    The Devoted Dreamers Podcast

What if the dream in your heart was placed there by God for a reason?

Merritt Onsa, host of The Devoted Dreamers Podcast, helps Christian women in midlife find the courage to pursue their God-shaped dreams—even when fear, doubt, and imposter syndrome say they’re not ready.

Through real conversations with women living out their callings and short solo episodes full of biblical truth and encouragement, you’ll discover:
✨ How to move forward even when you feel unqualified
✨ The source of lies that keep dreamers stuck (and the truth that sets you free)
✨ Practical wisdom for taking the next brave step with God

This is your safe place to wrestle with questions about how to move forward, get clarity for your calling, and remember you don’t have to do it alone.

Together we’re building a community of sisters in Christ who will remind you where your hope lies and encourage you to keep taking the next step.

If you’re ready to stop second-guessing and start walking boldly with Jesus toward the life He’s calling you to, you’re in the right place.

094 || Solo Show: Lessons Learned in Two Years of Podcasting || Merritt Onsa Jun 06, 2018
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

When my interview for Episode 94 fell through a few weeks ago, I decided to do a season-closing solo episode talking about what I’ve learned in the last two years of podcasting. It seemed fitting as I just celebrated my second podcasting anniversary on June 1st and am about to take an extended leave from the show following the birth of our second child in mid-June.

In this episode, I share what God’s been teaching me over the last two years of podcasting. However, these lessons aren’t really about starting a podcast. Whatever your dream, you can apply them to your journey. I’ve broken the lessons down into simple takeaways so you can think about how you might start or proceed in following the dream God’s given you. You’ll learn why you don’t have to be perfect to move forward, how to consider the costs of your dream before you get started and why fear must not get the best of you in the process.

IN CASE YOU’RE NEW AROUND HERE, I’LL SHARE A LITTLE INTRODUCTION AS WELL.

For a long time, the only dream I had room for in my heart was marriage. I was obsessed. I tried to dull the ache with social activities, work, achievements, volunteering, media—anything to keep from feeling alone—but all of it left me empty.

However, God is faithful, and He was brewing something in me that I could not imagine at the time -- God-shaped dreams were forming in my heart and waiting in the wings while I longed for what I did not yet have. Fast-forward a decade-plus and even now, married and a mommy, I am reminded that putting my life on hold to wait for “what could be” is a great way to miss out on “what’s right now.”
That’s why I’ve made it my mission to help other women step over what’s holding them back from pursuing their God-shaped dreams. Because I believe God created you for a purpose, with gifts, talents, experiences and passions unique to you. And He did it for His glory and His Kingdom. And I don’t want you to miss being part of that beautiful mission, like I almost did.

Crystal Woodman Miller lives in Morrison Colorado with her husband Pete and three children Lucca, Malachi and Josephine. She is the author of Marked for Life: Choosing Hope and Discovering Purpose After Earth-Shattering Tragedy (NavPress). She is an international speaker on issues of faith and hope in the midst of suffering. Crystal survived the shootings at Columbine High School in 1999, and shares candidly of her own journey of hardship, faith and hope so that it may encourage others in the challenges they face. Crystal also speaks in effort to prevent school violence and to help those who, unfortunately have already been impacted by it. Crystal is most passionate about teaching God’s word and carrying life through the hope of the Gospel to a broken world.

In this conversation, you’ll hear, through Crystal’s example, how God uses our stories – no matter how dark and hopeless -- to make an impact for His Kingdom. You’ll also learn how the enemy of our souls feeds us lies that trick us into insecurity, comparison, and fear to keep us from making that Kingdom impact. And you’ll be reminded, again, that our dreams aren’t really about us.

If you’re suffering or grieving or struggling to find hope in a broken world, I pray this interview gives you hope that God is with you in the midst of it all.

092 || How to Believe God's Sovereignty Over Your Dream || Hunter Beless May 23, 2018
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

Hunter Beless believes God has called her to seek after those He has awakened to guide them back to their Heavenly Father. She passionately exercises this God-given design through her roles as a wife, mama, podcast host, and writer. Though they stumble often, she and her husband Brooks, strive to display God's covenant-keeping love through their marriage and oneness. They have two little girls, Hadley Grace (3) and Davy Kathryn (1) and currently reside in Fort Campbell, KY where Brooks serves in the US Army. Hunter, Brooks, Hadley, and Davy love journeying through life together for the glory of God.

Listening to this episode, you’re going to be bathed in scripture, whether you realize it or not. This woman knows her bible, and it inspires and spurs me on to get to reading (and memorizing!) mine with more regularity. Hunter reminds us that God is so powerful that He can fulfill dreams regardless of circumstances. You’ll learn about re-orienting your fear of the things of this world to the God of the universe and how that gives us courage to keep taking the next step. She also teaches us about embracing our limitedness with the grace and freedom to do what is within your capacity and let go of the rest!

And for all you moms with little ones at home, I asked Hunter after we stopped recording about the resource she’s used to help her 3-year-old daughter memorize God’s word, and I’ve got a link to that in the show notes for you (and me!).

    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

Teresa Swanstrom Anderson's house is bursting at the seams with the loves of her life - her husband and six children (four of whom were born in Ethiopia). In her "spare" time, she writes, speaks about motherhood, adoption, and following your passions, runs her popular blog, hosts gorgeous dinner parties, trains for half marathons, and infuses beauty into every corner of her Denver home. She believes in celebrating the everyday and instilling the love of God and others in her children's hearts. Her book first book, Beautifully Interrupted released on May 15th. Through it all, Teresa holds white-knuckled to joy amid the craziness of everyday life.

In this episode, Teresa shares how she went from not wanting children in her 20s to having a house full of kids today. She reminds us of the truth that God put each one of us here, in this time and place, for a purpose. You’ll learn about her struggle through a season of waiting for God to reveal His plan for her life and how she figured out that the direction she was headed wasn’t it. She also teaches us what happens when we forget that closed doors are actually an answer to prayer if we’re praying for doors to be opened.

Bailey T. Hurley is a speaker, writer and online shop owner who invites women to creatively build rooted community in their corners of the world. Her dream is to see women rooting themselves in the creative love of God so they can creatively love others. Bailey resides in Denver with her husband, Tim, and their toddler son, Hunter.

In this episode, Bailey and I talk a lot about friendship – the good and the challenging. You’ll learn what it looks like to invest and grow intentional friendships, why Bailey believes loving others is an integral part of our relationship with God, and how we can do this not just with grand gestures of hospitality but also the very real, every day acts of building community.

On the topic of our dreams, she’s honest about the time it takes to figure out your dream, the reality of waiting on the fruit of your investment in your dream, and the joy in pursuing what God has created you to do…even if sometimes you feel like throwing in the towel.

088 || Why You Don't Have to Be Perfect to Pursue Your Dream || Jessica Mathisen Apr 25, 2018
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

Jessica Mathisen hails from Marietta, Georgia, and graduated from the University of Georgia in 2010 with a degree in Early Childhood Education. After graduation, she moved to Chihuahua, Mexico, where she taught elementary grades at a mission school. Upon returning to Athens, she taught for another four years in the public school system and at Downtown Academy. Jessica and Rory met on eHarmony in 2014, and unbeknownst to them, they both attended Watkinsville First Baptist Church, where she is now the Executive Administrative Assistant. They were married in 2015, and you can find them in Athens, Georgia, hanging out with friends, eating yummy food, or reading on the couch with their dog, Bailey.

In this episode, Jessica reminds us we don’t have to be perfect to pursue our dream. In fact, our desire for perfection can often stand in the way of our dream. She encourages us that our dream is really God’s dream, and it’s meant for His glory and the good of others. You’re going to love her story about being bold with her former boss to go after a need she knew she could fill. (Don’t we all need a little more boldness as we walk towards our dreams?) You’ll also learn from her why it’s so important to share your dreams with others.

Blythe Scott has a passion is to see Christ’s purposes furthered on this earth and to help mobilize and equip the Church to join Him in the “renewal of all things,” further redemption, and advocate for the vulnerable through politics and policy. Over the years, this passion has become focused on the intersection of faith and politics, and Blythe has spent much of her professional and personal life working in this arena. Her passion also led her to co-found Denver City Forum in the spring of 2017, which helps Christians engage – and engage well – with one another and with non-Christians on topics of politics, policy and culture in today’s world.

In this episode, Blythe talks about Denver City Forum and its mission in the city of Denver. She also shares what it feels like to be misunderstood in her dream, how she’s dealt with that disappointment and offers suggestions, in case it happens with you and your dream. You will also learn the value of not overthinking your dream (which can stand in the way of getting started) and gain a helpful tip about a morning ritual to help curb your thinking so you can be more fruitful and Christ-centered in your day.

In addition to City Forum, Blythe is a consultant for the faith-based education reform non-profit, The Expectations Project (TEP). Prior to TEP, Blythe was a Fellow at The Clapham Group, the Outreach Director for her church in Washington, DC (The District Church), and helped found DC127, a foster care non-profit focused on equipping, mobilizing, and uniting churches around foster care and adoption. Her passions also include reading, talking all things Narnia, all animals, trail running and exploring (or “runsploring”) her beautiful home state of Colorado and, most importantly, spending time with her amazing husband and baby girl (adopted in September of 2017)!

Heather Holleman, PhD, is a speaker, college instructor, and writer who loves helping women connect with Jesus and delight in studying the Bible for themselves. She is the author of Seated with Christ, Guarded by Christ and Included in Christ. Her new book, Chosen for Christ, will be released fall 2018 from Moody Publishers. Heather teaches advanced writing at Penn State and has received numerous awards for excellence in teaching and mentorship during her career. She also serves alongside her husband, Ashley, in graduate student ministry with Cru's Faculty Commons. They live in Pennsylvania with their two teen daughters and three cats. Heather writes daily at HeatherHolleman.com. She loves walking with her neighbors, baking with her daughters, and writing whenever she can.

In this interview, Heather Holleman reminds us that we can be deceived into thinking there’s life in the dream, instead of finding life in the Dream Maker. She shares the incredible power and joy we can find in living for the praise of God’s glory, as it says in Ephesians 1:12, and talks about her daily practice of confessing the sin of self-exaltation. Finally, she talks about how the Lord may bring us through a season of preparation before we really see our dream come to fruition and what we can do in the meantime.
