    Show notes

Philadelphia has become the first major city to ban cashless stores. Lawmakers want to maintain access to the marketplace for lower-income consumers that may not have credit and debit cards, but Amazon and other business are expressing concerns about limits on innovation. Scott Calvert, reporter for the WSJ, joins us to talk about the debate over going cashless.

Next, as diet fads come and go, one of the latest trends to gain traction is that of intermittent fasting. While fasting is not a new concept, people are connecting through apps to track their progress and support each other as they typically go 16 hours without eating, sometimes more. My producer Miranda once went 49 hours without a meal. Shari Rudavsky, health and medicine reporter with the Indy Star, joins us to talk about how it all works.

Finally, last year more that 3.5 million people cut the cord. And as the streaming wars continue, Disney+ is going to be a major player. Estimates say that they could eventually draw 160 million subscribers, more than Netflix current 139 million. What people are really getting excited for is that the Disney Vault is going away, so you will be able to see your favorite Disney favorite anytime. My producer Miranda joins us for more.

    Show notes

The FDA this week approved a controversial drug to help treat depression and it the first new antidepressant to be greenlit in decades. It is a nasal spray branded as Spravato made by Johnson and Johnson and is very similar to Ketamine. The benefit of this nasal spray is its fast acting impact on depression symptoms. Peter Loftus, reporter for the WSJ, joins us for more on this new drug.

Next, phone numbers are quickly becoming the new social security numbers. Your mobile phone number is becoming the primary way for tech companies like Facebook to identify users and secure your accounts, think two-factor authentication. Scott Rosenberg, technology editor at Axios, joins us for the big problem, your phone and number are being used like access keys, and how often do you want to give that information away.

Finally, R. Kelly has broken his silence on the latest sexual abuse claims against him. In a nearly 80 minute interview he did with Gayle King from CBS, R. Kelly denies all the allegations, says everyone is lying about him and plays the victim claiming he has too big of a heart. It is an explosive interview and my producer Miranda joins us to break it all down.

Even Congress is Cliquey Mar 06, 2019
    Show notes

Amazing health and science news as we find out that there may be a second person cured of HIV after getting a stem cell transplant. A man known as the “London patient” had a stem cell transplant from a donor who had a natural immunity to HIV. The transplant changed his immune system and gave him the donor’s HIV resistance. Betsy McKay, senior writer at Wired, joins us for how it all worked.

Next, freshman Democrats in Congress are forming alliances in a bid to gain friendships and influence, and it’s just like high school. Sarah Ferris, congressional reporter for Politico, joins us to introduce you to the House’s freshman cliques: The Gang of Nine, The Squad, and the Big Six.

Finally, a story with a happy ending. Two California sisters ages 5 and 8 are safely back home with their parents after being lost in the woods for 44 hours. Leia and Caroline Carrico relied on some wilderness training they had to keep warm and dry after getting lost on a hike. They spoke to the media to recount their ordeal and it might be the cutest thing you’ve heard in a long time. My producer Miranda joins us to break down the story.

Steven Spielberg vs Netflix Mar 05, 2019
    Show notes

: The war between President Trump and the House Democrats has officially started. On Monday the House Judiciary Committee sent document requests to 81 individuals and entities related to President Trump and his inner circle. Spencer Ackerman, senior national security correspondent for the Daily Beast, joins us to talk about the 3 broad areas of interest Democrats are probing: Allegations of obstruction of justice, public corruption, and other abuses of power.

Next, Amazon is continuing its quest to infiltrate every part of your life. After changing the online retail industry and buying Whole Foods, they are now planning to launch a new grocery store business. This new effort would not directly compete with Whole Foods and allow it to carry products they can’t carry there. Heather Haddon, reporter for the WSJ, joins us to talk about where the industry is heading, big retailers combining e-commerce with physical stores.

Finally, despite winning 3 Oscars for Roma, Netflix is still getting no love. Legendary director Steven Spielberg is on a quest to boot Netflix from Oscar consideration. In his view, once you pick TV as a format, you should be competing for Emmy's. My producer Miranda joins us for Spielberg’s fight to keep Netflix from playing with the big boys.

Trump at CPAC, Weed Breathalyzer, and Sleeping In Mar 04, 2019
    Show notes

After a tough week with collapsed denuclearization talks with North Korea and negative testimony by Michael Cohen, President Trump returned to the safety of his base at CPAC 2019. The president went on for over 2 hours railing against everything from trade to immigration to the Mueller probe. Ginger Gibson, political reporter for Reuters, joins us for CPAC news and Republican pressure to back down on his border emergency declaration.

Next, we are about to get the first marijuana breathalyzer by a California start up called Hound Labs. While a drug test can tell is someone has used marijuana in the last several days to weeks, none of them can tell is someone has just smoked or is currently high. This breathalyzer aims to change that. Erin Brodwin, science reporter at Business Insider, joins us to talk about who is behind it, and where law enforcement will be trying it out.

Finally, my favorite thing to do on the weekends, catching up on sleep, might not actually be as good for you as you think. A new study suggests that burning the candle during the week and catching up on the weekends is not an effective health strategy which could lead to weight gain and an increased risk of diabetes. My producer Miranda joins us to talk about sleeping in on the weekends.

Keep Your Kids Safe on YouTube - No No Momo Mar 01, 2019
    Show notes

After a lot of hype and with the back drop of the public testimony from Michael Cohen, we found out that the second summit with Trump and Kim Jong Un had collapsed. No deal was made and the summit was even cut short. The main issue that could not be agreed upon were the lifting of sanctions on North Korea. Dave Lawler, Axios World Editor, joins us for a breakdown of the Hanoi summit.

Next, YouTube has been having a lot of problems related to its services and children. First, they disabled comments on millions of videos where users were commenting with timestamps on videos that showed minors in suggestive positions or situations. Second, reports said their YouTube Kids platform was showing children videos with disturbing behavior on them. Louise Matsakis, security writer at Wired, joins us for how to help protect your kids.

Finally, millennials are experiencing buyer’s remorse after purchasing a house. The top reason why… they didn’t realize how much it costs for maintenance. Others are using social media to find a house and aren’t visiting the neighborhoods they might be living in. Diana Olick, real estate correspondent at CNBC, joins us for how to avoid buyer’s remorse.

    A Trump Insider Confesses a LOT Feb 28, 2019
    Show notes

These congressional hearings are quickly becoming must-watch TV. Michael Cohen gave his public testimony about all his dealings with President Trump and there were some big moments. Cohen testified that Trump is a racist, a conman and a cheat. He accused the President of having knowledge of and directing hush money payments to Stormy Daniels, he said the president know that there would be a WikiLeaks dump of DNC emails, and also that he knew about conversations about a Trump Tower Moscow project.

Republicans all the while, tried to paint Cohen as a liar who can’t be trusted. Ginger Gibson, political reporter for Reuters, was in the room for the testimony and helps break down the highlights.

Next, another crazy story of a teacher having a sexual relationship with a student. 27 year old Brittany Zamora was arrested after having sex with her 13 year old student. They would send each other text messages, pass notes in class, and even had another student stand watch while they had sex in the classroom. It was all thanks to the boy’s parents for noticing something different about their boy that brought the whole thing to light. My producer Miranda joins us for the details.
