    Captain Lorca.

We first meet Captain Gabriel Lorca in "Context Is for Kings," the third episode of Star Trek: Discovery, and quickly learn that his command and leadership style is vastly different from that of any captain we've seen before. He is flippant, abrasive, and obsessed with winning the war against the Klingons. And, as we later learn, he has ulterior motives.

In this episode of The Edge, hosts Amy Nelson and Patrick Devlin are joined by Ken Tripp of Standard Orbit to discuss the intricacies of Lorca's command style and his varied interactions with his crew. We discuss his autocratic approach to leadership and how the crew responds. We also examine the appropriateness of his relationships with Admiral Cornwell and Michael Burnham, and consider how our view of this complex character changed after learning that he is from the Mirror Universe.

    Ash Tyler.

Star Trek is often a reflection of our own society, and Tyler/Voq is a good study of how people with mental disorders are seen. Should they be held liable for crimes committed when they aren't "themselves"? Through Tyler/Voq, the Star Trek: Discovery writers show how someone with two personalities must deal with different sets of memories, intentions, and actions depending on which personality is dominate at the time.

In this episode of The Edge, hosts Amy Nelson and Brandon-Shea Mutala are joined by guests Patrick Devlin of Warp Five and former Earl Grey host Lee Hutchison to discuss Ash Tyler/Voq, who the real person is inside the body, and who is responsible for actions taken. We also consider mental disorders, how they affect people, and how we believe they affected Tyler/Voq.

Star Trek: Discovery Annual 2018. For almost forty years, the adventures of the characters we love to watch have been continued in novels that tell new adventures and expand upon onscreen events. But these have generally been accepted as having no impact on TV episodes or movies. Star Trek: Discovery is a bit different. Fan-favorite novelist Kirsten Beyer was hired not only to write for the show but to maintain continuity wherever possible between the Discovery and tie-in fiction. With this in mind, what can we learn about the crews of the USS Discovery and USS Shenzhou from the novels and comics?

In this episode of The Edge, host Brandon-Shea Mutala is joined by Dan Gunther and Bruce Gibson of Literary Treks and Patrick Devlin of Warp Five to talk about the new Star Trek: Discovery Annual 2018 comic. We talk about characters, timelines, and the relationship between Culber and Stamets. In news, we talk about filming, ships, casting, directors, and more that came out of El Paso Comic Con.

    Season Two Captains.

In Star Trek: Discovery's first season, two captains were portrayed: Gabriel Lorca and Philippa Georgiou. In the finale, the Discovery crew are en route to Vulcan to pick up their new captain when they stops to answer a distress call, leaving fans with many questions. Who will be the new captain? Will it be a familiar face? Human or alien? When will we meet them, and who will portray them?

In this episode of The Edge, hosts Amy Nelson and Brandon-Shea Mutala are joined with Kyle Wagner of The Fandom Podcast Network to discuss "What if?" scenarios. We debate the importance of a captain on a show that claims to be "lower decks" and highlight listener thoughts on a new captain.

Themes. Star Trek: Discovery has brought us new characters, ships, and stories, yet remained authentic to Star Trek's ideals and philosophy. Amazing and universal themes that cross boundaries and cultures are found in its stories, and viewers continue to identify with each character on different levels, adding to the complexity of the show.

In this episode of The Edge, host Amy Nelson is joined with Brandi Jackola of Warp Five and Heather Barker for our third installment on themes. We discuss being caught between two worlds, conservation, fate vs. self-destiny, and the needs of the many vs. the needs of the few-or the one. And all along the way, once again, we recognize these themes in our personal lives.

    Molor.

The first season of Star Trek: Discovery is in the books. Was the finale what you thought it would be? For many, the closing chapter fell flat. For others, it was wonderful. Like the series itself, "Will You Take My Hand?" has divided fandom. Even an appearance by the most famous starship in television history has left viewers with mixed emotions. And that moment, together with the title, is almost a question from the writers to the audience. Now that you've seen what we're doing, as we head into season two, will you take our hand?

In this episode of Notes from The Edge, in which we deep-dive into connections between Star Trek: Discovery and the broader Star Trek universe, host C Bryan Jones shares his thoughts on the finale and why all the emotions swirling around the conclusion to this 15-part story stem from expectations. We also explore Betazed, Ceti eels, darseks, and Kahless's rival, Molor.
