    The Investigation

It’s one of the rarest political events in American history, one that only three presidents have ever experienced before today. Just months after the release of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report, the White House finds itself under fire from a new front: an impeachment inquiry. Who was on that July 25th call between President Trump and President Zelensky? What was promised and who was pressured? And how has that one phone call raised the question, once again, of possible foreign intervention in U.S. elections and “quid pro quo” demands to other foreign leaders? We’ll bring you all of our exclusive reporting — from the halls of Capitol Hill to Maiden Square in Kyiv. Along the way, you’ll get insight from legal analysts and historians, politicians and principals — those who are driving the developments in this rapidly-unfolding story — all as we count down the days until an impeachment vote and a possible senate trial.

Bonus: "A Guy Who Just Didn't Want To Play Politics" Jul 24, 2019
    Show notes

"The Investigation" brings you a bonus episode on the day of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's testimony on Capitol Hill. After a 22 month investigation, a 448 page report, and countless Presidential tweets-Robert Mueller himself was sworn in to testify before the House Judiciary and Intelligence committees. Now, our co-hosts Chris Vlasto, John Santucci and Matt Mosk are joined by ABC News Justice Correspondent Pierre Thomas and Senior National Correspondent Terry Moran to break down all the critical moments for both sides of the aisle, from Congressman Ted Lieu's question about the Office of Legal Counsel opinion that had Democrats temporarily rejoicing, to Mueller's passionate defense of his investigation: "It is not a witch hunt." Thomas, who has covered Mueller for decades, brings historical context to today's testimony: "he'll be remembered as a guy who didn’t want to play politics, he did not want to engage in a circus."

"Equivalent To A War Vote" Jul 23, 2019
    Show notes

With less than 24 hours to go before Robert Mueller's anticipated testimony on Capitol Hill, "The Investigation" sits down with one of the members of the House Judiciary who will ask the special counsel questions - Congressman David Cicilline: "I think it's deadly serious and I think that's how the hearing will proceed." As for his thoughts on Mueller's final report, the Rhode Island Congressman sums it up: "The evidence he collected is explosive and damning and very, very disturbing." And when it comes to impeachment proceedings, Cicilline tells "The Investigation" it is a "serious undertaking... in my mind equivalent to a war vote."

"Our Constitutional Duty is Clear" Jul 16, 2019
    Show notes

In this episode of The Investigation, presidential candidate and US Rep. Seth Moulton (D-MA) talks about why he's ratcheting up calls for Trump's impeachment, even though it continues to be a contentious topic with his colleagues in the House and fellow 2020 contenders. "We spend too much time in this party debating the politics of impeachment, when the law is very clear and our constitutional duty is clear," Moulton says, explaining why he thinks that skimming over the topic in the lead up to the general election would be "a mistake," and why he believes that Robert Mueller's pending appearance on Capitol Hill could be a game changer. Later, the ABC team forecasts what to expect from Mueller's testimony and analyzes the political roadblocks facing congressional democrats who want to launch impeachment proceedings against Trump.

"They're Just Looking For The Gotcha Moment" Jul 09, 2019
    Show notes

On this episode of "The Investigation," President Trump's personal attorney Jay Sekulow talks with senior editorial producer John Santucci and White House and Capitol Hill reporter Katherine Faulders about congressional investigations: "we're not ramping up an impeachment." Sekulow also discusses the ongoing legal battles for the President's tax returns: "This legislative purpose issue overrides everything they do. That's a constitutional requirement for the Supreme Court." When asked by "The Investigation" about Robert Mueller's upcoming testimony on the Hill: "They're just looking for the gotcha moment. I don't see it."

"Democracies Don't Work When People Are So Tribal" Jul 02, 2019
    Show notes

ABC News political analyst Matt Dowd joins Senior Executive Producer Chris Vlasto to discuss Mueller’s upcoming congressional appearance: "It will get people focused." Dowd, former chief strategist for President Bush, also gives insight into Vice President Biden's chances in the democratic primary: "When you get a hundred percent name I.D. and you're getting 30 percent of the vote, that's concerning." Later, the conversation turns to partisanship in the 2020 race: "Democracies don't work when people are so tribal."
