    Show notes

It all kicks off tonight in Miami! The battle for the Democratic nomination for president and hope for the party to defeat President Trump. The first debate of the season will feature 20 candidates across two days, with 4 of the top 5 candidates going at it on night 2, but some Democratic bigwigs are scared of what might happen if it turns into a slugfest. Holly Otterbein, national political reporter for Politico, joins us for a debate preview.

Next, after an uproar over migrant children being held in filthy conditions at a border patrol facility in Clint, Texas, John Sanders, the acting head of Customs and Border Protection, has resigned. This leaves another critical post without a permanent leader while many issues continue to pop up at the border. Alicia Caldwell, immigration reporter at the WSJ, joins us for this and where we are with the $4.5 billion border aid bill.

Finally, last week we were bombarded with news of the latest way our phones are damaging our bodies. Horns were growing out of young people’s skulls. Because we learn forward to look at our screens, bone spurs were developing on the back of people’s heads. But the research didn’t really support that and there was a possible conflict of interest with one of the researchers. Eleanor Cummins, assistant editor at Popular Science, joins us for why we all need to calm down.

    Show notes

After the president announced that there would be mass deportations coming over the weekend, he decided to delay planned immigration raids for two weeks to give Democrats time to change asylum laws. This comes as we find out that the government has had to move almost 300 migrant children from a remote border patrol station in Texas due to poor conditions. Alicia Caldwell, immigration reporter for the WSJ, joins us for the latest immigration news.

Next, as tensions have been running high since Iran shot down an unmanned American drone, President Trump is leveling new sanctions against Iranian leaders. President Trump had previously called off a military strike and thought that this was a more proportionate response. Bryan Bender, Defense editor for Politico, joins us for what to expect from these sanctions and how we got here.

Finally, there has been another fight that has gone viral. This one included parents and coaches at a youth baseball game in Lakewood Colorado. The players were all seven years old, and the parents were upset with a call made by the umpire, who is 13. Six adults have been cited in this fight so far. Jason Gay, sports columnist for the WSJ joins us to talk about why parents get so angry.

Politics Roundup and RIP Jibo the Robot Jun 24, 2019
    Show notes

Let’s check in on the world of presidential politics. As we await the first round of debates for the Democratic field to begin this week, the gloves have come off in the battle for the nomination. Former Vice President Joe Biden still leads the field in all the poll and he continues to take hits all around. On the other side, President Trump has said he may not reach out to swing voters instead focusing on turning out his base to win him re-election. Ginger Gibson, political reporter for Reuters, joins us to break it all down.

Next, we’re going to tell you the story of a little robot named Jibo. People welcomed this social robot into their families, and now they are mourning its death. Jibo launched on Indiegogo but its history traces back to labs at MIT. It was part smart assistant like Alexa, but had a cute little body that could twist and turn and because of facial recognition it would always welcome you when you walked into the room. But now, the servers will be turned off soon and the robot just won’t be the same anymore. Ashley Carman, host of the “Why'd You Push That Button?” Podcast, joins us for how Jibo made emotional connections with its users.

President Trump warned that Iran “made a very big mistake” after the Iranian Revolutionary Guard shot down and American RQ-4A Global Hawk surveillance drone. Iran maintains that the drone crossed their airspace, but the US says that is just not true. Bryan Bender, defense editor at Politico, joins us for more on the drone shoot down and continued tension with Iran.

Next, in the aftermath of the shootings in Parkland last year, prosecutors around the country turned to a zero tolerance policy when it came to students who made threats against a school. This even prompted one prosecutor in Texas, to charge 216 students in 3 months. But now, some are moving away from that because they want to avoid overcharging students in cases that don’t turn out to be serious. Dan Frosch, Reporter for the WSJ, joins us for how priorities are changing.

Finally, we speak to Sarah Zhang, writer at the Atlantic, about the sperm donor who has met 17 of his kids. Tim Gullicksen began donating sperm in 1989 and most of his kids are 18-25 years old now. They found him and other siblings through the Donor Sibling Registry and DNA tests like 23andMe.
