Show notes

Much has been written about "Decision To Leave's" direction by Park Chan-wook, but a lot of what makes his work stand out is the collaboration with cinematographer Kim Ji-yong. "Babylon" Dec 24, 2022

Show notes

For this week's main podcast review, I am joined by Eve O'Dea, Dan Bayer, and guest Nathaniel Rogers from The Film Experience. This week we're reviewing the latest film from Damien Chazelle, "Babylon," starring Margot Robbie, Diego Calva, Brad Pitt, Jean Smart, Jovan Adepo, Li Jun Li & Tobey Maguire. A mammoth three-hour-long film about Hollywood's transition from silent films to talkies, the movie is a wild, entertaining, and confounding deconstruction of a time of excess and debauchery, which has triggered a lot of mixed responses. What did we think of it, though? Please tune in for our SPOILER-FILLED review as we discuss the themes, characters, performances, crafts, and the film's Oscar prospects in our review below. Thank you so much for listening over this holiday weekend, and enjoy!

Interviews With "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery" Star Janelle Monáe & Director/Writer Rian Johnson Dec 23, 2022

Show notes

Like the 2019 original film that came before it, the latest Benoit Blanc murder mystery from director/writer Rian Johnson, "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery," had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it tore the roof off the building, providing audiences with another clever, entertaining and bitingly relevant whodunnit. The film had a one-week limited run in theaters over Thanksgiving and is now available to stream on Netflix. Johnson was kind enough to spend some time talking with Will Mavity about his latest film, while I had the pleasure of speaking with the film's star, Janelle Monáe. Both have been nominated for Critics Choice Awards for their work, and the film is up for your consideration for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actress. Please take a listen, and we hope you enjoy watching the film and obsessing over its many twists and turns with your friends and family over the holidays! Thank you.

Interview With "Matilda The Musical" Director, Matthew Warchus Dec 22, 2022

Show notes

"Matilda The Musical" had its world premiere at the London Film Festival and is now coming to Netflix on December 25th. Based on the 2011 stage musical of the same name, which is based on the 1988 novel by Roald Dahl (which was turned into the popular 1996 film by Danny DeVito), the film has drawn a positive response for its musical numbers, performances from breakout star Alisha Weir, Emma Thompson and Lashana Lynch and adaptation from the screen to the stage. Director Matthew Warchus was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about his work on the film, which you can listen to below. Please enjoy, and thank you!

"Bardo, False Chronicle Of A Handful Of Truths" Dec 21, 2022

Show notes

For this week's second podcast review, I am joined by Ema Sasic, Eve O'Dea, Josh Parham, Tom O'Brien and guest Ryan McQuade to talk about the latest film from Academy Award-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, "Bardo, False Chronicle Of A Handful Of Truths," starring Daniel Giménez Cacho, Griselda Siciliani, Ximena Lamadrid, Iker Sanchez Solano, Andrés Almeida & Francisco Rubio. Described as a state of mind, the nearly three-hour arthouse film originally premiered at the Venice International Film Festival to negative reviews and has since been received more favorably after it got re-edited and is now streaming on Netflix. What did we think of the dream-like imagery, the messages Iñárritu wanted to convey, the performances, and the gorgeous cinematography from Darius Khondji? We discuss all of this and the film's Oscar prospects in our review below. Thank you for listening, and enjoy!
