Interview With "Oppenheimer" Composer Ludwig Göransson Jul 20, 2023

Show notes

"Oppenheimer" finally releases in various formats, including IMAX 70mm, at select locations this weekend. The latest film from Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Christopher Nolan marks the second time he's collaborated with Academy Award-winning composer Ludwig Göransson ("Black Panther") following their work on "Tenet." With a three-hour running time and faced with mixing the epic with the intimate to tell a story from J. Robert Oppenheimer's point of view, the score is a grand, immersive, sonic experience that may stand as the composer's best work yet. Göransson was kind enough to spend some time talking with me about his work on the film, which has generated a ton of awards season buzz. Please take a listen below and be sure to check out the film in theaters this weekend. Thank you, and enjoy!

"Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One" Jul 15, 2023

Show notes

For this week's main podcast review, I am joined by Sara Clements, Brendan Hodges, Danilo Castro & Isaiah Washington. Today, we're discussing the latest film in the "Mission: Impossible" franchise, Christopher McQuarrie's "Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One" starring Tom Cruise, Hayley Atwell, Esai Morales, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham & Henry Czerny. With an all-star cast led by one of the industry's last bonafide movie stars, tons of death-defying practical stunts, and gorgeous locations worldwide, the "Mission: Impossible" franchise continues to grow and build with its most ambitious film to date. How does it compare to its predecessors in the franchise? What did we think of the story, action set pieces, comedy, and pacing? Please tune in for our SPOILER-FILLED review as we discuss these points and more. We hope you'll enjoy our podcast, should you choose to listen to it. Thank you!

"The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" Jul 14, 2023

Show notes

THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture

Our 2011 retrospective continues this summer with David Fincher's American remake of "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" starring Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, Christopher Plummer, Stellan Skarsgård, Steven Berkoff, Robin Wright, Yorick van Wageningen & Joely Richardson. Based on the based selling crime novel by Stieg Larsson, the book had already been made into a popular Swedish foreign language film in 2009. The film's dark tone, violent subject matter, and changes from the source material continue to be a point of contention. Join Lauren LaMagna, Nadia Dalimonte, Lauren Cohen, Josh Parham, Dan Bayer, and me as we discuss these topics, the film's performances, score, direction, awards season run, and more! Thank you for all your support, and enjoy! Also, be sure to check out our other 2011 retrospective reviews for "War Horse," "The Help," "The Iron Lady," "Midnight In Paris," "The Tree Of Life," "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close," "Moneyball," & "The Descendants."

Interview With "Biosphere" Director/Co-Writer Mel Eslyn Jul 10, 2023

Show notes

"Biosphere" had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, and the less you know about this two-hander science fiction story starring Mark Duplass and Sterling K. Brown, the better. However, you should know that it received positive reviews and is quite unlike anything you've ever seen. First-time Director Mel Eslyn (who also co-wrote the screenplay with Duplass) was kind enough to discuss her feature directorial debut with us. Please take a moment to listen to the interview below and check out the film, which is now playing in theaters from IFC Films. Thank you, and enjoy!
