Benjamin Oreskes, reporter for the LA Times, joins us to break down the latest numbers.

Stef Kight, reporter for Axios, joins us for the continued border surge.

Finally, the sport of boxing was turned on its head this past weekend as Andy Ruiz Jr. became the first Mexican Heavyweight Champion of the world. He was an 11-1 underdog when he beat Anthony Joshua. Jason Gay, sports columnist at the WSJ, joins us for the Andy Ruiz Jr., the humble heavyweight.

Sara Randazzo, legal reporter for the WSJ, joins us for what to know in CA, and then we explore what 25 cups of coffee might do to you.

Next, President Trump continues his tour of the U.K. and for the most part things seem to be going smoothly. Despite protests in the area, the president has successfully met with the Queen and had a joint press conference with outgoing Prime Minister Theresa May, where he praised her saying she deserves a lot of credit for her handling of Brexit. Daniel Lippman, reporter for Politico, joins us for Trump in London.

Finally, Amazon is ramping up its Prime one-day delivery saying it can deliver over 10 million products in one day. And to help with “choice overload” the company has a badge it places on one product per search called Amazon’s Choice to help you pick an item that is highly rated and ready to ship out, but how does Amazon choose its choices? Louise Matsakis, writer for Wired, joins us for the latest Amazon news.

    Show notes

More Americans are living solo and the companies that want their business are upending generations of family-focused products and marketing and catering to single person households with smaller appliances, individual packaging, and GIANT toilet-paper rolls. Ellen Byron, reporter for the WSJ joins us for how many people are living alone now and how they buy things differently.

Next, a new study is exposing the health risks of gene editing human embryos. It appears that the genetic variation that a Chinese scientist was trying to re-create when he edited twin girls’ DNA may be more harmful that helpful to their overall health. A study shows that people with this gene mutation were 21% less likely to live until the age of 76. Megan Molteni, who covers DNA technologies for Wired, joins us for the unintended consequences of gene editing.

Finally, when bills pile up, some young people are turning to strangers on Venmo to raise cash. While crowdfunding has been around for a while on platforms like GoFundMe, people are now just throwing out their mobile payment app handles and asking for money for a range of things: rent, medical expenses, family funerals and even small things like a cup of coffee or a trip to the nail salon. Suhauna Hussain, reporter for the LA Times, joins us for more.

The country has experienced another mass shooting and this time 12 people have lost their lives in Virginia Beach. DeWayne Craddock was a public utilities engineer who put in his two weeks’ notice earlier in the day before he indiscriminately shot at others in a municipal building. The investigation is still ongoing and no motive has been found. My producer Miranda joins us for what we know about this latest tragedy.

Deep Dive into Havana Syndrome May 31, 2019
    Show notes

Today we have a follow up to a story that started in November 2016. The mysterious “sonic attacks” on US and Canadian diplomats in Cuba. They reported heard loud screeches or buzzing sounds and then came down with dizziness, headaches, difficulty concentrating, and other symptoms resembling a traumatic brain injury. We never did find out what caused it and it may stay that way due to the way the US State department began the medical investigation, much of the early research may have been botched or biased. Dan Vergano, Buzzfeed News reporter joins us for the deep dive he did into what has become known as “Havana Syndrome.”

Next, another day, another political controversy. This time, the controversy involves emails to Navy and Air Force officials about the president’s Memorial Day weekend visit to Japan, and a request to keep the USS John McCain “out of sight” of President Trump. The president and acting defense secretary distanced themselves from the order, but it continued the long feud the president has with the late senator. My producer Miranda joins us to break it down.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller made his first public comments in two years since the beginning of the Russia investigation. In his remarks he recapped some of his findings and made two things clear, Russia did interfere in the election and his report does not exonerate the president from obstruction of justice…DOJ policy prohibits him from charging a sitting President. Zoe Tillman, legal reporter at Buzzfeed News joins us for what it all means.

Next, this past weekend another horse died at the Santa Anita race track bring the total to 26 since December. John Cherwa, horseracing reporter at the LA Times, joins us to discuss why so many horses are dying at Santa Anita.

Finally, do you know what your iPhone is up to in the middle of the night? Can a Company Be Held Liable For The Opioid Crisis? May 29, 2019
    Show notes

The first big trial in the opioid crisis has kicked off in Oklahoma and it will have wide ranging implications for hundreds of other lawsuits. The state will argue that Johnson and Johnson’s deceptive marketing campaign created a “public nuisance” that will cost the state $17 billion to take care of. Sara Randazzo, legal reporter for the WSJ, joins us for what it is all about, can a company be held responsible for the opioid crisis.

Next, a small preview of what we can expect as 2020 starts coming our way… fake videos and what big tech companies do to respond to them. Last week a video was circulated of Nancy Pelosi slurring her words and sounding drunk. Fact checkers soon deemed the video fake, but it took Facebook 32 hours to address the issue and didn’t even remove the video. Sara Fischer, media reporter at Axios, joins us to break down Facebook’s response to fake videos.

Finally, it’s time to start ditching those chore charts and start embracing allowance tracking apps. Kids still want money from the bank of mom and dad, and parents still want to impart a basic work ethic, but lists of chores on the fridge and saving in a piggy bank doesn’t cut it with the smartphone generation. Julie Jargon, family and tech correspondent with the WSJ, joins us for how kids’ allowance works in the smartphone age.

Ginger Gibson, political reporter for Reuters, joins us for a 2020 update including how Dems plan on paying for all their proposals.

Next, similar to a “Do Not Call” registry, momentum is growing for a “Do Not Track” registry. A bill was just introduced by Sen. Josh Hawley which would legally require companies to stop collecting data on users who opt out of certain kinds of “non-essential “tracking. Emily Birnbaum, tech policy reporter at The Hill, joins us for the effort to limit the collection of your data.

Finally, as more households are installing smart doorbells, some are using them as nature cameras, checking the video all day long and obsessing over the wildlife at their doors. Some are even checking these doorbell streams about 30 times in a day saying it’s better that TV or social media. Sarah Needleman, tech reporter at the WSJ, joins us for the new nature cams.
