    Calypso.

Although the Star Trek with which were are familiar is set in the future, "Calypso" goes far beyond what we've seen before—a thousand year far. Once merely a starship computer, Zora has spent the past millennium becoming sentient. Meanwhile, Craft was a fighting in a war away from his family and was dangerously injured. They are the only characters we see, who find and save each other in a beautifully told story of companionship and love.

In this episode of The Edge, hosts Amy Nelson and Patrick Devlin discuss the second episode of Star Trek: Short Treks: "Calypso." We question the reality of an AI system and her compassion for Craft. We also deliberate the moral issues surrounding their relationship. When it turns into more, is the emotional love considered cheating? And with no mention of the crew, Starfleet, or the Federation, can this episode really be considered Star Trek or is it just a really good SF short story?

Revisiting The Vulcan Hello and Battle at the Binary Stars.

For some, the first two episodes of Star Trek: Discovery are a prelude to the real story. They introduce the characters, establish the time period, and set up the war with the Klingons, that classic Star Trek foe that plays an important part in Discovery's first season. And at the forefront of Klingon antagonism is T'Kuvma: a strong leader who seeks to unite the Empire brings a new political order to the Alpha Quadrant.

In this episode of The Edge, hosts Amy Nelson and Patrick Devlin are joined by Joe Keegan to discuss the first two episodes of Star Trek: Discovery: "The Vulcan Hello" and "Battle at the Binary Stars." Hindsight, it is said, is 20/20, and we take a new look at these episodes with the advantage of knowing the whole story. Along the way, we find that the Klingon storyline is that much more relevant as we examine Voq, L'Rell, and T'Kuvma and wonder whether or not they will achieve their goal of political unification.

    Runaway.

The end of Star Trek: Discovery's first chapter has left us wanting more. And to help us along, as we wait season two, the writers are giving us Trek Shorts a set of four vignettes that expand upon the characters we have come to love over the past year. The first of these shorts focuses on Sylvia Tilly—now an Ensign—as she encounters an unknown being. We also get to see more of what makes her tick when her mother shows up, holographically, to dispense advice.

In this episode of The Edge, hosts Amy Nelson and Patrick Devlin discuss the first installment of Trek Shorts, diving into the elements we enjoyed and the ones we felt could have delivered more. We also look at how this short story develops a character we love … and one that is newly introduced.

    Runaways, birds, and reptiles.

While we wait for the premier of Star Trek: Discovery season two, currently slated for January 17, 2019, the writers have put together a set of four vignettes to tide us over. Called Trek Shorts, these bite-sized installments promise to flesh out characters we came to know through the first 15 episodes—and introduce us to some new ones.

In this episode of Notes from The Edge, in which we deep-dive into connections between Star Trek: Discovery and the broader Star Trek universe, host C Bryan Jones shares his thoughts on the first episode of Trek Shorts, "Runaway," and what it does for the character of Tilly. We also explore sentient avian and reptilian species seen in past Star Trek.
