    We Have a Deal! Feb 15, 2019
    Show notes

A deal has been reached to avert another government shutdown, but it comes with a twist! The President will sign the compromise bill which only gives him a fraction of the money he wanted to construct a border wall, but he will also declare a national emergency to get the rest. Caitlin Emma, budget reporter for Politico, joins us for what’s next, legal challenges to the national emergency declaration.

Next, big news in the business world, Amazon has canceled its plans to build its HQ2 in Long Island City, NY. To the surprise of many, the back out is seen as a victory by local lawmakers and housing activists which had a problem with the $3B in tax incentives that Amazon was going to receive. On the other hand, land developers and others are angry at the missed opportunity in lost economic activity. My producer Miranda joins us for why Amazon is backing out.

Finally, Panera Bread had a vision of conscious capitalism. A restaurant that used a pay-what-you-want model to help feed those that could not afford to pay full price. Well, that experiment has failed and after 9 years is closing its last Panera Cares store in Boston. Brenna Houck, reporter for Eater.com, joins us for what went wrong.

Mating Matters and How Online Dating Can Be Addictive Feb 14, 2019
    Show notes

Once again, we have another spy in our midst. The Justice Department just unsealed an indictment against a former Air Force counterintelligence officer on espionage charges for allegedly revealing classified info to Iran. Eric Geller, cyber security reporter for Politico, joins us for more on Monica Witt, who defected to Iran and gave away some of our secrets.

Next, since its Valentine’s Day, let’s talk about love and the gamification of dating. It’s all around us… viral matchmaker shows to find love or apps that we use to endlessly swipe on to find a date, all this technology might actually be making it harder to meet “the one.” Jessie Li, reporter for Axios, joins us to talk about how apps are the new norm in dating and how it affects us.

Finally, we talk to Dr. Wendy Walsh, psychology professor and author, who has a new podcast out called Mating Matters. In her new podcast she uses the science of human behavior to talk about love and sex and how mating instincts control everything we do. Mating Matters is out now on iHeart Radio or whenever you get your podcasts.

El Chapo's Story May Be Coming to a Close Feb 13, 2019
    Show notes

Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, the notorious drug kingpin, has been found guilty in his US trial after six days of deliberations by the jury. Throughout the trial which started last November, gave us a look into the inner workings of a $14 billion drug empire. His sentencing now comes up in June. My producer Miranda joins us for all the details and some of the trial highlights.

Next, we speak to Joanna Stern from the WSJ, who asked a certified ethical hacker to get into as many of her webcams as he could. He was easily able to get into her system, snap shots of her and even spy on her child through a Wi-Fi connected baby monitor. Joanna joins us for some tips on how to protect yourself, and the big realization, we are often our own worst enemies.

Finally, after two years and 200 interviews the Senate Intelligence Committee is getting ready to wrap up its investigation into the 2016 election and it seems to be a big win for the president. They have uncovered no direct evidence of a conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Russia. Daniel Lippman, reporter for Politico, joins us for the Senate report and what it means for other investigations.

Now Hiring: Border Patrol Agents Feb 12, 2019
    Show notes

As we are facing another potential government shutdown if no deal is reach on funding for President Trump’s border wall, border security continues to be a major topic. One aspect of border security has to do with our border patrol agents and the struggle to recruit and keep agents. It’s a tough job, with harsh conditions, and there is also an issue with overtime pay. Ted Hesson, immigration reporter for Politico, joins us for more.

Next, the leaks continue to drip out from the White House. Axios has published another round of President Trump’s private schedules, again showing that he spends a lot of his day in unstructured “Executive Time.” The White House is furious about the leaks and expects some type of action to be taken this week. Alayna Treene, reporter for Axios, joins us for more on the leaks.

Finally, my favorite story coming out of the weekend, #DontWash. Fox News host Pete Hegseth said that he hasn’t washed his hands in 10 years, and germs are not a real thing because he can’t see them. While he was joking on the air, the Twitterverse exploded with tons of people expressing outrage over how someone could not wash their hands. My producer Miranda joins us to talk about how to properly wash your hands.

    Testing Your Dog's DNA Feb 11, 2019
    Show notes

Another huge week in the political world is upon us. The ongoing crisis in Virginia continues as the top three elected officials face calls to resign amid scandals of wearing blackface and sexual assault. Fears of another government shutdown have grown as efforts to make any type of compromise have stalled again over immigration enforcement. Finally, the race for the Democratic presidential nomination is growing as Elizabeth Warren and Amy Klobuchar have entered the race. Ginger Gibson, political reporter for Reuters, break it all down for us.

Next, as relatively inexpensive genetic testing is all over the place, we are getting a chance to learn a little more about our best friends. You can now do genetic test for you dogs, and it works much like the ones for humans, swab the mouth, send it in and get your results. There a number of different companies offering services, each with a different focus, different results, and varying costs. Sarah Fallon at Wired, tested her dog with three different companies. She joins us to talk about the results and which might be best for you and your pup.

The Mysterious Murder of Tomi Masters Feb 08, 2019
    Show notes

The line came from President Trump during the State of the Union Address, if there is going to be peace and legislation, there cannot be war and investigation. But that is exactly what is ramping up. While the Mueller probe may be winding down, Democrats are starting to look into Trump’s taxes and business dealings and another investigation is looking into money that came into the president’s inaugural committee. Daniel Lippman, reporter for Politico, joins us to break down all the news investigations.

Next, a crazy story about 23 year old Tomi Masters who moved to California from Indiana to make it big in the cannabis industry. What happened to her however was tragic and still unresolved. She met a hacker who introduced her to a dark world of digital manipulation and fear which led to her death, found floating in a river in the Philippines. Now, the two men who are suspects in her death, her hacker boyfriend and another hacker who started the UGNazi hacktivist group, are due in court soon. Davey Alba, reporter for Buzzfeed news joins us for this wild story.
