S4 Ep. 34: Pelvic Floor Therapy & Why Every Woman Can Benefit Jul 21, 2024
    Show notes

We are bringing to you on The Hormone Genius Podcast an occupational therapist who is an expert in Pelvic Floor Therapy. Lisa Whisenant believes that anyone can benefit from pelvic floor therapy. That Pelvic floor therapy is NOT about kegels and only internal work, and there is a big difference between what is “common” versus what is “normal” when it comes to women’s health. She has her own personal journey that has made her passionate about helping women restore health, find answers to pelvic pain, and healing from conditions like endometriosis. "I have endometriosis and adenomyosis, which has fueled my need to advocate for women with chronic pain conditions. I’m also a mother and see how neglected this population is when it comes to healthcare in our country. Too many of my patients have been dismissed by other providers, so my goal is for them to feel heard, supported, and educated at each one of our visits." Lisa Whisenant received her Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, with a Minor in Psychology from Texas A&M University and continued her education to achieve a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy from the University of Texas Medical Branch. She is passionate about treating people with chronic pelvic pain disorders. She has completed post-professional training in pelvic floor therapy, focusing on pregnancy, postpartum, and chronic pelvic pain. She holds a certificate in Maternal Mental Health from Postpartum Support International. Her background practicing in multiple Occupational Therapy environments provides an innovative approach to therapy, extensive knowledge of self-care methods, and proficiency in trauma-informed care. Lisa is currently 1 of 3 Certified KickPink Practitioners in Texas and the only in the DFW area, trained to help prevent and alleviate side effects of breast cancer treatment. She is currently treating survivors with stage 0-1 lymphedema. Lisa found her passion for pelvic health after the birth of her daughter and her own diagnosis with endometriosis. She understands the experience of having chronic pain and works to be an advocate for all her patients, providing a holistic approach to healing. Lisa is a proud Texan, married to her best friend, Justin, & together they have a beautiful daughter, Lyla. S4 Ep. 24: Fibroids and Uterine Polyps & Options To Manage Them Jul 10, 2024
    Show notes

Fibroids affect over 26 million women in the U.S. and by the time a woman is 50, over 70% of white females, and 84% of black females will have one! More than half of these 26 million women will experience associated symptoms with having fibroids in the uterus, causing disruption in quality of life and healthcare costs as well. Today Jamie & Teresa will look into what fibroids are, and how would you know that you have one? What things do you need to consider in the management of fibroid tumors? The good news is, first of all, they are always benign and not cancerous, but they do sometimes take medical and surgical management and a woman may need to decide which options are best for her. Polyps are an overgrowth of endometrial stroma cells that grow within the uterine cavity. They affect about 10% of all women and can happen throughout the reproductive life of a woman, but their peak incidence is from 40 to 50 years of age. They are mostly benign, but in rare cases can be precancerous growths. They are often identified due to the abnormal bleeding they cause for women. About 29% of the time polyps can spontaneously regress, but many times have to be removed through a simple surgical procedure called a polypectomy. We cannot fully go through all the options for surgical management because we are not doctors on the hormone genius podcast, but Jamie will ask nurse practitioner Teresa Kenney to help us go through the basics of this women's health issue and have a good overview of what to expect in having this condition One question that Teresa did not know the answer to during the recording of this podcast, but then found out later, is whether she has a fibroid. Interestingly, Teresa looked at a recent ultrasound and found out that she does! It is small and it doesn't have any impact on her health, but it was something that she was unaware of until she took a deep dive into the issue of fibroids on the Hormone Genius Podcast. We hope you continue to enjoy the content on this podcast. Please, like & share our podcast with your friends & family. Please follow us on social media too! Lastly, reviews are amazing and we would love for you to leave us one on the podcast platform of your listening pleasure! Thanks for all your love and support. S4 Ep. 32: Hormone Therapy from Perimenopause to Menopause Jun 26, 2024
    Show notes

Do you feel like you are in the dark when it comes to understanding perimenopause to menopause? Like many areas of the woman's body and her health, there has been a lack of education and support to women. This is true of women going through the transition to stopping their menstrual cycles for good. The good news is more noise is being made about this topic, and we want to join the conversion on The Hormone Genius podcast today and dive into the questions you have about perimenopause and menopause. Jamie and Teresa will discuss this particular transition towards ovarian quiescence; including the common symptoms of perimenopause to menopause, and the options for treatment. Jamie & Teresa will review some of the questions you sent in for us to answer on this particular episode, including themes around weight gain and menopause mood symptoms, hormone therapy, and so much more! One of the most common concerns is whether women should take hormone replacement therapy. This has been a controversial issue for sure, but we will give you a renewed sense of hope in this area of women's health. The great news is that hormones can continue to help womens bodies through menopause and beyond. Hormones have benefits to our quality of life as women, but they also have health and longevity benefits as well. We will take a look at all of these options and also help you focus on becoming the best version of yourself at 45, at 55, 65 and beyond, because that is what we all want is to be healthy and vital for as long as we can on this great earth. We will look also at the Women's Health Initiative and the unfortunate reality that this large study was misintepreted, and therefore has not given women appropriate informed consent around the decision of using hormone replacement therapy. Hopefully, we will give you a new look at this issue giving you more information, so you feel more confident in talking to your doctor/healthcare professional. S4 Ep. 31: After Miscarriage: Healing Your Body, Understanding Your Hormones & Preparing for Pregnancy Jun 13, 2024
    Show notes

Miscarriage can be heartbreaking, and too often, women are left wondering what happened and what they can do next. In this episode of The Hormone Genius Podcast, Teresa and Jamie welcome Becca Yan, FEMM educator, Fiat hormone coach, and host of For the Love of Hormones, to discuss supporting women after miscarriage and preparing for a healthy pregnancy. Becca shares from both personal experience and her work with women and couples nationwide, offering practical insights into fertility awareness, hormone health, and the healing process after pregnancy loss. We explore the role progesterone plays in reproductive health, why the luteal phase matters, and how charting your menstrual cycle can reveal important information about ovulation and hormonal patterns. Cervical mucus, luteal phase length, premenstrual spotting, and other cycle observations can help identify patterns worth investigating with a qualified healthcare professional. We also discuss why it is important to look upstream. Rather than focusing on progesterone alone, women may benefit from evaluating ovulatory health, hormone levels, and potential underlying contributors to miscarriage. Becca shares simple lifestyle considerations for supporting reproductive health, including adequate protein, healthy fats, balanced nutrition, and attention to both egg and sperm health. Most importantly, we talk about giving yourself permission to grieve, honoring the baby you have lost, and finding compassionate support. Miscarriage is not something women should have to navigate alone, and women should never automatically blame themselves for a pregnancy loss. Working with a knowledgeable healthcare professional can help identify possible contributing factors and determine appropriate next steps. Our conversation is a reminder that information alone is not transformation. Start with one meaningful step, whether that is seeking support, learning to chart your cycle, or finding a healthcare professional who will help you investigate the root causes of your reproductive health concerns. Connect with Becca: Listen to For the Love of Hormones and learn more about her fertility education and coaching at Becca’s website. S4 Ep. 30: Naprotechnology: A Root Cause Approach to Women's Health Jun 06, 2024
    Show notes

If you have been tired of the "band-aid" approach to healthcare, particularly in women's health, then you will want to hear about Naprotechnology. Otherwise, referred to as Natural Procreative Technology, Napro is considered a more root cause approach to women's health care. It is designed to cooperate with the natural cycle and restore the underlying problem back to health. Naprotechnology was developed in the early 1990's by Dr. Thomas Hilgers an OB/GYN who also developed the Creighton Model System of Natural Family Planning. This charting system is the foundation of Napro and it is used by doctors, NP's and other health care professionals as a diagnostic tool to understand diagnoses like; infertility, endometriosis, PCOS, PMS, abnormal bleeding and so much more. It has been very successful for many women, especially in the area of infertility with statistics showing that it is more successful then artificial reproductive technologies to achieve pregnancy. We hope this episode of The Hormone Genius will empower you to have another tool in your toolbox, another option for taking care of your female body. One that respects the natural design of your hormones and the superpowers that we have as women. Inflammation—it’s a word we hear everywhere in health and wellness conversations. But what does it actually mean for your body, your hormones, and your long-term well-being? In today’s episode of The Hormone Genius Podcast, Jamie takes the lead in exploring the dual nature of inflammation—how it can be both a life-saving response and a silent saboteur of health. S4 Ep. 26: Postpartum Depression & Mineral Toxicity: A Story of Healing Apr 24, 2024
    Show notes

Today we will hear a story of perinatal depression from our guest Amanda Dailey. This story is difficult to hear and may be triggering for some who have had depression during pregnancy and also post partum. Amanda is sharing her story to "shine a light in the darkness." The good news is that is is full of hope and healing as well! So be ready to go on a journey with Amanda as she shares her difficult experiences related to her last pregnancy and severe mental health issues. Did you know that about 11% of women will have perinatal depression (depression or other mental health issues during pregnancy). This is important to know and for women to understand that they are not alone when suffering with depression during pregnancy. Risk factors for depression or other mental health issues in pregnancy include: A history of depressive, bipolar, or anxiety disorders A family history of depressive disorders or perinatal disorders An unplanned or teenage pregnancy A multiple birth A difficult or traumatic pregnancy or birth An ongoing health problem with the baby A lack of social support with low socioeconomic status and financial difficulties (https://www.ccjm.org/content/87/5/273) Untreated depression during the postpartum period also has repercussions for both the mother and her baby. For the mother, it can lead to intense sadness, marked anxiety, and a lack of interest in life and the child, often resulting in poor or absent maternal bonding with the infant. It is also associated with failure to initiate breastfeeding or a shortened duration of breastfeeding. Amanda will also give us beautiful information about a new project and organization that her family is starting The Philomena Project to give help to other mothers in this situation. In her own words" through my faith, support of family & friends, nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals, and therapy have helped me to heal. It is not a quick fix. A Christian artist Tasha Layton once shared what someone told her: “Depression is just the body's way of saying something needs to change.” Depression was just one of the symptoms to my underlying nutrient deficiencies in my body. It took over a year and half to discover this, but listening to my gut - the answers are in my body - proved to save my life and lead me to a truth path of healing." Here are some helpful resources that Amanda has put together for mom's who may be interested in this topic and getting more help: - Netflix documentary called Untold: Breaking Point, detailing tennis player Marty Fish's battle with mental health, https://www.netflix.com/title/81026434 - Artist NF (Nathan Feuerstein), has some great songs specifically about OCD - A playlist on Spotify I have created over my 2+ year healing journey: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2EZjNM6EBMMPyOOLcTAInI?si=e5ca97f2dc134ae9 - Dr. Walsh's book, Nutrient Power - Mensah Medical, https://www.mensahmedical.com - Walsh Research Institute, https://www.walshinstitute.org - Podcast, Eat for Life, https://eatfor.life" We thank our sponsor for today Dr. Monica Minjuer of Radiant Health!
