    The Devoted Dreamers Podcast

What if the dream in your heart was placed there by God for a reason?

Merritt Onsa, host of The Devoted Dreamers Podcast, helps Christian women in midlife find the courage to pursue their God-shaped dreams—even when fear, doubt, and imposter syndrome say they’re not ready.

Through real conversations with women living out their callings and short solo episodes full of biblical truth and encouragement, you’ll discover:
✨ How to move forward even when you feel unqualified
✨ The source of lies that keep dreamers stuck (and the truth that sets you free)
✨ Practical wisdom for taking the next brave step with God

This is your safe place to wrestle with questions about how to move forward, get clarity for your calling, and remember you don’t have to do it alone.

Together we’re building a community of sisters in Christ who will remind you where your hope lies and encourage you to keep taking the next step.

If you’re ready to stop second-guessing and start walking boldly with Jesus toward the life He’s calling you to, you’re in the right place.

If fear has kept you from walking forward in your God-shaped dream, this episode will remind you that you’re not alone. This conversation with Jenni Eastin will also provide perspective on how to finally move forward even if you can’t see the finish line.

In this interview, Jenni gives us the assurance that God is in control and that we can trust Him enough to surrender our dreams to Him. She shares two intimate, real-life stories that are her constant reminders of these truths and motivation to share the hope she’s found with others.

Jenni helps normalize that feeling of wanting to start on your dream but getting stopped in your tracks by the voices that taunt you with doubts about who you are, how God made you and how you have no business dreaming your dream. But, along this journey, she’s discovered tools that help her fight back against those voices. One is the permission to start sloppy and another is a redefinition of success.

If you’ve ever tried to run away from the dream God’s given you, I hope this interview is just what you need to gain a little perspective and maybe even get started—even if it’s a little sloppy.

Jenni Eastin is a hope-filled, freedom-fighter set on sharing stories that leave a mark on other’s hearts. In everyday life, Jenni gratefully supports and encourages her two children, ages 6 and 10, and has been married to her husband, David, for over 18 years. Jenni has several degrees in special education and behavioral disorders and has most recently earning a PhD from the University of North Texas.

I choose to inhabit my days,

Julie Landreth has a passion for healthy and thriving relationships–especially marriages. She is a speaker and wife coach who loves sharing her passion for prayer and how to cultivate a thriving marriage. She leads a growing number of women in San Jose, CA through her weekly WifeLab curriculum: Loving Well, The Art of Praying for Your Husband. Julie and her husband are celebrating 15 years of cultivating a marriage filled with intentional love. Their secret? A date night every Friday. In addition to speaking, writing, and teaching, Julie is also a freelance photographer and designer.

This conversation with Julie resulted from her reaching out to encourage me last week. I was struggling to feel courageous as I worked on my fear of failure solo episode, and God used her to speak truth to me. At the same time, she volunteered to just “jump in” the next time I needed a last-minute interview.

Julie also blesses us with a few lessons she’s learned by praying for her husband and seeking his good even when she was struggling with negative feelings about their relationship. I first interviewed Julie back in April 2017, shortly after she created her WifeLab curriculum. Now, 18 months later, she relates some of the struggles regarding public speaking opportunities, the fears that still linger, and how she turns them back to the Lord and continues to step forward.

We also talk about what confession and repentance has to do with pursuing your dream in the face of fear.

If you’re still trying to find your way to being brave (or if your marriage is struggling), I pray you’ll find some hope and encouragement in this interview.

096 || When Fear Tries to Tell You You're Not Enough || Solo Episode Oct 16, 2018
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

In this week’s episode we’re talking about fear of failure, which feels ironic because even as I’m speaking on this topic, I’m wrestling with this very fear. Questions like: Am I making any sense? Is this episode even helpful? Or am I just rambling? What if my theology is off and someone calls me on it? Or, more importantly, what if something I say leads someone astray, and I can’t fix it?

The practical reason I started working on this solo episode was that I didn’t have an interview lined up this week. But, truth be told, I’ve been challenged to do more solo episodes, since it feels riskier to me than an interview. Yep. I have some insecurities around this. I fear failing at it. And it feels totally vulnerable to say that right now.

Sure, I wanted to do this solo episode. In fact, the first 10 minutes or so even felt inspired. I was on a roll. But then life happened, I had to hit pause, and a few days passed. When I sat down to wrap it up, anxiety crept in, and I wrestled over and over in my mind with what I wanted to say and whether I could really provide any value to this topic.

But the truth is, it’s not about me. It’s not about how I did creating this episode or talking about this topic. My value is in Christ and His finished work on the cross. He gives me value, even as I’m sitting here struggling with the very same things listeners told me when I asked, what is it about failure that would keep you from your God-shaped dream.

Friends, we are on this road together. Fighting the enemy who wants us to believe we are not enough or that we have nothing to offer this world. I’m pushing back on his lies today. I’m repenting of my desire to operate my own self-salvation project because it *feels* less risky if I keep my hands on the wheel instead of letting go and letting Christ run the show.

My identity is in Christ. Yours is too. He gives us value and worth and the ability to speak truth into the world, to shine a light on Him, and to live out of the gifts and talents He’s given us. If you’ve been avoiding your dream because you fear you might fail; if you’ve stopped taking steps forward because you fear you are not enough; Sister in Christ, let me tell you, you aren’t enough. But He is. And He will bring His work to completion in you. Now, let’s praise His name and give Him all the glory because that truth brings so much more freedom to step forward without fear (or despite fear) knowing that He’s totally got this. No matter the outcome.

Welcome to Season Five of The Devoted Dreamers Podcast!

This week’s guest, Megan Sjuts, is the owner of Building 07, offering a full range of professional design services. Her mission is to simplify the design process and serve creative professionals and business owners. When she is not behind the screen designing for clients, she is teaching graphic design courses at Rogue Community College in Southern Oregon, where she lives with her husband, Elliot, their chocolate lab, Dixie, and four chickens, Sunny, Popcorn, Peanut and Penny.

The word “transition” sums up what life has been like for Megan over the last few years: starting and finishing grad school, marriage, moving across country, starting a business, and teaching at a local community college. If you’d asked her five years ago what she thought her life would look in 2018, I wonder how many of those things would have been on the list. I’m guessing not many!

In this conversation, Megan teaches us her favorite strategy for combating those ugly feelings that come with comparing your behind-the-scenes to what you see in others online. You’ll hear the story of how she discovered graphic design (and it wasn’t because she went looking for this career path) and why not knowing the path in advance doesn’t make it the wrong path. She also shares the lessons she learned from a difficult conversation she had early on with one of her first clients. These will be vital to anyone who is starting a business or dealing with client communications.

If you’ve never felt ready to start working on your dream, this interview offers some perspective and maybe even a kick in the pants to get going even before you feel it.

You’ll find the show notes, links to the resources mentioned, and all the ways to connect with Megan, including her gratitude-based to-do list printable, here: http://www.merrittonsa.com/podcast/95

On-Air Coaching || Session III with Cynthia Culver & Lois Martin || Bonus Episode Jul 25, 2018
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

How has the “broken mindset” kept you from all that God created you to be? Or from the dreams He created you to pursue for His Kingdom?

If you’ve been with us for the last two episodes of On-Air Coaching between me, life coach Cynthia Culver, and Devoted Dreamers listener Lois Martin, maybe you’ve begun to consider your answers to these two questions.

Or, if you’ve started working through the homework (by the way, you’ll find it here, with additional info here and here about how to get the most out of the worksheets) maybe you’ve begun to identify what your broken mindset looks like, feels like or sounds like.

Or maybe you’re a little behind, and if that’s the case, you'll want to listen to Session I or Session II before you listen this one, for a little context.

In this conversation, the final episode in our three-part series, Cynthia focuses on the DEVELOPMENT component of coaching. You’ll hear us cover some topics that might resonate with you:

    • How the “pros” became experts in their field/dream
    • Understanding what triggers your broken mindset
    • How to trigger the mindset of the Spirit instead
    • What to do with negative thoughts that keep coming back
    • Another way to think about failure (or fear of failure)
    • Why perfectionism will keep you from your dream

As you hear Lois talk about how God has worked through the coaching process and what she’s learned along the way, consider what actions have (or could) help you trigger the mindset of truth in you, instead of the broken mindset.

On-Air Coaching || Session II with Cynthia Culver & Lois Martin || Bonus Episode Jul 18, 2018
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

Have you ever wondered what God might do with the passions He’s put in your heart?

Ponder this question with me, life coach Cynthia Culver, and Devoted Dreamers listener Lois Martin in this second of three bonus On-Air Coaching calls.

In this episode, Cynthia’s questions focus on the DIRECTION component of coaching. You’ll hear us cover some topics that maybe you’ve been wrestling with too:

    • The deep passion in your heart that feels God-given
    • The fear that you might pursue that passion poorly
    • Wondering if pursuing your passion/dream is too self-focused
    • Wanting to live freely – in the Spirit – as you pursue your dream
    • How to distinguish your values from your goals
    • The adventure of stepping into your dream and walking with Him in it

Cynthia touches on the Session II homework here, too. It’s focused on helping you understand the mindset of truth, which is all the ways you think when you choose to operate out of God’s word and His truth instead from your fear or your broken mindset.

As you listen to Cynthia’s questions and hear Lois talk about her challenges, I hope you can listen with an ear toward your own story, passions, and specifically the dream God has put on your heart to contribute to His Kingdom.

We talk a lot around here about trying things out, taking baby steps, and figuring out where God is leading you by just doing something (instead of nothing).

Several months ago, I was talking with my friend Cynthia Culver (Ep. 37) about the possibility of testing out an On-Air Coaching session with a listener. We put the word out that we were going to give this a try, found a willing volunteer, and just went for it.

This bonus episode is the result! It’s the first of three sessions you’ll hear with Lois Martin talking with Cynthia through the Discovery, Direction and Development coaching stages so that she might put aside what’s holding her back from pursuing her God-shaped dream.

My hope, with this entire effort, is that as you hear from Lois, you will listen with an ear toward the broken mindset you have that’s keeping you stuck and/or resisting what God has put on your heart to contribute to His Kingdom.

While I'm on maternity leave for the summer, I've prepared a few mini-episodes, each covering a specific topic related to pursuing your God-shaped dream.

Special guest Heather Conklin and I talk in this one about how letting your dream lie fallow can be a good thing for both you and your dream. She shares how this practice is utilized in farming to allow fields to rest and regain nutrients and how she’s interpreting it for taking a break from The Practical Minimalist Podcast for the summer.

If you or your dream could use a creative boost, this 15-minute conversation will help you consider the bold, courageous, and somewhat scary move you might make to put your dream on hold for a season with no expectations or plans for what might come in the future.

Heather Conklin is a Memphis transplant now living near Boulder, Colorado. She’s co-host of the Practical Minimalist Podcast and that, of course, is how we connected, over our mutual love for podcasting. She’s a wife and a mama to two kiddos. I loved getting to know her fiery personality face-to-face over lunch last April.

God created you with a purpose. I’m not just saying that. He says it in His word. “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” (Eph. 2:10)

I’m sharing this short “mini-sode” to tell the story about the baby steps that led me to my God-shaped dream of podcasting. My hope in these 15 minutes is to encourage you in taking your own baby steps toward your dream. Listen for a list of baby step suggestions at the end for your consideration.

    Scripture

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works,
which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
    ~
    Ephesians 2:10

Furthermore, because we are united with Christ, we have received an inheritance from God, for he chose us in advance, and he makes everything work out according to his plan.God’s purpose was that we Jews who were the first to trust in Christ would bring praise and glory to God. And now you Gentiles have also heard the truth, the Good News that God saves you. And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago. The Spirit is God’s guarantee that he will give us the inheritance he promised and that he has purchased us to be his own people. He did this so we would praise and glorify him.
