Ep. 55 - Do You Feel Sleepy and Thirsty while Nursing? A look at hormones... Apr 30, 2021
    Show notes

In this episode, a listener question sends M&H down the research rabbit hole to understand why breastfeeding makes you feel so thirsty and so sleepy. Turns out, it’s all in the hormones. But you’ll be shocked to hear that it’s not only about oxytocin! Enter, prolactin; you’ll be amazed!
They also discuss the practicalities of drinking when you're thirsty and making sure you breastfeed in a soft and safe space because you may fall asleep. Of course, M&H close things out with an "Award in the Alcove."
But before that, they thank a Patron and share the incredible community and support $20/month Patrons enjoy: a private consultation with M&H and monthly live group sessions for Q&A, sharing, learning. Wow!

Ep. 54 - NICU Speech Language Pathology & Occupational Therapy- The safeguards of your breastfeeding journey, with guests Katie Fluharty, SLP, CLC and Megan Martino, OT, CLC. Apr 23, 2021
    Show notes

M&H start everything off with a listener question addressing a conflicting (and frustrating) tongue tie diagnosis for a now 4-year-old who's having speech troubles.
Did you know that there are providers that work with premature infants in the NICU to teach them to feed before they even attempt a feed? These speech language pathologists (SLP) and occupational therapists (OT) are essential in preventing oral aversions and developing good eating habits in NICU babies.
These amazing women also discuss their role in supporting parents and caregivers, and how they emphasize developing strong bonds between baby and caregiver with experiences like skin-to-skin and non-nutritive sucking. It’s a sweet and caring episode.
M&H close things out with an "Award in the Alcove," because we love you and we think you are doing great!

Of course, this episode covers the most up-to-date research on breastfeeding with PCOS and highlights the research that needs to be done in the future.

Ep. 52 - Milk Banks: interview with guest Denise O’Connor, founder/executive director of the Midatlantic Mother’s Milk bank Apr 09, 2021
    Show notes

Have you ever donated breastmilk? Would you ever consider it?
Maureen and Heather talk to the founder and executive director of the Mid-Atlantic Mothers' Milk Bank , Denise O'Connor, about all the incredible work they do. What donor milk is, who can donate, who can receive donor milk, the process of getting donor milk and how it’s handled and processed, the upsides of using donor milk, the milk bank and its relationships with parents who’ve experienced infant death, and so much more!
Denise is so passionate and her organization does such an incredible job of supplying human milk to those who need it most.
This episode begins with a testimonial of a Milk Minute Podcast listener who had to use donor milk for her son. Then, Maureen and Heather answer a listener question about using donor milk (that mom has in the freezer) because she’s going on antibiotics instead of direct breastfeeding. Finally, the infamous AWARD IN THE ALCOVE! Could it be you? It could be!
