S4 Ep. 13: Hungry for More: Emotional Eating, Hormones & Finding Freedom with Food Dec 13, 2023
    Show notes

Why do we sometimes reach for food when we aren’t physically hungry? Why can changing our habits feel so difficult, even when we know what’s good for us? And what if a healthier relationship with food starts with something deeper than willpower? On this episode of The Hormone Genius Podcast, Teresa Kenney and Jamie Rathjen explore the fascinating connection between physical hunger, emotional hunger, hormones, body image, and the habits that shape our lives. As we approach a new year, conversations about diets, weight loss, and resolutions can leave women feeling overwhelmed, discouraged, or ashamed. But our relationship with food is about more than calories and cravings. Together, Teresa and Jamie unpack the roles of ghrelin and leptin in hunger and fullness, the emotional triggers that can lead us to seek comfort in food, and the deeper needs that sometimes hide beneath our cravings. They discuss how stress, fatigue, social comparison, negative self-talk, and past experiences can influence eating patterns, and why lasting change may require more than simply trying harder. Sometimes, the path forward means understanding the root of our habits, seeking support, rebuilding trust in ourselves, and rediscovering the importance of meaningful human connection. Plus, six practical ways to begin building a healthier relationship with food: Pause and ask whether you’re physically hungry or seeking emotional comfort. Pay attention to your menstrual cycle and recognize that hunger can naturally change throughout the month. Move away from restrictive dieting and toward nourishing your body. Stay hydrated and consider whether stress or fatigue is influencing your cravings. Prioritize protein and fiber to help support nourishment and satiety. Start small, practice positive self-talk, and rebuild trust in yourself through achievable habits. The goal isn’t to live in a constant battle with food or to eliminate every pleasure. It’s to develop greater self-awareness, freedom, and peace in the choices we make. Join us for this thoughtful conversation about becoming more intentional with our habits, caring for our bodies, and recognizing that true happiness is found in more than a quick fix.
