    The Investigation

It’s one of the rarest political events in American history, one that only three presidents have ever experienced before today. Just months after the release of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report, the White House finds itself under fire from a new front: an impeachment inquiry. Who was on that July 25th call between President Trump and President Zelensky? What was promised and who was pressured? And how has that one phone call raised the question, once again, of possible foreign intervention in U.S. elections and “quid pro quo” demands to other foreign leaders? We’ll bring you all of our exclusive reporting — from the halls of Capitol Hill to Maiden Square in Kyiv. Along the way, you’ll get insight from legal analysts and historians, politicians and principals — those who are driving the developments in this rapidly-unfolding story — all as we count down the days until an impeachment vote and a possible senate trial.

"By Hook or By Crook" Jun 11, 2019
    Show notes

As the House Judiciary Committee kicks off a series of hearings on the findings laid out in Robert Mueller's Russia report, former Trump aide Roger Stone joins "The Investigation," telling co-hosts Kyra Phillips and Chris Vlasto: "I don't see there being any fervor in the country for impeachment." Stone, who faces a seven count indictment from the Mueller probe and previously testified in front of the Watergate Committee, shares his opinion of former Nixon White House counsel John Dean's testimony on Capitol Hill: "I kind of think he's click-bait." Stone, a veteran GOP strategist, even offers his advice to President Trump as the 2020 race gears up: "He should keep it positive and run on his record." Later, Senior National Correspondent Terry Moran joins the conversation and reveals the one person he says needs to make an appearance before the Judiciary Committee, "by hook or by crook."

"He's The Most Powerful Family Member of a President Since Bobby Kennedy" Jun 04, 2019
    Show notes

While President Trump is overseas, a new and exclusive interview granted by his senior adviser and son in law Jared Kushner is making political waves back at home. Axios' national political reporter Jonathan Swan sat down with Kushner, the two discussing the fallout from that 2016 Trump Tower meeting: "We're in a place now where people are playing Monday morning quarterback," questions surrounding the Kushner Companies' business dealings" "At this point I have been fully vetted," and whether or not Kushner discussed his own White House security clearance with his father in law: "I have not discussed it." When asked by "The Investigation" if Swan thinks Kushner faces any vulnerability with the president: "He's not invulnerable and there have been times…where the president has been irritated with [Kushner], mostly when...he attracts negative news coverage," said Swan, "but I mean, he’s family."

Bonus: "The Report Is My Testimony" May 29, 2019
    Show notes

After submitting a 448 page report that summarized the findings from a 674 days long investigation, Special Counsel Robert Mueller finally breaks his silence, reading a prepared statement from the press room in the Justice building. After announcing his resignation to private life, Mueller stated the Special Counsel did not "make a determination as to whether the President did commit a crime," explaining the reasoning behind that decision was due to the "long-standing department policy: a president cannot be charged with a federal crime while he is in office." Added the veteran prosecutor, "charging the president with a crime was therefore not an option we could consider." He added that he and his team of investigators were "guided by principles of fairness" and that "any testimony from this office would not go beyond our report…the report is my testimony." Now, the members of "The Investigation" led by Chris Vlasto break down the Mueller press conference with former Governor of New Jersey and former U.S. Attorney now ABC News contributor Chris Christie. "I think what [Mueller] was doing was being what Bob Mueller is: which is a boy scout," the former Governor tells "The Investigation." As for whether Democrats will pursue impeachment proceedings, Christie says "I would say game on. Bring it on if you want to do it, that's your constitutional right to do."

In this episode of "The Investigation," as Democrats in Congress continue their battle with the Trump White House, former Special Counsel to President Clinton, Jane Sherburne joins the podcast, telling Senior Executive Producer and Co-Host Chris Vlasto that when it comes to how the Trump White House is responding to Congress" "Just saying no...was not something in our lexicon." Using her own experience managing the team that responded to an ethics investigation during President Clinton's first term, Sherburne tells "The Investigation" we could be living through a constitutional crisis if the Trump White House is "really serious about stiffing Congress." Sherburne shares her thoughts on impeachment proceedings -- "there's plenty" -- and the big mistake she thinks House Democrats are making. Senior Congressional Correspondent Mary Bruce also updates on all the latest happenings on Capitol Hill.

In an "Investigation" podcast exclusive, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders sits down with ABC News correspondent Kyra Phillips, Senior Executive Producer Chris Vlasto, and Senior Producer John Santucci. This wide ranging interview touches upon the aftermath of the Mueller report and the next steps for the Trump administration- including the decision to bar former White House counsel Don McGahn from complying with a congressional subpoena by turning over requested documents: "This isn’t just about Donald Trump - this is about protecting every president after this." While Sanders says that an appearance by Robert Mueller on Capitol Hill is still a "determination to be made at this point," she calls the idea that the President is trying to silence him "absolutely absurd," saying "the bottom line here is Democrats wanted something to be true that wasn't." Sanders also talks to "The Investigation" about her future as press secretary, and why -- even amid scrutiny -- she still feels "comfortable" with her credibility.
