When can DR be diagnosed? And the government's obesity drive is missing the point May 23, 2021

    Peter waffles, very passionately, his way through another episode talking about;
When can diastasis recti be diagnosed? Some are suggesting DR can't properly be diagnosed until a year post-partum. Peter explains why it is a mistake to say so and leads to bigger problems down the line. He gets VERY passionate about this one.
Why the government's new "obesity drive" is missing the point. After a long discussion with somebody about the new obesity drive by Boris Johnson, Peter explains why he believes there is almost no benefit to a pre-watershed advertising ban and he thinks that government policy should stop being catered towards the lowest common denominator.
In the news this week; This study about the effects of alcohol on brainhealth. I know it's not a fun subject but it's quite an important one and I reckon more people should know about this.

Sacrifice; What are you willing to give up? May 16, 2021

After last week's internet problems, we have a triumphant return (If I do say so myself)
Peter talks about setting goals and what the single most important question is that most people forget to ask; What are you willing to give up? Has your PT/ coach/boss told you what you need to do to achieve your goals?
He also touches on a "I am qualified so I am an expert" discussion he had with somebody this week. Just because somebody has studied something that doesn't mean they're any good at their job. We all know that one useless person in the office, why would you think Drs/personal trainers/ dieticians etc. are any different? And what can you do to make sure you don't end up working with the wrong person?
In the news this week; Another book about health by a doctor, an A&E doctor this time.Peter talks about the problems with books and articles by people such as this. Nothing against the Dr, I'm sure he's amazing, but the book is a waste of money.

Peter answers some questions he recieved this week.
"Where to start when you want to start exercising again after a long time if you have no diastasis but are just a little bit unfit?"
How long should you spend in the gym?
What sort of exercises should you do?
Should you lift light or heavy?
    How intense should it be?
And how long should you do cardio for?
Here's a little link to a download of that 7th heaven session Peter spoke about. No email address, no signup required.

    12 kinds of hunger? Apr 25, 2021

Peter waffles about the dietary-theory of 12 kinds of hunger. Is this legit or is this just a whole bunch of psychobabble to make weightloss sound more complicated than it really is?
He's also talking about "exercise for weightloss". Gyms are opening up again in Scotland and a LOT of women have been emailing in asking what the best exercise for weightloss is.
He explains why exercising for weightloss is a collosal waste of time.

Can exercise make diastasis worse? Apr 18, 2021
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

Yet another podcast where a large chunk of it is taken up by Peter talking about Diastasis Recti.
There seems to be a BIG misconception about whether exercise can make your diastasis recti worse or not.
Some studies are now claiming that "No, certain exercises (sit-ups/crunches etc) can not make DR worse." whereas the commonly held "belief" said that they can.
    Peter talks about exactly what the problem is here;
The DEFINITION of diastasis recti is not broad enough.
As Peter explains; ALL exercise can make diastasis worse. And, at the same time, NO exercises can actually make diastasis worse.
It all depends on how you perform the exercises and what you actually class as diastasis recti.
The definition of diastasis recti, as used by a lot of post-natal personal trainers and physios, does not go far enough and is not broad enough. If you do not include muscle functionality in your definition you're missing a massive, and very important, chunk of what diastasis recti actually is. And this is what causes some people to not see any results when they try a post-partum program.
This, once again, is the difference between working with a geniune expert and "someone who also does post-natal stuff".
In the news this week; Peter touches on the tragedy with Peloton treadmills. In case you were not aware, these things are NOT safe to be used around small children or animals. In fact, Peter thinks Peloton is irresponsible for not issuing a warning to all their users and giving all their customers the option of a refund or a fix.

"Above Navel "Diastasis Recti and BMI as a measurement for health Apr 11, 2021
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

Peter had an extra coffee this afternoon and it really shows.
He waffles, at a million words per minute, about "above navel diastasis recti". Basically this is where you do not have a gap below the belly button but you do above it.
    This in response to a couple of emails about it this week where members with above navel DR had some questions;
Why do we/should we still work the lower part of the core when the gap is mainly above the bellybutton?
Should we treat above navel DR differently from below navel or open DR?
Can above navel be healed in the same way that open DR can?
    etc.
Peter talks about all this and explains why a "well-thought-out" post-natal program will help with this whereas "diastasis safe" workouts are likely to make it worse rather than better and why a poorly thought-out post-natal program won't help it at all.
In the news this week; This article on the BBC. Essentially it's about a report from the Women and Equalities Committee. In it they urge the scrapping of BMI as a measurement which Peter believes is a mistake. The problem with BMI, as he sees it, is not with BMI as a measurement but with the people applying it as a strict measurement of health. Peter argues that BMI is a pretty decent indicator of expected health BUT that it just shouldn't be the sole one. So the problem is with the doctors/medical professionals applying it rather than the measurement itsself. He also argues that this incorrect application of BMI, and fake pictures on the internet, is responsible for a psychological problem with the measurement rather than the actual BMI tool.

The difference between success and failure and lifting heavy things with DR Apr 04, 2021
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

Tonight Peter waffles about consistency and perseverance. He was talking to someone this week who had tried 2 post-partum exercise programs in the past year and neither had given her any results with her diastasis recti. A lot of the diastasis recti support forums are full of women with the same experience.
And the problem for these ladies is almost inevitably the same. So Peter talks about that and has the solution, explaining why Consistency and Perseverance are the two most important things when it comes to any sort of rehab exercise.
He also talks about weightlifting with Diastasis Recti. Can you/should you lift heavy things? How heavy can you safely go? How can you make sure you're lifting safely? When can you start lifting things?
In the news this week; Just loads of crappy studies, and depressing news articles about subjects we spoke about before so we're leaving that for this week :)

Tonight Peter responds to a question he had about "Intuitive Eating".
One of his clients has been trying this "diet" for a while, after buying the book about it, but can't seem to get it right and is even gaining weight.
Peter explains the problem with Intuitive Eating for weightloss and what you can do to do it successfully, without spending money on the book!
He also talks about the bullshit artists in the wellness world after an experience he had with a prospective guest this week. So how can you weed out the nonsense-peddlers?
In the news this week; This article about cheat days and why personal trainers, such as Scott Laidler, who say you can have a cheat day once a week are wrong.

Different kinds of post-natal back-pain and how to fix them. Mar 21, 2021

Tonight Peter apologises for last weeks "weak....very weak" episode. After that discusses he different kinds of post-partum backpain. What causes them and how to fix them.
Backpain from being pregnant and backpain from doing "mum" things are not the same and they require a different focus when trying to resolve them.
In the news this week; This study, once again, linking gut-health to overall heath and healthy aging. Why you should really start to take some sort of probiotic and make sure you have a varied diet.

It's the 100th episode of the Healthy Post Natal Body podcast and boy is Peter waffling through this episode!
Tonight Peter discusses the importance of hydration, and what to drink, and diet for post-natal recovery..including diastasis recti. Why a PERSONALISED approach is key to good post-natal health.
In the news this week; Language matters. There is only one story in the news in the UK this week and that is the tragic murder of Sarah Everard. On the back of this a lot has been made about the language we use every day and it's something Peter has spoken about in the past, but on a different subject.
So we're back on the "language matters" subject today, because it really does.
