78: I Am a Mom and an Entrepreneur With Jennifer Sanger Dec 01, 2020
    Show notes

You’re a mama. What a beautiful gift in this life!

    But you’re also an entrepreneur.

Society has conditioned us to believe that you have to be one or the other – that you must lose yourself in the mothering process, only to one day wake up and start the journey of re-finding WHO you are and WHAT you want.

Well today, my guest Jennifer Sanger and I are here to remind you that you are a mom AND an entrepreneur – not one or the other. We’re going to bust some common myths, talk about real-life struggles, and help you create a path that is more peaceful and enjoyable.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • Why the concept ‘work-life’ balance is an unrealistic expectation.
    • How to let go of the nitty-gritty things in order to protect your energy.
    • The importance of ‘just doing it’ and perfecting as you go.
    • The trauma of racism and what we need to know about interracial partnerships.
    • Why investing in yourself is so important as a business owner.
    • The importance of putting yourself out there even if imposter syndrome is getting in your way.
    • The difference between apologizing and saying ‘I’m sorry’.
    • Advice on maintaining your mental health when juggling being a mom AND entrepreneur.

Jennifer is a mother of two, entrepreneur, wife, and fellow wine drinker. She quit her corporate job just before the COVID-19 shutdown to pursue her online boutique for infants and toddlers, Jamison & Bexley.

She also hosts an IGTV series called ‘Real Life Struggles with Jennifer Sanger’ where she talks about real-life struggles mothers deal with on a daily basis and helps mothers navigate life, one struggle at a time, by speaking her unfiltered truth.

Powerback 77: Establish your Employer Brand Nov 12, 2020
    Show notes

I think business is a lot like life in many facets.

You get into business and you start doing things – then people start having these expectations of how you and your business should move along this imaginary line:

    • When are you hiring?
    • When are you going to get a location?
    • When are you expanding?
    • When are you making a fancier website?

I’m here to say, “Fuck the line. Everyone’s line is different.’

We have so much access to what other brands are doing that it can be very easy to dilute what it is that we want.

This week I would like you to take your Powerback™ by reclaiming your own space in business and really establishing what you want as a brand:

    • How do you want to run things?
    • Do you want more time off?
    • How do you want things to look and feel?
    • What is your company culture?
    • What services offerings are depleting your time and energy.
    • Can you let go of tasks that no longer serve you and ask for help?

My friends let me remind you that you started a business to be more in control of your life. And I know firsthand how easy it can be to slide off that path.

So, this is your opportunity to take you Powerback™. This is your opportunity to reclaim your time, money, and energy. Because just in case you forgot: You are the boss. You get to make the decisions. You get to pivot when necessary.

    A Gutsy Exclusive: Sean Hunter (#pelotonhusband) Nov 05, 2020
    Show notes

So many times, we want to show up in our lives and in our businesses but we fear what other people might think and say about us.

This causes you to stay small and gives you perceived safety, but ultimately it's pulling you further and further away from your calling.

In this Gutsy Podcast Exclusive, we're talking to Sean Hunter, also known as #pelotonhusband, about the effects of negative feedback and how to overcome them.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • How Sean dances the line between being a gym teacher, an actor, and studying for his Master’s degree.
    • Why it’s important to listen to that voice telling you, ‘You need to do this’.
    • Advice to aspiring actors, musicians, artists that want to pursue something but feel it’s insanely out of reach.
    • How the pandemic has shone clarity on many facets of life.
    • The importance of being in a ‘reflective state’ as well as ‘reframing the mind’ through language.
    • The 2019 Peloton Christmas commercial and the perspective Sean hopes to shift concerning the commercial’s controversy.
    • The effects of negative feedback and how to overcome them.
    • The importance of infusing curiosity into your life.
    • What GUTSY means to Sean.

Sean is a teacher by trade and actor by hobby. He's a K-7 gym teacher and the former #pelotonhusband living in Vancouver. He enjoys acting, teaching, lots of backdoor activities, and staying social with friends.

Sean played the role of the husband in the 2019 holiday commercial for Peloton, an at-home indoor cycling brand. The commercial received millions of views (I’m talking over 5 million views) and at the time raged the world.

Powerback 76: Create Your Business Launch Checklist Oct 29, 2020
    Show notes

Are you thinking of starting a business or launching a product but have no idea where to begin or the first step to make?

Or maybe you're just completely overwhelmed with all the different options but you know that there is a business idea inside of you that needs to come out.

What I’ve learned during my entrepreneurial journey is that oftentimes it’s not the lack of ideas or excitement that is holding you back. It is the lack of support and the navigational tools to get there.

That’s why I created the Brand Starter Course — a hand-holding guide to the beginning stages of launching a business.

This week I would like you to take your Powerback™ by firstly going and checking out the Brand Starter Course at LauraAura.com, and secondly by creating your Business Launch Checklist:

    • Understand the why and purpose behind starting your business.
    • Build your Business Power Team (if you don’t know what that is I encourage you to go back and listen to EP75).
    • Understand your ideal client and what challenges they are facing.
    • Produce a product or service that solves the challenges that your ideal client is facing.
    • Decide how you are going to show up.

Now look, this is a pretty generalized checklist that will help you stay hyper-focused. But I go into WAY more depth into all these different steps in the Brand Starter Course.

So if you are getting ready to start a business and need some direction, the Brand Starter Course is going to be your trusty sidekick, I promise.

76: Launching a Business During COVID with Lynn Power Oct 27, 2020
    Show notes

Did you just start a business or were thinking about starting one when a freaking global pandemic hit?

As if launching a business isn't hard enough already. Am I right?

Business as we know it - hell LIFE as we know it - has been forever changed. But just because things feel different does NOT mean that your dreams and visions should go by the wayside.

Today we're going to talk to Lynn Power from Masami about launching a business during COVID - some of the learning curves that came along with it, and how you can build a thriving business in spite of it.

    In this episode you’ll learn:

    • Why it’s important to NOT try and be an expert in everything but to rather hone in on what you like and know.
    • Where to begin when launching a new business and some suggestions around the implementation of it. (hint: it starts with the letter ‘b’)
    • Some early hurdles that small businesses tend to face when launching.
    • Why delegation is so important and some telltale signs that you need to start delegating.
    • How to evaluate whether you need to start building an internal team or an external team.
    • Some helpful (and unhelpful) tools that startups can use to grow their business.
    • Advice around building an online presence.
    • How to stay motivated whilst growing a business during a pandemic.

Lynn is a 30-year advertising executive (most recently the CEO of J. Walter Thompson, New York) turned entrepreneur. In February, she launched Masami, a clean premium hair care brand (and if you think back to that timeframe, it was a pretty pivotal time for all of us!)

Lynn loves building high-performance teams, disrupting the status quo, and helping women find their voices.

Powerback 75: Build Your Business Power Team Oct 15, 2020
    Show notes

When building a business, it’s really important to have a group of individuals that you can lean on and rely on for professional guidance.

Now, I know you might be thinking that you have your loved ones for this, but let me remind you that your loved ones generally just want the best for you. So, they may not always want to tell you the hard, or necessary truth out of fear of hurting your feelings.

This week I would like you to take your Powerback™ by building your Business Power Team. These are professionals whose #1 interest is giving you the BEST advice for the BEST outcome for you and your business.

    I’m talking about your:

    • Accountant
    • Insurance broker
    • Lawyer
    • Local banker
    • Mentor
    • Spouse, friends, or family (#cheersquad)

Remember, you’re NOT going to build your Business Power Team overnight (unless you want to have rotating interviews for all these people and put them in place today!)

But what you CAN start doing is looking at your current business relationships and asking yourself, “Do I have my Business Power Team assembled? Or is this something I need to take my Powerback™ in and invest my time in building?”

75: How to Start a Business, Legally, With Matt Johnston Oct 13, 2020
    Show notes

You've had a spark of an idea and you're considering turning your passion or a side hustle into a business. Or perhaps you already have. The idea and the excitement is the easy part.

The hard part? “Where in the HELL do I begin to actually form a business?”

This is probably the #1 question I get from new entrepreneurs. So today we're going to talk about the first steps you should take to launch your business as a legal entity.

I am no guru at this, but I know the best of the best. To help me guide you through this process today I have Matt Johnston (#Mattthelawyer).

    In this episode you’ll learn:

    • When you should consider transitioning your hobby into a business
    • Important factors you need to consider when entering into a business partnership
    • A step-by-step process of how to launch your business as a legal entity
    • Who should be part of your management team as a small business owner
    • The difference between copywriting and trademarking and how to go about setting these up
    • The two biggest mistakes small business owners make

Matt Johnston (#Mattthelawyer) is a small business attorney and the founder of the Johnston Business Law Group in Frederick, MD. He's been in private practice since 2007, solo practice since 2012, and has run a virtual law practice long before it became all the rage in 2020. He provides easily accessible, actionable, and practical legal and business advice to small business owners and entrepreneurs.

Matt's passion for small business led him to exclusively represent small business owners in matters related to formation, operations, employment law, trademarks, and copyright law. He is deeply opinionated on the matters of contract law, and his experiences developed a viewpoint that ‘contracts are documents about relationships first and the law second’.

When not geeking out about contracts, Matt can be found geeking out about soccer, science fiction, and a little bit of heavy metal music.

Powerback 74: Choose one area to make a bold move Oct 01, 2020
    Show notes

This week I would like you to take your Powerback™ by choosing one area of your life or your business to make a bold move:

    • Try something new
    • Try out a new wardrobe
    • Try out a new hairstyle (maybe even shave your whole damn head!)
    • Move to another part of the world
    • Stop a service in your business that no longer serves you
    • Pivot your business plan
    • Raise your business prices (and keep them raised!)
    • Change the voice of your content
    • Shift the way you are showing up in your brand

But before making any bold move I encourage you to pause for a moment and ask yourself, “What is my intent right now?”

    • Is this something you feel completely aligned with?
    • Is this going to add to the better good?
    • Is this serving a higher purpose?

Remember, these bold moves do NOT need to be permanent nor do they need to be loud like fireworks on July 4th. They can also be quiet and sweet.

The most important thing is that you are in alignment with your bold decision and you are NOT afraid of what other people will say, think, or do - if it’s going to better your life and the people in your life then girl, do it!
