What if the dream in your heart was placed there by God for a reason?

Merritt Onsa, host of The Devoted Dreamers Podcast, helps Christian women in midlife find the courage to pursue their God-shaped dreams—even when fear, doubt, and imposter syndrome say they’re not ready.

083 || Why We Should Cease Striving and Learn to Rest || Kasey Shuler Mar 21, 2018
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

Kasey Shuler is an author and Revelation Wellness Personal Trainer. Her two Bible studies include “Love Beyond Looks: A 5-Week Bible Study on Body Image” and “Rest and Rise: Be Refreshed In Your Work.” Starting with the Word, her mission is to encourage others to know Christ and awaken life through movement and prayer. She enjoys swapping ideas with her husband and creating stories with her daughter in Athens, Georgia.

In this interview, Kasey talks about how we should pay attention to what brings us joy. She reminds us that our dreaming begins with resting in the Lord and that this “rest” isn’t necessarily about sleep. Our souls also need rest and the place we find that is in Him. In doing so, we can let go of our striving and focus on Him, learning to rest in Him and trust Him for the outcome.

For those of us who’ve been hard-charging for years, we may have to LEARN to rest and PRACTICE it often to see the fruit in our lives. Pay attention towards the end of the conversation where Kasey talks about allowing things to bloom in their time. It’s such a great reminder to trust the Lord and be patient for what He will bring.

081 || Mining Your Story for the Dream God's Given You || Beth Bruno Mar 07, 2018
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

In the margins of parenting a 17, 14, and 11-year old, Beth Bruno directs a non-profit aimed at preventing domestic minor sex trafficking and regularly speaks to students, law enforcement, educators and community groups around the topic of sexual exploitation. Her first book, A Voice Becoming: A Yearlong Mother-Daughter Journey into Passionate, Purposed Living (FaithWords), released on January 16, 2018. Beth is a proud member of Redbud Writer's Guild, a regular contributor for Red Tent Living, and a writer for various online publications.

In this interview, Beth talks about her journey to becoming a writer when the concept of being “a creative” originally didn’t seem like a worthwhile direction. As we investigate our dreams, she encourages us to ask a few key questions like: What brings you to tears? What stirs you to sacrifice time and money? Who are the people you feel passionate about? Figuring out who those “others” are that we’re called to serve is one of our greatest priorities.

Beth also shares her passion for activating women (and their daughters) to link arms with our global sisters around the world and bring the fullness of who we are to God's kingdom. Her book illustrates her passion for mothers to lead their pre-teen daughters through a year of meaningful conversations, engagement and actions that will give them a bigger vision to live for than the common need to find love, fit in and belong.

This was such a powerful conversation! I pray you not only enjoy hearing about Beth’s journey toward her dream but also about the dream itself, which is so inspirational, especially if you have a daughter.

080 || Letting Grief Fuel Your Dream || Halley Mastrolonardo Feb 28, 2018
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

Halley Mastrolonardo of Wild Grace Collective is a wife, soon-to-be mom, faith and lifestyle blogger, and lettering creative. She loves to share her faith and the Gospel through writing and creativity. Her dream is to encourage other women in their journey and remind them of their worth and value by speaking of God’s love and grace.

As she prepares to meet their first child, she shares the best advice she’s received thus far: to know your season of life. That certainly applies to all of us as it relates to our God-shaped dreams. Halley teaches us about letting go of what people think of us—and how that connects to confession and transparency in our lives. And she talks about how grief, surprisingly, was the thing that spurred her on to pursue her dream. In fact, she says taking those risks to move forward was the thing that kept her from drowning in despair.

Finally, she offers a great reminder to take chances, even when you’re afraid. You never know what God’s going to do with your obedience!

    Show notes

Amy Knuver is a thrift store scrounger, a coffee shop enthusiast, and a lover of watercolor painting who spends her days with 22 inner-city fourth graders who call her Miss K. Amy loves to cook but hates to eat alone so when she’s not teaching, she can be found whipping up a new recipe for friends. God placed the dream of teaching in her heart years ago.

Amy came on the podcast all the way back in August of 2016. At the time, she was headed to Togo, West Africa to pursue her dream of teaching overseas. In that early episode of the podcast, she was struggling with a belief that her flaws and personal challenges might disqualify her from ministry.

This week she’s back with an update on how that first year in Togo, West Africa, went and what unexpectedly shifted within her while she was there. She talks about how she handled the shift in her dream, how difficult circumstances have and are shaping her, and about trusting God as provider even when you don’t see His provision in the timing you expect.

    Show notes

Tiffany Bluhm, author of the Never Alone book and Bible study, is a speaker and writer who is passionate about helping women come to know their value and purpose because of a loving, redeeming God.
In a style that speaks to women right where they are, she shares insights from a life spent chasing after Jesus while walking alongside women from suburbia to the inner city, jails and brothels, and the slums of Kolkata. Tiffany speaks regularly at conferences and events, and writes for several websites, print publications, and popular blogs, including the YouVersion Bible app. She lives in Tacoma, Washington, with her husband and two sons, and blogs at TiffanyBluhm.com.

In this interview, Tiffany helps us dump the mom-guilt that can come with trying to balance dreaming, raising kids, and caring for a home and a husband. Instead she talks about making the most of our time, asking for help when we need it, and how not to miss out on the dream God’s put on your heart—even if you feel too busy to pursue it. Her advice to the dreamer, near the end of our conversation, about finding someone who’s already doing your dream was priceless. You won’t want to miss it!

077 || Because Your Dream Was Never Just About You|| Allison Hale Feb 07, 2018
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

Allison Hale first came to the Dominican Republic as a missionary with her parents at the age of 13. In 2003, she returned with her husband to reside in the city of San Pedro de Macoris. There they have a church plant ministry as well as a Christian school and several other outreach ministries to the community. One of those is The Mercy Workshop, which ministers to women who have been exploited in the sex tourism industry. Allison and a group of women from her church take to the streets to reach hurting women and offer them a safe place for dignified work, making jewelry. They also assist with documents, access to education, and teach them the Word of God and what it means to belong to Him.

In this interview, Allison educates us about how women get caught up in sex trafficking and prostitution from what she’s learned in her nearly 10 years of ministry on the streets of San Pedro, Dominican Republic. She talks about the ministry of Mercy Jewelry, where victims can learn an honorable trade, create something beautiful that others want to buy and wear, earn an income and find practical help as they reshape their lives.

Allison shares about the value of knowing that you’ve done what you can when the day is done. She tells of the fruit that’s come from working with a team, discipling Dominican women, and empowering them to be sent out with God’s word along with the excellent reminder that this is not her burden to carry alone. I love when she shares how this dream started as just a little inkling in her heart from God during four months of prayer.

Dorcas Cheng-Tozun is an award-winning writer and the author of Start, Love, Repeat: How to Stay in Love with Your Entrepreneur in a Crazy Start-up World. She is a columnist for Inc.com and a regular contributor to Christianity Today. Her work has also appeared in dozens of publications in the U.S., U.K., and Asia. Previously, Dorcas worked as a nonprofit and social enterprise professional for a decade. A Silicon Valley native, Dorcas has also lived in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Kenya. She and her entrepreneur husband have two adorable hapa boys.

In this interview, Dorcas reminds us a that just because the path is difficult, or we cannot see the fruit of the work we’re doing or that we feel stuck and alone in this moment, that doesn’t mean God is not with us or we’re not following the right dream.

Some of my other takeaways from this conversation with Dorcas include:

    • The value of knowing yourself and learning to accept and embrace who God made you.
    • That no matter what you feel called to, you need breaks from work, technology, and the day-to-day demands. This was a great reminder of the value of keeping the Sabbath.
    • And how feeling stuck might just be God inviting you into deeper communion with Him.

    Show notes

Simone Halpin is the co-founder and Executive Director of Naomi’s House, a residential safe home in Chicago for women who have suffered from commercial sexual exploitation. With a Master of Arts in Biblical Studies from Moody Theological Seminary, Simone teaches and trains women what it means to love and follow Jesus. She and her husband have four children, and they live in the Chicago area. Naomi's House opened its doors in December 2016, shortly after my first conversation with Simone.

In this interview, Simone provides an update on the day-to-day challenges and joys of stepping into something bigger than herself. She shares about needing to redefine success along the way, the beauty of being rooted and going deeper instead of wider, as well as the importance of clinging to God’s Word as we seek clarity on our God-shaped dream.

It was a pleasure to bring Simone back for a follow-up conversation and to get a glimpse of what has transpired following the opening of Naomi’s House since she and I first talked in fall 2016. As you listen, I hope you hear and see what our big God can do with a willing heart. And that you can easily translate it to your own life.
