    The Happy Gynecologist

Every Obstetrician/Gynecologist out there knows about stress.

The stressors we face every day are unique to our field of medicine. As OB/GYN physicians, with the long hours, the middle of the night deliveries, and the potential for bad outcomes, we are especially prone to burnout.

That is exactly why I, Amanda Miles MD, created this podcast. As a certified life coach, burnout expert, and practicing generalist, I know what it takes to help you find your Happy again.

    EP#16: The Manual Jan 28, 2021
    Show notes

The manual is a list of unspoken rules you have for other people. Like a Girl Scout manual that says what a good girls scout is, we also have a manual for what a good spouse is, what a good sister is, what a good friend is. It is a list of things we think other people should do, so that we can be happy. But often, this leads to tension and resentment in relationships or feeling frustrated with people/patients/coworkers. Come listen to find out more details on what a manual is and if you currently have one for the relationships in your life. Then leave me a review so I can spread the word to more OB/GYN's (or healthcare workers in general) about this podcast! The goal is to help as many others that I can with this work!

    EP#15: Guilt or Shame? Jan 21, 2021
    Show notes

Did you know that there is a difference between guilt and shame? And that if you experience more shame, there are higher rates of associated depression, anxiety and burnout? Mom Guilt is like "I feel bad for giving my kid M&M's with breakfast," whereas Mom Shame is like "I'm a bad mom for giving my kid M&M's with breakfast." We also tend to shame ourselves as doctors when we have complications. The difference between these is vital to how we view ourselves as a Mom, as a Doc, and as a person. Come and listen to today's episode and discover if you are shaming or guilting yourself regularly and what to do about it. Listen on iTunes, Spotify, and Google podcasts! EP#14: People Pleasing Jan 14, 2021
    Show notes

I'm a recovering people pleaser. There, I said it. Maybe you relate. People pleasing comes from our deepest primal fear of rejection, because if we were kicked out of the herd, we would be in danger. So no wonder it sucks to feel rejection. Come listen and we will discuss the ways that people pleasing often shows up, and how to show up in a more authentic way (to yourself and others).

EP#13: Where does overwhelm come from? Jan 07, 2021

EP#12: The Secret to Toxic People Dec 31, 2020
    Show notes

Toxic People can really get us in a negative mood if we let them. Come along and listen today to find out my Secret to dealing with them. I'll also share the concept of Emotional Childhood and Emotional Adulthood, which is a something I teach my coaching clients to help them take charge of their emotions 100% of the time.

EP#11: How to Reduce Your Burnout in 8 Hours Dec 24, 2020
    Show notes

As an OB/GYN, we expect to lose sleep to deliveries and call and getting paged. However, many times, we aren't taking advantage of time off to actually catch up and get the right amount of sleep that we require! We often want to stay up late to take advantage of our time off, but this leaves us feeling chronically tired. With studies showing sleep deprivation leads to build up of beta-amyloid, and possibly increased risk of Alzheimer's, it is more important than ever that we prioritize getting sleep when we are able to. Come listen to find out the best sleep recommendations and ways to start improving your sleep, and your burnout, tonight.

    EP#10: Achievement Dec 17, 2020
    Show notes

Medicine is full of achievers. Most of us identify as one. But what this sometimes looks like is postponing our happiness until we achieve the next great thing. It sometimes looks like striving for more and more to find our happiness. But often when we achieve the next great thing, the happiness is short lived or absent. This is known as Arrival Fallacy, and many of us fall into this in medicine. We postpone our happiness until we are done with med school, then residency, then boards. What I teach you today, is a system that I teach my clients to start finding that sense of achievement every day, without having to bust your ass to do more, earn more or achieve more. Because the things you are doing are enough, right now, in this moment. You are enough. The system I teach you trains your brain to generate the feeling of accomplishment and pride every day. AND it can help you blow your own mind with results. So tune in and let me share the love!

I'd also love it if you would leave me an iTunes review so we can get the word out to more OBGYN's that this podcast exists and is here to help!

EP#7: Burnout and Your Brain Nov 18, 2020
    Show notes

Our primitive brain can be an asshole sometimes.
This is the part of our brain that keeps us safe and alive. It is constantly scanning the horizon for danger.
You know, lions and tigers and bears and stuff.
It doesn't know we live in a world of Whole Foods and WiFi now....so it can get a little confused.
It's also the part of our brain that gives us the urge to do things.... Like punch someone in the face when they make a rude comment.
Luckily, as humans, we have evolved to have a prefrontal cortex to make our rational decisions...and to tell our primitive brain that punching someone in the face isn't typically a great idea.
When our primitive brains offer us the solution of punching someone in the face, we choose not to listen to it.
So when it offers that everything is awful and we are not ok, we don't have to listen either.
With the chronic daily stress we have as OB/GYN's plus a pandemic, our primitive brain may be in overdrive telling us that we should run back to the cave to escape the lion.
This often shows up as anxiety and fear of the unknown and BURNOUT.
Of course our primitive brains are worried. Of course they are. We've never been through a pandemic.
But it doesn't mean we aren't ok. Right now, in the moment, nothing has gone wrong for most of us.
Sometimes it helps to remind our primitive brain that we aren't being chased by a lion.
Some of my favorite thoughts to practice when my primitive brain is in overdrive:
"Of course you're worried brain, but it's OK. We are safe."
"Things ARE hard right now brain, but we will figure it out. "
"Thanks, no thanks brain. I've got this."
    "Everything is figure-out-able."
Borrow one of mine or find your own. But tell your primitive brain to chill out. You've got this.
    ❤️/Coach Miles
