    The Investigation

It’s one of the rarest political events in American history, one that only three presidents have ever experienced before today. Just months after the release of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report, the White House finds itself under fire from a new front: an impeachment inquiry. Who was on that July 25th call between President Trump and President Zelensky? What was promised and who was pressured? And how has that one phone call raised the question, once again, of possible foreign intervention in U.S. elections and “quid pro quo” demands to other foreign leaders? We’ll bring you all of our exclusive reporting — from the halls of Capitol Hill to Maiden Square in Kyiv. Along the way, you’ll get insight from legal analysts and historians, politicians and principals — those who are driving the developments in this rapidly-unfolding story — all as we count down the days until an impeachment vote and a possible senate trial.

Former Trump Campaign staffer Michael Caputo says he hasn't spoken to President Trump since Inauguration Day due to the pending investigations on Capitol Hill and the Special Counsel. But after the Mueller Report was released, Caputo's phone rang and it was the President. He tells "The Investigation" about their Oval Office meeting, the President's feelings about impeachment, and what most concerns him most about his best friend Roger Stone's upcoming trial. "The Investigation" co-anchors Kyra Phillips and Chris Vlasto also sit down with former Congressional investigator and later Congresswoman Barbara Comstock, who gives insight into all the nuts and bolts of a Congressional Investigation, including the pending issue over access to President Trump's tax returns: "We never went after tax returns because that was Nixonian."

    Show notes

In the aftermath of the release of the Mueller Report, "The Investigation" sits down with Congressman Eric Swalwell, member of the House Judiciary and Intelligence Committees, and now a 2020 Presidential contender. Swalwell tells "The Investigation" that he hasn't written off impeachment proceedings and says the first step is to call on Special Counsel Robert Mueller to testify before Congress. "Let's hear his voice." Swalwell also mulls the possibility of a Presidential appearance before a Congressional committee: "I don't think we should take that off the table." Senior National Correspondent Terry Moran also joins for analysis and discussion.

"Color-Coded Redactions" - What Won't We See in the Mueller Report Apr 16, 2019
    Show notes

675 days, 2800 subpoenas and 500 witness interviews later, the Mueller Report - with color-coded redactions - is expected to be made public this week. Now, the ABC News Investigative team is taking you inside the "War Room" where the team will read and report back all the details once the report is released. In this episode of "The Investigation," co-host Chris Vlasto along with John Santucci and Matt Mosk break down everything you need to know about the upcoming release of the Mueller Report with Chief White House Correspondent Jon Karl and legal analyst Dan Abrams. Karl points to one man for answers:"[Don] McGahn is a central player here, the one that is potentially the most dangerous," while Abrams breaks down the elephant in the room legal question: what constitutes obstruction of justice? Abrams concludes though, when it comes to what is in the highly anticipated Special Counsel's report: "There's going to be material which suggests that he obstructed the investigation, and if it had been anybody else, it probably would have been criminal."

    Show notes

In this special episode, "The Investigation" takes listeners inside the Ecuadorian Embassy and the tiny room that Julian Assange called home for the past seven years. Senior Executive Producer Chris Vlasto along with investigative reporters Matt Mosk and James Meek speak with documentary filmmaker Sean Langan, who has spent over 50 hours visiting with Assange in what he called "a gilded cage...with very old fashioned, 1950’s, Spanish Mexican furniture." Langan tells "The Investigation" about his last meeting with Assange just 20 days ago: "he looked me in the eye and I could sense…he had this real fear now…of spending the rest of his life in a Supermax federal prison in America," and what Assange really thinks about Roger Stone and Donald Trump,Jr.: "he said, 'those bunch of clowns…couldn't conspire and organize this kind of thing.'"

    Show notes

In this episode of The Investigation, the team analyzes the congressional call for President Trump's tax returns. Robert Driscoll, attorney for former White House personnel security director Carl Kline, joins to discuss a whistleblower's allegations that some security clearance applications granted were not in the best interest of national security, the House Oversight Committee's investigation into the review process, and why he believes the motivation behind their probe is actually digging up "opposition research" on the first family. Additionally, ABC's Chief Justice Correspondent Pierre Thomas weighs in to forecast the pending release of the redacted Mueller report.
