Station," "Creed" and "Black Panther," the latter for which he won the Oscar for Best Original Score. The much-anticipated sequel, "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," finds Göransson returning to the world of Wakanda while having to introduce the underwater kingdom of Telokan. Please take a listen to our conversation as we discuss the pressure of having to follow up the original film, working with talented music artists such as Rihanna on the film's soundtrack, how he expanded upon his work from the first film, and more. Enjoy, and thank you!

"Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" Nov 12, 2022
    Show notes

For this week's main podcast review, I am joined by Sara Clements, Josh Parham & Tom O'Brien. Together we're reviewing the newest film in the MCU, "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" starring Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Winston Duke, Dominique Thorne, Florence Kasumba, Michaela Coel, Tenoch Huerta, Martin Freeman & Angela Bassett. In our review below, we discuss all of these points, plus the film's Oscar potential, with a spoiler section for those worried about any major plot points being revealed. Thank you for listening, and enjoy!

Interviews With "Armageddon Time" Director/Writer James Gray & Stars Jeremy Strong & Banks Repeta Nov 08, 2022
    Show notes

James Gray's "Armageddon Time" had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year and later screened at the Telluride and New York Film Festivals before releasing in theaters last week from Focus Features. The film tells the personal childhood story of a young James Grey (played by Banks Repeta as Paul Graff) growing up in 1980s Queens, New York, during a time of social and political change that was sweeping the country. Jeremy Strong, who plays Paul's father Irving, was on hand with Gray to discuss their work on the film alongside another interview I conducted with Banks Repeta, who went into detail about what it was like working with Strong, Anne Hathaway, and the legendary Anthony Hopkins and more. Please take a listen to my interviews with all of them and enjoy! Thank you!
