    The Karen Kenney Show

Karen Kenney is a certified Spiritual Mentor, Writer, Podcaster and Coach. She’s known for her dynamic storytelling, her sense of humor, her Boston accent and her no-bullshit approach to spirituality, self development, and transformational work.

She’s been a yoga teacher for 25 years, is a Certified Gateless Writing Instructor, and is also an author, speaker, retreat leader and the host of The Karen Kenney Show podcast.

A curious human being, life-long learner and an entrepreneur for 20+ years, KK brings a down-to-earth perspective to the spiritual principles and practical tools that create powerful shifts in people’s lives, relationships and businesses.

She works with people individually in her 1:1 program THE QUEST – and in her group program THE NEST.

Her approach brings together tools that coach both the conscious and unconscious mind. She combines Brain Science, Subconscious Reprogramming, Integrative Hypnosis, and Spiritual Mentorship to help clients regulate their nervous systems, remove blocks, rewrite stories, rewire beliefs, and reimagine what’s possible!

Karen wants her clients to have their own lived experience with spirituality and to not just “take her word for it”. She encourages them to discover and deepen their own personal connection to Self, Source and Spirit in tangible and actionable ways.

Her “Your Story To Your Glory” process helps people to shift their minds from an old thought system of fear to one of Love – using compassion, empirical evidence and humor, her work is effective, efficient, and wicked fun!

KK’s been a student of A Course in Miracles for 30 years, has been vegan for 20+ years, and believes that a little kindness can make a big difference.

Stay Off The Grass Jun 17, 2021
    Show notes

When we share something that we’ve created (or are in the act of still creating), whether it be a book, a poem, a project or a program, etc., where we share this inspired idea, can make all the difference in whether or not it succeeds.

Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we’re talking about using a little bit of caution when it comes to who we share our dreams, work, artistry and hopes with. When our seedling of an idea is new, it needs nurturing, support and positivity to plant roots and start to shoot. It doesn’t need a particular careless person or a crowd of people trampling it down into the dirt.

Sometimes, you’ve got to put up a “Stay Off The Grass” sign to the people in your life that don’t get, understand or want to champion your vision. This individual curriculum and Divine assignment came to you - it’s yours to care for - so you need to be wicked picky about the friends, family or chosen few who you know will tread lightly and nourish your seedling to grow.

    • Seedlings We Want To Plant (2:24)

    • Get Off The Grass (7:03)

    • We All Need Cheerleaders (12:21)

    • They Believed In Me (18:29)

    • Who Are My Balcony People? (21:19)

    Say It - Don’t Delay It Jun 10, 2021
    Show notes

Throughout our life (if we’re lucky) there will be so many different situations and scenarios when the people who care about us will be there for us.

Sometimes in providing opportunities for our growth, offering their advice or support, loving us through painful moments and offering a helping hand when we really need it.

Whatever those moments look like for each of us, we shouldn’t wait to let those “human angels” know how much we appreciate them.

Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we’re talking about missed opportunities that can happen because we choose to put off until tomorrow what we could be doing today.

Things like saying, “Thank you”, “I’m so proud of you”, “I forgive you” or “I love you” or by giving a hug, making a phone call, sending a card or showing your gratitude. If we’re not practicing mindfulness and being aware, if we’re not paying close attention, then some moments that we can’t ever get back, just might pass us by.

As I often tell my mentoring clients & community members, “We never know when the last exhale is coming”, so please say it - don't delay it.

The Scene Of The Crime Jun 03, 2021
    Show notes

Sometimes as human beings that are doing personal & Spiritual work, we often try to go back in time to “the scene of the crime” of our childhood trauma or our old wounds in hopes of finding healing.

We fantasize about “time travelling” to that particular person or prior place to finally try to get the love that we needed.

We think that our problem can be solved somewhere “back there”, when really healing actually happens best, right here in the present moment.

Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we’re talking about heading back to the scene of the crime and how it can sometimes leave us incapacitated or keep us from moving forward.

As they say in some 12-Step and recovery programs, “You can’t build a better past” - meaning we can’t go back and change what we did or what happened to us.

We want it to have been different but, as the brilliant somatic and trauma therapist Linda Thai says, we often resist the fact that “that ship has sailed”.

Instead, hopefully we can find ways to navigate our past, assign new meaning to it, and gather tools to help us integrate the experience, find safety in our relationships now and move forward in our lives.

The salve, the balm, and our healing medicine is found in the Love in the here and now.

    KK's Key Takeaways

    Trying To Heal (5:22)

    External Teacher (14:03)

How Do We Do That? (18:31)

Slowing Down The A-Hole Reflex May 27, 2021
    Show notes

Today on The Karen Kenney Show,I'm sharing a funny story about how having a spiritual practice can help you to slow down the ego's tendency to react like an asshole. Ha!

Difficult situations, people and things are going to come our way but we can choose to meet them with love (and sometimes, a sense of humor).

The actions of others and the happenings of the world around us are often out of our control and yet how we decide to respond to these things, will set the tone for what happens next.

This doesn’t mean that we should become a doormat or put up with unacceptable behavior. Nor does it mean that hard things won’t come our way or that life will always be wicked easy. Because we know that’s just not how things work here. Ha!

However, if we take the time to create a DSP (Daily Spiritual Practice), dial into our Spiritual Team and make a consistent effort to slow down our minds and our mouths - we have a much better chance to represent ourselves in the way that best reflects the love that we truly are.

This isn’t always easy to do, but with some daily dedication, determination, discipline and devotion - we can actually learn to slow down the “A-hole Reflex”!

    KK's Key Takeaways

    • Grace For Others (7:05)

    • Don’t Take It Personally (16:08)

    • Create Some Quiet Time (18:15)

    • Choose How We Want To Respond (23:33)

Leaving The Table May 20, 2021
    Show notes

When it comes to our relationships with people, places, projects, programs, etc - if whatever is being “served at the table” stops feeling nourishing or being respectful and healthy, then we need to be able to push our chair away and get up to leave.

Oftentimes, when we first meet people they start out by dishing out a bunch of goodness. So much so that it makes us want to sit down and take a seat at their table.

But somewhere along the way, things can start to change and what we’re on the receiving end of now is no longer good for the body, mind or soul.

Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we’re talking about the importance of being able to walk away when it’s time or if it becomes necessary.

This doesn’t mean we can’t be grateful for the time we had while sitting at someone else’s table, but it’s best to not overstay our welcome, or to put up with things that we know aren’t right.

We all deserve to have a seat at the table where love is being served and when it stops feeling like love, like the great Nina Simone says, “You've got to learn to leave the table, when love's no longer being served.”

    KK's Key Takeaways

    • Loyal Listener (1:42)

    • Learn To Leave (7:21)

    • Sometimes We Feel Guilty (12:23)

    • Always Paying Attention (15:51)

    • If I Leave This Table (21:02)

Our Bodies Hold Our Stories with Linda Thai May 13, 2021
    Show notes

“The survival strategies that keep us alive, are also what keep us from living.”

And that’s just one of the many golden nuggets that my guest Linda Thai, shared during our powerful and intimate conversation. I kept asking her to repeat herself because all the wisdom she was speaking was too good to be missed!

Today on The Karen Kenney Show, I’m thrilled to introduce you to the amazing Linda Thai. I was lucky to study with Linda recently, and I was so moved by her personal story and inspired by her professional work, that I just knew I had to have her on the podcast!

Linda is a somatic therapist, mental health clinician, storyteller, community builder and educator. She assists internationally renowned psychiatrist and trauma expert, Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, with his private small group psychotherapy workshops aimed at healing attachment trauma.

Linda also uses her background in trauma therapy, somatic therapies and yoga to guide others through the steps that help them to recognize and safely release tension through resourcing the body.

We talk about how the body (and the nervous system) holds implicit or subconscious memories that we may not be aware of. And that by working with and through the body, we can access a deeper truth, that isn't possible when we go through cognitive (intellectual) awareness.

She also shares that there's a narrative that we tell ourselves and that we told ourselves, and that we hang on to. And yet, if we pause for long enough and sink into the body, there's something else that's wanting to emerge.

With this knowledge, we can begin to move from a state of trauma - to one of empowered self-awareness that allows us to connect back into ourselves and each other.

No longer do we have to abandon ourselves; we can instead get curious and listen to the stories our bodies are trying to tell us, so that we can play a proactive part in our own healing and come home to ourselves.

    KK's Key Takeaways

    Having Traumatized Parents (3:39)

    Forgiveness Is An Outcome (12:06)

    The Space To Rage (18:28)

    Perpetually Pessimistic (26:37)

    Thinking Of Myself Less (1:17:55)

    Water Ourselves (1:28:18)

    Look Out The Window (1:37:13)

Between The Healer And The Wounded (1:42:43)

    Hold My Own Story (1:48:25)

Linda Thai is a somatic therapist, trauma therapist, mental health clinician, storyteller, and educator who has had her own lived experiences of individual, collective, historical and cultural traumatization...and healing. She uses her background in trauma therapy, somatic therapies and yoga to guide others through steps that help you to recognize and safely release tension through resourcing the body. She believes in empowering others through education and skills, thereby igniting potential and fueling your innate desire to learn, to grow, to heal.

Linda is an adjunct faculty member in the Social Work Department at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and specializes in trauma-informed care and compassion fatigue resilience skills; Mental health clinician at ND Systems, specializing in somatic therapies and trauma therapy. She assists internationally renowned psychiatrist and trauma expert, Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, with his private small group psychotherapy workshops aimed at healing attachment trauma. In her work at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, she is responsible for training clinicians in all departments, including psychology, nursing and medicine. She has a Master of Social Work with an emphasis on the neurobiology of attachment and trauma.

    Idiot Compassion May 06, 2021
    Show notes

There have been times in my life where I have found myself being overly empathetic and compassionate to a fault. Times where I put up with or made excuses for someone else’s crappy behavior because I didn’t want to upset them or hurt their feelings.

Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we’re talking about what is known in the Buddhist tradition as “Idiot Compassion”. Ha!

Which is a wicked funny way to also describe what is sometimes called “enabling”. Idiot Compassion is the misconception that we’re somehow being loving by avoiding rocking the boat.

Of course it’s good to be compassionate with others and to learn more of their story, so we can understand why they do what they do. However, it’s not actually kind or loving if we keep allowing them to continue hurting themselves, or others around them just because of their past.

Being kind and compassionate is not about being a doormat. Sometimes the most loving thing we can say to someone else is, “No!”.

Show Up & Show Out Apr 29, 2021
    Show notes

Are you just showing up in your life or are you taking that extra step to show out?

Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we’re talking about a powerful experience I had this month with my new friend and author of “Ambassador of Hope”, Andre Norman - who not only preaches action in “showing up & showing out”, but also exemplifies it with his own life.

Recently, he joined me and surprised the members of “The Nest” (my Spiritual Membership & Community) when he showed up physically in the same room as me on a call! (It was so fun!)

His presence and dedication to go the extra mile, left an impactful mark of inspiration on all of us. If we can learn anything from this whole experience with Andre, from the beginning of how our paths crossed, up until where we are now - of having him sitting next to me in my own house, is that if we want something, we need to ask for it.

Then when we receive it, we need to not only show up, we need to SHOW OUT!!

I’d love to hear how you are showing up & showing out in your own life.

Extracting Your Inner Genius with Terri Trespicio Apr 22, 2021
    Show notes

Is it possible to go from an introverted child who wanted nothing to do with adults and the outside world to speaking on stages, working at Martha Stewart, hosting a radio show, and having a TEDx talk that has surpassed 6 million views?

Sounds like a huge leap, but that’s exactly what my amazing guest has done! She’ll tell you that even today she’s still somewhat of an introvert (and scared as hell to do things) but that doesn’t hold her back from speaking up and using her voice, both on the page and in her business as an award-winning writer, speaker, and brand advisor.

Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we’re talking to my friend and fellow Gateless Writing Instructor, Terri Trespicio!

In our conversation, we lay it all on the table - from our childhood experiences, to life as a writer, to stepping out of the boxes that society loves to put us in, especially as women.

We also dive into what I call Terri’s remarkable ability to extract a person’s inner genius, how to “unmute yourself” in conversations with others, and why the question, “What do you do?” sends so many of us into a tizzy. Ha!

If you want to join the conversation on this topic and get some free tips on how to make it easier, to think about, talk about and share what you do, sign up here:

    What's Your Bandwidth? Apr 15, 2021
    Show notes

All of us have a sort of physical, mental & emotional “bandwidth” that includes both an upload (aka: consuming) and a download (aka: creating) speed.

Unfortunately, many of us in today’s world of easy online access find ourselves running from connection to connection consuming everything that pops up on our path, leaving no room in our cup for what we are called to do.

Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we’re talking about being mindful of our current bandwidth capacity. This isn’t an either or situation, where we always head in one direction only - but rather about being aware of how full we are in any given moment and pulling back and recalibrating if necessary, so we don’t end up overwhelmed.

As humans, we need both creativity and personal connection in our lives in order to live in balance. There are going to be chunks of time where we’re more in our creative mode and other times we will find ourselves consuming other people’s content or material.

The key is to find a healthy, personal balance that works for you. Sometimes, it’s okay to put our “curiosity” on hold and go inwards to take some time for ourselves.

What is your upload speed and your download speed? Are you creating more than you're consuming? Are you being fire-hosed by everything out there, and it's leaving you unable to find the energy to work on the things that light you up?

    What's your bandwidth right now?

    KK's Key Takeaways

    • My Download Capacity Is Maxed (2:44)

    • Be Mindful (11:51)

    • This Is My Assignment (21:09)

    • Keep Your Eyes On Your Own Paper (23:50)
