Episode 131 Karen G a 64 year old mother and grandmother shares her inspiring intermittent fasting journey. Jul 10, 2022
    Show notes

I’m 64 years old, married for 44 years, mom of 2 adult daughters and Grammy to 2 amazing granddaughters, ages 7 and 4. Retired last year after 44 years as an RN in critical care and ER. I live on Lake Champlain in the Adirondack Mountains of New York State. I enjoy spending time with friends and family (especially my grandluvs!), walking, reading, boating/kayaking/swimming in the summer and snowshoeing/relaxing by the fireplace in the winter. Hoping that retirement will allow more time for traveling and exploring new places. I have vacillated between normal weight and 20-40 lbs overweight most of my adult life since the birth of my second daughter. Having two small children, 14 months apart, working full time opposite shifts of my husband, returning to school for my BSN = STRESS! Many diets tried, usually with success of varying lengths of time. Generally the same pattern…lose the weight to goal/near goal followed by gradual abandonment of an unsustainable commitment to maintain resulting in weight creep back to or above starting weight. Daily walking (3-5 miles) and light weight workouts 3x/week do not compensate for overeating. Discovered IF July 2020…it clicked/resonated…”What is this magic?!” Diminished hunger, mood stability, heightened mental clarity and focus, soaring energy, improved health, pounds and inches melting off, clothing sizes dropping. Started with 16:8 and quickly progressed to 18:6 and 20:4. Soon added meal-less Monday and ultimately 4:3 ADF. Achieved goal weight of 125 by end of 2020; maintaining goal range (115-120) for almost 1 ½ years ~ mostly 5:2 ADF. I weigh daily and track weekly average to keep me accountable, adjusting my fasting schedule as needed. Graeme Curries phrase “Vigilance without Obsession” is my maintenance mantra. Family support has been critical to my success. My husband, daughters and sonin-law all do some form of IF; collectively we have lost about 270 lbs. In addition, the IF podcasts, books and FB groups provide immeasurable support and guidance.

Episode 129 Harold Rose-A school teacher who has lost an amazing 100 pounds (48Kg) in six months of living an intermittent fasting lifestyle. Jun 26, 2022
    Show notes

Harold Rose, 46, lives in Gulfport, Mississippi, in the United States with his wife of 22 years, Stella and their two children ages 20 and 18. Gulfport is about an hour east of New Orleans, home of Mardi Gras in the United States. He is a public school teacher with over 20 years of experience. He has helped coach girls' volleyball at his school since 2018. Harold began intermittent fasting in December 2021, and as of June 2022, he is down over 100 lbs or 45 kilos. He started at 315 pounds and is now under 215. Harold used a form of ADF mixed with OMAD along with weight training and walking.

Harold struggled with being overweight for much of his life. After growing up on the “husky” side of life, Harold seemed to be constantly “dieting” or “watching: what he ate. As he neared high school graduation, Harold was 6’4” and almost 300 pounds. He began a crash diet and exercise program to attempt to join the military. Harold needed to drop down below 240 to enlist. With low calories and exercise, the weight was lost, but he failed the eye exam.

From that point in 1994, Harold went on to college. Slowly but surely, the weight came back. Through college, his early teaching career, after marrying his wife, Stella, and the beginnings of growing their family, Harold’s weight crept up and up. By 2007, following Hurricane Katrina, Harold’s weight was around 350 pounds. Harold doesn’t know his highest weight because he didn’t get on a scale for years.

From 2008 to 2014, Harold worked a second job part-time overnight at the local newspaper. With a lack of consistent sleep and stress, Harold surprisingly lost weight. His wife called it his “push away diet” – he pushed back away from the table when he was full and stopped going back for seconds. More in the episode.

Episode 128 Laurie Lewis a revisit from episode 30. Laurie a well known intermittent fasting coach and author celebrates 5 years of living an IF lifestyle. Jun 19, 2022
    Show notes

Certified coach, Laurie Lewis, has changed the lives of thousands through her coaching of Intermittent Fasting. Utilizing time-tested (and science-tested) principles, Laurie takes on individual clients as well as leading her group programs Live on Zoom. She helps determined, exasperated, busy people (who are tired of dieting!) from the United States to New Zealand to Ghana to Israel to Scotland.

Stubborn hormonal fat hit hard in 2012, causing her to suddenly gain 50 pounds. For years, she tried everything and none of the old tricks worked. She hit rock-bottom and almost resigned to the “fact” that she would keep getting heavier and feeling worse and worse forever. At a particularly despondent time in 2017, a video unexpectedly popped up which would turn the course of her life. She stayed up all night learning about Intermittent Fasting, and started that very next morning.

Laurie has just celebrated her five year anniversary living an intermittent fasting lifestyle .In this episode Laurie recaps her amazing journey and gives some great insights and advice.

Episode 127 Kim Dowell A catalyst moment leads to an amazing day and renewed health with intermittent fasting. Jun 12, 2022
    Show notes

I am a 56-year-old married mother of two adult daughters. I spent the first half of my life at a very appropriate weight, but I never believed I was small enough or in shape enough. I did not appreciate the gift of a healthy body and spent far too much time criticizing how I looked. After my daughters were born, I began struggling a little more with weight and proceeded to do all the things I heard about that might help. I worked out, joined Weight Watchers, used the My Fitness Pal app and tried other strategies to, somewhat successfully, slow the weight gain that seemed inevitable.

As my 50th birthday approached I had big plans to lose weight, but that goal date came without any change in my size. During the pandemic I gained even more. About two years ago I heard the term Intermittent Fasting for the first time. I tried it without understanding the clean fast and failed miserably after two days. My oldest daughter became engaged in May 2021. I was so happy for her, but I immediately began worrying about how I would feel walking down the aisle at the highest weight I had ever been. Three months passed with me paralyzed by indecision and worrying that nothing would work, not to mention a sinking feeling that any weight lost would immediately return post wedding.

At 9 months to the wedding, I began searching the web for help. I remembered the term Intermittent Fasting from my failed attempt over a year ago. I googled the term and found Gin Stephens. After downloading Fast, Feast, Repeat and devouring it immediately, I began IF on August 22, 2022. The Fasting Highway podcast and Facebook page became my best friends because I waited many weeks before I told anyone what I was doing! I was able to release 40 pounds by the week before the wedding! I am so thankful for the way IF has changed, not just my body, but my entire outlook on life. Intermittent Fasting is a gift I give myself every day. I am thankful to have an opportunity to share that gift of health and hope with others.

Episode 126 Jammie Behrendt A cancer survivor who has found great success with intermittent fasting losing 27Kg (60 pounds) over 15 months. Jun 05, 2022
    Show notes

My name is Jammie Behrendt, I am 52 years old, I live in Northern California. I am a proud mother of two boys and I have an amazing supportive husband who tells me that I am beautiful, even at my heaviest. I have had challenges with my weight my whole life.

I have tried every diet plan, Weight Watchers, liquid soup diet, extreme exercise, the Zone diet, and more. I have yo-yoed the same 50 plus pounds on and off over the past 30 years. March of 2021 was when I weighed the heaviest I had ever been. It scared me because I am a breast cancer survivor. I had the most common type of breast cancer, estrogen positive. As a part of my treatment was a medication with lots of side effects, and a weight gain of 91 pounds. I was scared because I was told by my doctor that fat cells produce estrogen. The more fat you have, the more estrogen it produces. So here I was taking this medication to stop the production of estrogen, yet it was causing me to gain weight that would create more estrogen in my body.

I was desperate to lose weight. I decided to give a plant based diet a try. Three months later, I had lost 15 lbs, which was also when I was told I could stop my meds. At the same time I remembered a colleague mentioning intermittent fasting to me. I started to read everything I can get my hands on. I have lived in my own personal hell, in this overweight body, and I just needed to be free of the weight. October 1, 2021, when I stopped my meds, I also started intermittent fasting! I never looked back! 45 lbs down, a total of 60 lbs since March 2021. Some days I feel like ”how the hell am I ever going to get to my healthy weight?” as I have 65 more pounds to go. Then I just listen to The Fasting Highway podcast. The stories have given me the courage to share my story.

Episode 124 Grant Brooker Finding a heathier life living an intermittent fasting lifestyle losing 30 Kg (66 pounds) May 22, 2022
    Show notes

Born the lightest baby but grew up to be the largest in the family. Growing up I was the chubby kid . We grew up with three meals a day with snacks which consisted of biscuits, lollies, and ice cream, the normal confectionary that time. As a child I have had issue with my body due to remarks from others which stuck in my mind as a kid that made me feel more insecure about my built. As a kid it was hard to hear negative comments about personal appearance coming from people. And reality does hurt your feelings

As time went on I would watch the scales go up and down. Travelling to see relatives, I would try to lose some weight but it always come back on when returning from overseas and some more, the plane table would never sit flat it was a mission trying to eat the food off the tray. I can remember one time we flew to Christchurch and boarding the plane I split my long shorts as they were 6xl they caught on a arm of the seat.

Buying clothes would always put me on a low especially seeing my size going from 5 and 6xl, that would always motivate me to start losing again. The things that were holding back my body from losing weight were the snacks. The 4 slices of toasts with cheese and jam toppings lunches being brought from the bakery every work day. The sugar filled smoothies, the vanilla slices, the fried food and the evening meal plus pudding, yes you guessed it ice cream and fruit juice lots of that and fizzy drink. When it came to Friday and Saturday nights takeaways even Sunday’s with that added sugary drinks milkshakes were a favorite. I would finish band practice and drink a large chocolate shake at 9pm so the body was processing that sugar late into the night.

Suffering from severe gout attacks I was put on medication to control it. I would only have to look at a slice of brownie and get a gout attack. I also have high blood pressure once again being controlled by medication which I hopefully can come off one day in the future.

Charlie speaks at various business and social awareness functions, and has been featured in newspaper, magazine, radio, podcasts, and TV. The Dad to world famous Star the Dog.

From his earliest childhood memories, Charlie always wanted to eat and drink more. A fast metabolism and active lifestyle kept the weight off, but by his twenties found himself in the obese category. Charlie lifted weights and did cardio to outrun the compulsive eating, but without success. He tried a 12-step program to get a hold of his food obsession but still found the desire to eat far outweighed the desire to be healthy physically fit. At the age of 55, Charlie used a great deal of his life struggling with food. He found an Intermittent Fasting group on Facebook and immediately joined. He started this new journey and felt better almost immediately. There were stumbles on his first try, but he re-committed and chose to live a healthy lifestyle.

Charlie is now approaching 1,000 consecutive fasts and maintains a minimum daily fast of 20 hours, and will often average 22-23 hours for reflection & clarity. Like anything, the IF lifestyle will work for you if you put the time in. Slow and steady wins.
