Is This The End For Obamacare? Mar 28, 2019
    Show notes

Earlier this week the DOJ reversed course and announced that it is siding with a district court ruling that said the Affordable Care Act was unconstitutional. Hoping to strike the law down entirely, President Trump is also trying to rebrand the GOP as “The Party of Healthcare.” Sam Baker, healthcare editor for Axios, joins us this new development and how split the president’s party is on this new course of action.

Next, McDonald’s has just made its biggest acquisition in two decades in a deal worth $300 million. It is an Israeli startup called Dynamic Yield, which McDonald’s hopes will take them from mass marketing to mass personalization. You will first see Dynamic Yield’s technology at the drive thru window where digital displays can change in real time based on factors such as weather and what the customer is ordering. My producer Miranda joins us for more.

Finally, you’ve heard of the placebo effect, but what about its evil twin the nocebo effect? It’s when a person experiences negative symptoms from an inert pill or treatment, sometimes even from verbal suggestions. Studies are currently being done to better understand placebo and nocebo effects. Shayla Love, science writer at Vice, joins us to discuss how it all works.

The FBI May Still Have a Case Against Jussie Smollett Mar 27, 2019
    Show notes

All charges dropped and record wiped clean. Actor Jussie Smollett, who was charged with disorderly conduct for filing a false police report about being the victim of an alleged hate crime has been cleared, but the story is not over. Prosecutor Joe Magats, who dropped the charges said they did not exonerate Jussie. Aamer Madhani, reporter for USA Today, joins us from Chicago to discuss why charges were dropped.

Next, attorney Michael Avenatti has been arrested and charged in NY with trying to extort Nike of more than $20 million, as well as charges in CA for bank fraud and embezzlement. Avenatti claimed to represent an AAU coach who had evidence the Nike employees paid off some players and demanded payment himself or make the news public. Kendall Baker, sports editor at Axios, joins us for what’s lost in the headlines, the dark side of college basketball bribery.

Finally, the CBD boom is here and the FDA is having a hard time keeping up. CBD is a marijuana and hemp extract that does not give you the high of THC and it is blurring the lines between a drug and a dietary supplement. It is being positioned as a cure all and put in shampoos, ointments, drops, and more. Sarah Owermohle, healthcare reporter at Politico, joins us for how the FDA plans to handle CBD.

More Mueller Fallout Mar 26, 2019
    Show notes

Now that the cloud over Trump’s presidency has been lifted, where do we go from here? After being cleared of collusion with Russia and mostly cleared of obstruction of justice, the president’s advisers and lawyers are demanding apologies from his detractors and have a new target, House Intel Chairman Adam Schiff, and they’re calling for his resignation. Daniel Lippmann, reporter for Politico joins us for the political fallout of the Mueller report.

Next, let’s check in on one of the President’s priorities… the border. New data from the Dept. of Homeland Security shows that the number of immigrants arrested or turned away at the southern border has continued to climb to levels not seen for years and detention centers are overcrowded to the point that ICE and CBP have begun releasing some migrant families almost immediately instead of holding them in detention. Stef Kight, reporter for Axios, joins us for what’s happening at the border.

Finally, all signs point to yes. The news is that it is almost certain that former vice president Joe Biden will run for president in 2020, adding to the already crowded field of Democrats vying for the nomination. But there are still questions about Biden’s age who is 76 right now. Ginger Gibson, political reporter for Reuters, joins us for the Biden bid and how other Dems will run against Trump.

Mueller Report Results Mar 25, 2019
    Show notes

Attorney General William Barr’s summary of Special counsel Robert Mueller’s report is out and it did not find evidence that President Donald Trump’s campaign “conspired or coordinated” with Russia to influence the 2016 election but it also did not make a conclusion on whether Trump obstructed justice. The president was very happy and declared it a “complete and total exoneration.” While this is a victory for the president, the fight still continues as Democrats are demanding that the full report made public. I’ll break down what we know so far.

Next, you’ve heard of genetically modified foods, we now have the first gene-edited food being served in the Midwest, but no one knows exactly where just yet. A product known as Calyno oil which was made from gene-edited soybeans to have fewer saturated fats and zero trans fats is being served as some Midwestern restaurants. Megan Molteni, science reporter at Wired, joins us for how this gene-edited soybean came to be.

Finally, we have been told for years to watch what we post on social media to protect your privacy and you data. Now posting suspect behavior could make your insurance more expensive. Insurers are likely to add social media to the data they review before issuing policies. Ellen Byron, reporter for the WSJ, joins us for why it might not be a good idea to post pics of your latest rock climbing adventure or even happy hour.

Steps Closer to the End of the Mueller Probe Mar 22, 2019
    Show notes

Everyone in the political world is on pins and needles again for the end of the Mueller probe. The buzz is that any day now the probe could end. But don’t hype yourself up too much. While President Trump has said he wants the “ridiculous” report to be made public, the ball is in Attorney General William Barr’s court on how much we will actually see. Darren Samuelsohn, WH reporter for Politico joins us for what to expect.

Next, we finally get to tell you about the first high profile mob killing in 34 years. Last week, Gambino crime family boss Francesco “Frankie Boy” Cali was shot and run over with a truck outside his home. The culprit was 24 year old Anthony Comello who has no mob ties, but may have been interested in Cali’s niece. My producer Miranda joins us for what we know.

Finally, one of the biggest demographic trends of the past 50 years is the rise of singles. The Census Bureau reported that 48% of adults were either divorced or never married. Singles in America still face a certain stigma, but studies also suggest that they become happier as they age. Elizabeth Bernstein, columnist for the WSJ, joins us to talk about the art of being single.

    Show notes

There is a very interesting legal fight playing out right now, phase 1 is done and we are moving to phase 2. A jury has just found that a man named Edwin Hardeman developed cancer from exposure to Roundup weedkiller he used in his yard. Hardeman developed non-Hodgkin lymphoma after using Roundup for 26 years on his yard. Sara Randazzo, legal reporter for the WSJ joins us for details of the case and what to expect for Phase 2 of the trial, determining what liability Bayer and Monsanto have.

Next, an incredible story about finding family and living with the new reality that you might have 50 brothers and sisters. Jacoba Ballard knew she was donor-conceived and wanted to find some half siblings who might have had the same donor. Her investigation led her to find other siblings and something unexpected. It all pointed to one man, Donald Cline. Cline was a fertility doctor who was accused of using his own sperm to impregnate women who came to him for artificial insemination. Sarah Zhang, writer at the Atlantic, joins us for this crazy story and how all the newfound siblings feel now that the truth is out.

Robert Kraft Prostitution Plea Deal and HOA Battle From Hell Mar 20, 2019
    Show notes

An update in the Robert Kraft prostitution solicitation case… Prosecutors have offered to drop charges against Kraft and 24 other men, but there is a catch… the proposed agreement calls for the men to admit they would have been proven guilty at trial, along with some other requirements such as community service and taking an STD test. While this may be an option for some involved the stakes are higher for Kraft, who still has to deal with the NFL. My producer Miranda joins us for this proposed deal.

Next, it is the most expensive, active HOA case of its type in the country right now and legal fees for both parties are almost at $1 million dollars! The case revolves around a wall. A decorative wall built around a plant bed on the side of Jim Hildenbrand’s house. Jim Carlton, reporter for the WSJ, joins us for this crazy story with a key tip… read all those HOA rules before you sign.

Finally, some news out of the retail and e-commerce world. New data out proves just how strong the hold Amazon has over its consumers and other big retailer need to watch out. When consumers are ready to buy a product, 74% of them go straight to Amazon before anywhere else. Lauren Thomas, retail reporter at CNBC, joins us for that, and also why you might be spending more time on Instagram… You can now buy items you see directly from the app.

YouTube Hit The Panic Button Mar 19, 2019
    Show notes

On March 15, New Zealand changed forever when a terrorist decided to kill 50 people at two Mosques in Christchurch. That terrorist also livestreamed his attack and it spread online for hours. A lot has been made about how ineffective social media platforms were in containing the video and its copies. Facebook for its part said it removed 1.5 million videos with images from the shooting. Elizabeth Dwoskin, Silicon Valley correspondent for the Washington Post, joins us for how YouTube handled the situation. They assembled a team of incident commanders and hit the panic button, disabling recent uploads and cutting out human content moderators letting AI take the driver seat.

Next, we are learning more about the two Boeing 737 Max jet crashes that have grounded the plane from operating. Increasingly it seems that the culprit was the new MCAS flight control system put in place. Andrew Freedman, science editor at Axios, joins us for the latest. Pilots were not adequately trained on how to operate this new system, and now there are investigations into how the plane itself was certified. It seems time constraints and trying to compete with Airbus pushed the FAA to defer to Boeing in certifying the MCAS system.
