The Government is OPEN, Jayme Closs Updates, and The World of Blind YouTube Jan 28, 2019
    Show notes

The government shutdown is over for now, but it is still unclear what the final outcome will be. President Trump walked away with nothing in terms of his border wall and now there is a 3 week time limit on whether it will happen again. Also developing over the weekend, Roger Stone gets indicted in the Mueller probe. Ginger Gibson, political reporter for Reuters, joins us for a breakdown of all the big political news.

Next, a quick update on the story of 13 year old Jayme Closs, who was held captive for 88 days by Jake Patterson. A lot was made of who would be getting reward money that was offered for anyone that had information that led to her rescue. Well since she saved herself when she escaped, she will be getting $25,000 of that reward money. My producer Miranda joins us for more.

Finally, there is a whole community of content creators on YouTube that are blind. While YouTube doesn’t seem like a natural fit for someone who is visually impaired, these creators have become voices for and often overlooked group of people who use the internet just as much as many others. Emma Grey Ellis, writer at Wired, joins us to discuss the blind YouTubers making the internet more accessible.

Continued Shutdown, Scam Callers, and Scam Festivals Jan 25, 2019
    Show notes

And the votes failed to re-open the government. The Senate voted on two proposals, one backed by Republicans and one backed by Democrats, but neither gained enough support. There are hopes however that now that we know what won’t pass, the two sides can come to a consensus on what will pass. Shannon Vavra, reporter for Axios, joins us for another failed bid to stop the longest government shutdown in history.

Next, as we continue to wallow in endless robocalls and spam calls, the nation’s four major wireless companies are trying to give you a heads up when a bad call is coming through. For T-Mobile users, suspicious calls now show up on your caller ID labeled as “Scam Likely.” Dalvin Brown, consumer tech reporter for USA Today, joins us for the continued fight to save you from robocalls.

Finally, a pair of documentaries about the failed Fyre Festival have been released on Hulu and Netflix. It was billed as a luxury music experience on Pablo Escobar’s former island complete with beautiful Instagram models, but it was all a fraud. Kate Talbot, contributor to Forbes, joins us for what the Fyre Festival documentaries reveal about Millennials and social media influencers.

Move Over Boring Phones, WEIRD Phones are Coming! Jan 24, 2019
    Show notes

The government shutdown continues, the President and Nancy Pelosi continue to fight about where the State of the Union address will be held next week, but let’s take a moment to talk about the president’s lawyer, former mayor Rudy Giuliani. Reports are that after a series of gaffes in what should have been a victory lap in light of the latest Buzzfeed News report, he has drawn the ire of Trump. Darren Samuelsohn, reporter for Politico, joins us for the latest internal drama.

Next, after falling to record lows, the supply of homes on the market is rising, the problem now is the affordability of those homes for the average American. Home builders have been faced with higher costs for land, labor and materials, but have also trended to making luxury homes and less starter homes. Diana Olick, real estate correspondent for CNBC, joins us to talk about the lack of affordable homes,

Finally, have smart phones become boring? Well get ready for a lot of weird phone tech this year. You will start seeing more about foldable screens, pop-up cameras, and even the possible return of the Motorola Razr with a foldable display. Show notes

2017 marked the beginning of the end for Toys R Us, 2018 was all about Sears, and now 2019 will be all about JC Penney and whether they can avoid the same fate as Sears. As companies struggle to keep up in the changing retail industry, Penney’s new CEO and her plan to save the company are getting some attention. Suzanne Kapner, reporter for the WSJ, joins us to discuss another former retail giant in trouble.

Next, as the government shutdown reaches its 33rd day, there will be a second round of checks with zeroes on it for federal workers affected by the shutdown. Considering that over three-quarters of all full-time workers are living paycheck to paycheck, what are the best and worst ways to borrow money during this time. Jessica Dickler, personal finance writer for CNBC, joins us for some advice on getting cash during the shutdown.

Finally, Oscar nominations finally came in and as usual, there were surprises and snubs. Netflix has changed the movie game and long fought for recognition, and now has claimed a best picture nomination with “Roma.” Black Panther, Spike Lee, and Bradley Cooper also made headlines. Jason Nathanson, ABC News entertainment correspondent joins us for an Oscars breakdown.

Marissa Fernandez, reporter for Axios, joins us to discuss the report.

Finally, there is a new four legged robot dog that thanks to artificial intelligence, can run faster, operate with more efficiency, and even get back up after its been kicked down. Amnesty and Fake News - Also, EXTREME Identity Theft Jan 21, 2019
    Show notes

In an effort to end the partial government shutdown that has been going on now for a month, President Trump offered a compromise deal which still included $5.7 B for the wall, but also included temporary protections for DACA recipients and extension of TPS, but the plan was a nonstarter with Democrats and many in conservative circles slammed the idea as amnesty for the wall. Ginger Gibson, Political reporter for Reuters, joins us to discuss this and also that huge report from Buzzfeed News that the Special Counsel has disputed.

Next, we will tell you the story of Michelle Hadley, Ian Diaz, her US Marshal ex-boyfriend and his wife Angela Diaz, who framed Michelle in a Craigslist 'rape fantasy' plot. It is a strange story with twists and turns that landed Michelle in jail for 3 months, until she was exonerated, but the damage to her life had already been done. Now Michelle Hadley is fighting back filing a lawsuit to reclaim her good name. Jessica Testa, reporter at Buzzfeed News, joins us to break down the story.
