    The Devoted Dreamers Podcast

What if the dream in your heart was placed there by God for a reason?

Merritt Onsa, host of The Devoted Dreamers Podcast, helps Christian women in midlife find the courage to pursue their God-shaped dreams—even when fear, doubt, and imposter syndrome say they’re not ready.

Through real conversations with women living out their callings and short solo episodes full of biblical truth and encouragement, you’ll discover:
✨ How to move forward even when you feel unqualified
✨ The source of lies that keep dreamers stuck (and the truth that sets you free)
✨ Practical wisdom for taking the next brave step with God

This is your safe place to wrestle with questions about how to move forward, get clarity for your calling, and remember you don’t have to do it alone.

Together we’re building a community of sisters in Christ who will remind you where your hope lies and encourage you to keep taking the next step.

If you’re ready to stop second-guessing and start walking boldly with Jesus toward the life He’s calling you to, you’re in the right place.

Ep 107 Show Notes are here: https://www.merrittonsa.com/podcast/107

In this solo episode, I’m talking about identity, specifically our identity in Christ as daughters of the Most High King. You’ll hear how I struggled early on as a Christian to even understand what this means and how to live it out. To explain what it means to find our identity in Christ, I also share what it’s not, meaning you’re going to hear a bit about my messy life before Jesus (um, yes, it’s still messy AFTER Jesus but just in a different way now!)

I share a bunch of verses from scripture as proof that this is who we are: Daughters of the Most High King, in the hope that you’ll be inspired to dig into God’s Word to see for yourself how this truth is reflected there (not because of who we are but because of Who He is). If you don’t believe it right now, that’s okay. But then, once you see it for yourself in His Word, I hope you’ll begin to rehearse it in your own mind (i.e. renew your mind with this truth) and then begin to believe it and live it out and let it be the freedom and hope with which you pursue whatever dream God has placed on your heart to do with your one precious life.

105 || Because Your Dream Increases Your Intimacy with God || Krista Hengesh Jan 16, 2019
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

This month's theme is You Are a Daughter of the King. I love how well this interview fits that topic!

In this episode, Krista Hengesh, founder of Live Salted—a college and millennial women’s ministry – talks about the incredible amount of faith required to step out into what God has called you to do, especially when you don’t know what the results are going to be. We cover the reality of the spiritual warfare we’ll face when we are walking in His will and seeking to make Him more famous. This episode offers the reminder that you are a daughter of the King and that when you “step out of the boat,” as Krista says, and trust Him with your dream, your life, your everything, your dependence on Him will naturally need to increase and thus will grow your intimacy with Him.

Krista is a dreamer at heart taking 1 Corinthians 2:9 at its word and believing if she has thought it, God has to out do it. Krista loves all things outdoors, playing with the hypothetical, discovering new places, and digging deep with others in conversation. She believes in the power of scripture, and she draws perspective for her everyday knowing she is living in light of eternity and her time here on earth is temporary and precious. She currently lives in Seattle, Washington where she runs Live Salted full time while partnered with a local college ministry located at the corner of the University of Washington. She believes it is the biggest blessing to be able to do online ministry while being so invested in a city and its people.

104 || How Your Dreams Draw You Closer to God || Merritt Onsa Dec 12, 2018
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

I’m wrapping up the podcast for 2018 this week; this is the last episode of the year, and I’m trying something a little different.

Back in November, I was invited to speak to a local MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) group in Golden, Colorado. The MOPS theme this year is Find Your Fire – an excellent fit for the conversations we’re having every week on The Devoted Dreamers Podcast. So, I recorded that talk, and I’m sharing it with you this week in lieu of an interview. I’ll be back on January 9, 2019, with all new interviews for Season Five.

In this episode, you’ll learn some of my real-life tips about how to find time for your dream, even as a busy mom/entrepreneur/wife, etc. You will be inspired to believe in the value of your dream not only for the dream itself but also for the ways it will draw you closer to the Father as you take risks, leave your comfort zone and do scary things to pursue it.

Hear why you’ll face opposition, what that looks like for other dreamers (including the most accomplished women you know) and how you can fight back in the face of these challenges. We also talk about letting go of the mom-guilt and, instead, discovering the benefits to your kids as you take time to pursue the dream God has placed on your heart.

103 || How God Uses the Things We Least Expect to Bless Us || Amy Wright Dec 05, 2018
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

In this episode, Amy Wright, creator of The Big Family Home blog, talks openly about the shame she has battled in her dream to write and encourage other moms on their journey. Our conversation is a reminder that God doesn’t want us to live in shame or guilt. We are called, instead, to live in freedom; it is for freedom that Christ has set you free (Galatians 5:1).

Amy and I commiserate on how easily we fall into the belief that everyone else is “doing this better than me,” whether that’s motherhood or our dream. (By the way, this is a lie that’s intended to crush your spirit and your desire. Don’t let it!)

Hear why it’s so important to remember you’re not alone in the challenges related to your God-shaped dream and that the struggle itself doesn’t define you. God meets you there, frees you up, and if you’ll let us, we’ve got a tribe of listeners and dreamers over on Facebook who would love to cheer you on as you take scary step after scary step toward what the Lord has prepared in advance for you.

A bit more about Amy Wright:

Amy and her grade-school-crush-turned-husband have an amazing love story. They have six kids from tween to toddler, as well as one long-term exchange student who is 16. Amy grew up as an only child of divorced parents. Her dad suffered from addiction, and her mom worked long hours to provide for her daughter. Though she lacked a model for how to be a good wife and care for a home, God is using those challenges for Amy’s good and has given her a passion to encourage other women in their journey of becoming the mother God made them to be.

    102 || When Everything Falls Apart || Merritt Onsa Nov 28, 2018
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

In this week’s episode, I confess my most recent blunder related to the podcast – in real time – and use my mistake to share some reflections on the journey God has used in my life to uncover my God-shaped dream. It isn’t a formula; our dreams don’t really work like that. My hope in sharing these steps (beyond lacking an interview and still wanting to have something to post today) is that you’ll find yourself somewhere on this continuum and gain some insight about what you might need next in the journey toward your God-shaped dream.

Here’s the list I reference throughout the episode. You’ll find timestamps for each item in the show notes here: http://www.merrittonsa.com/podcast/102

Steps to Uncovering & Pursuing Your God-Shaped Dream

    1. Know your value and worth in Jesus
    2. Believe He created you for a purpose
    3. Investigate your gifts, talents and life experiences that inform the identification of your dream
    4. Recover from the shame that keeps you in hiding or in fear
    5. Realize and own your true identity
    6. Build a set of internal and external tools to keep yourself returning to your identity in Christ
    7. Examine your dream and why you SHOULDN’T pursue it
    8. Pray with open hands about your dream
    9. Determine your next steps
    10. Consider where you’ll find the support you need to keep taking those steps
    11. Figure out what information and/or training you lack and where you might find it
    12. Be honest with yourself about what help you’ll need to recruit to keep going

Please jump over to my Instagram or the Show Notes page and leave your comment about where you think you are on this list and what might be helpful to you in getting through that step and moving on to the ones that lie ahead for you. I can’t wait to hear your reactions!

101 || Finding Your Dream Among Too Many Options || Jane Springer Nov 21, 2018
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

In this week’s episode, wellness and style coach Jane Springer reminds us that God often uses the difficulties and challenges He has allowed in our lives to serve as inspiration for our dreams. In her case, it was her own health struggles that led to her desire to help other women with theirs.

She teaches us the importance of learning to pay attention to what’s going on inside of you as you consider a direction for your dream. She also offers an example and a challenge on the importance of being true to who God created us to be—our authentic self.

Jane demonstrates courage in sharing her dream because she’s willing to talk about it even though it’s not yet perfect. She has wrestled with indecision along the way, which hasn’t been without consequence. I appreciate the realness with which she shares those struggles and reminds us that struggle is often part of the process of dreaming.

In hearing her story, you’ll discover the value of trusting God’s timing and the importance of waiting on Him to show you what’s next instead of stepping out because you’ve grown impatient with the wait.

A bit more about Jane Springer:

Jane is a Certified Life, Wellness and Style Coach. She began her wardrobe consulting business in 2012 and has been coaching women since 2014. Jane’s dream is to help women to feel as beautiful as God knows they are. Through one-on-one coaching, presentations and retreats, Jane help women get unstuck and move forward in their relationships, work, health and their God-given purpose. She is an active volunteer for her church as a religious educator and marriage prep facilitator, and she relishes her role as wife, mom, step-mom and grandmother to 10-year-old twins.

    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

Foundshop is an online vintage resale shop for affordable, sustainable and ethical clothing. Founder, Rebekah Twinem, shares in this episode what God has taught her in starting up her shop—first and foremost that her dreams are not too frivolous.

You’ll learn what lights her fire about this work, especially the impact of our shopping dollars on other people and the environment. With her gentle, soft-spoken (and non-judgmental) spirit she shares her calling to consider and not just consume, to find ways to consume less, or differently, or to do so with a greater awareness.

She also uncovers probably the most important thing about our God-shaped dreams that can be easily forgotten when you’re facing a challenge or a very real fear—that God’s going use this dream to deepen your connection with Him. She gives us a beautiful reminder of His longing to be close to His children, regardless of our failure or success.

Rebekah is also a wife, mama, and an encourager at heart. Her dream for Foundshop was born out of a love for vintage clothing and a deep concern for people and the planet. It is her mission to spread the word about fair fashion that respects the people who make our clothing and the Earth, without sacrificing beautiful style.

Maybe you’ve been questioning the significance of your dream or maybe that questioning has led you to totally put that dream aside. If that’s you, I hope Rebekah’s story encourages you to consider all the ways God might use your “insignificant” dream, desire or passion for His Kingdom and your good.
