Who Are The People Who Pay to Have People Killed? Jun 14, 2019
    Show notes

Today we are talking about the people who pay people to kill people. We are getting more details that the attempted murder on “Big Papi” David Ortiz’s life was a hit job, in New York a police officer hired a hitman to kill her husband and a young girl. Thankfully most of the headlines we see are about contract killings that go nowhere. For more, we speak to journalist Rene Chun about why more often than not, these hit jobs don’t succeed.

Next, WH Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sander is leaving her post at the end of the month. Sanders is returning to her home state of Arkansas where the president hopes that she runs for Governor. Daniel Lippman, reporter for Politico, joins us for how Sanders changed the game getting rid of daily press briefings and the President’s latest comments on accepting opposition research from foreign entities and not contacting the FBI.

Finally, you see them everywhere… people walking around with AirPods in their ears. People have full on conversations wearing them and it can lead to some awkward social interactions where you don’t know if the music is turned down or if the other person is even paying attention. But is there a case to be made for wearing them all the time? Marina Koren, science reporter at the Atlantic, joins us for one good reason, it can help some safely ignore street harassers.

First Sentencing Handed Down in Operation Varsity Blues Jun 13, 2019
    Show notes

Former Stanford University sailing coach John Vandemoer is the first person to be sentenced in the college admissions cheating scandal: Operation Varsity Blues. He was sentenced to one day in prison, six months of home detention, two years of supervised release, and a $10,000 fine. My producer Miranda joins us to break it down and the thing that worked in his favor, he never pocketed the money, but sent it all back to the sailing program.

Next, nearly 1,400 people had died in Congo from an Ebola outbreak that has lasted nearly a year, and now the contagious disease has spread to Uganda. A 5 year old boy crossed the border with his family and later died. The Ebola problems have persisted in Congo as a result of community distrust and armed rebel groups threatening violence against health workers. Andrew Freedman, science editor at Axios, joins us for more on the Ebola outbreak.

Finally, at first it looked like a simple domestic murder, but then police learned about the alien reptilian cult. Steve Mineo was shot by his girlfriend Barbara Rogers who had been accused of being a “Vampire Witch Reptilian Super Soldier.” She has now been found guilty of third-degree murder. Kyle Swenson, reporter for the Washington Post, joins us for the bizarre backstory of this extraterrestrial cult that swallowed them both up.

Chemical Castration in Alabama Jun 12, 2019
    Show notes

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey has signed a bill that would require people convicted of certain sex offenses to undergo “chemical castration” as a condition of parole, a requirement meant to keep them from committing similar crimes. The process is not permanent and can be reversed but there are ethical questions and concerns if it actually works as a deterrent. Marisa Iati, reporter for the Washington Post, joins us for more.

Next, there has been a rise of unproven billion-dollar health care industries and the FDA is attempting to get them under control. The FDA just won a ruling that will stop stem cell treatments at a Florida clinic after some patients went blind after being injected with extract made from their own fat. Caitlin Owens, reporter for Axios, joins us for more on this ruling and also where the FDA plans on getting involved next, the booming CBD industry.

Finally, do you really need “Dark mode?” It is the big tech trend right now and Apple just announced its coming to its new iOS 13. It is being praised as a way to reduce the strain on your eyes and make you more productive, but is it all it’s made out to be? Based on existing studies, it’s not, but it sure does look cool and it isn’t as bad as the blue light coming from your white screens. Arielle Pardes, senior associate editor at Wired, joins us for the popularity of Dark mode.

Gruesome Abuse at One of the Largest Dairy Farms in the Country Jun 11, 2019
    Show notes

There is an animal cruelty controversy that is striking the largest dairy producer in Indiana and one of the largest in the country. Video released by a group called Animal Recovery Mission showed cases of abuse and cruelty in the treatment of calves at Fair Oaks Farms. There was also drug use by some employees caught on camera. On one side of the issue is Richard Cuoto, founder of ARM who has been called the Batman of animal cruelty and on the other side, Mike McCloskey, founder of Fair Oaks Farms who runs Fair Oaks’ Dairy Adventure which some have called the Disneyland of agricultural tourism. Sarah Bowman, environmental reporter at the Indianapolis Star, joins us to break down this story.

Next, we now have two cities on the books with laws decriminalizing magic mushrooms, Denver and Oakland. There is an important distinction however, these laws just make it a lower priority for law enforcement, you can grow them and possess them, just not sell them. However, some lawmakers see it going the way of cannabis into legalization. Matt Simon, science writer at Wired, joins us to talk about the journey to decriminalize psilocybin, also known as magic mushrooms.

Politics Roundup and the Future of MDMA Jun 10, 2019
    Show notes

New tariffs have been avoided. Mexico has agreed to take stronger measures to slow migration over the border and President Trump has dropped the threat of tariffs for now. Joe Biden had a rough week reversing his long held position on the Hyde Amendment which some say was a purely political shift to get on board with an issue important for the Democratic Party. House Democrats are also scheduling a series of hearings this week on the Special Counsel’s report. Ginger Gibson, political reporter for Reuters joins us to break it all down.

Next, the party drug MDMA is getting more attention as clinical studies are being done to see if psychiatrists can harness the therapeutic power of the drug to help patients with PTSD. Part of what helps the process is that MDMA can strengthen the bond between therapist and patient by enhancing feelings of trust, emotional openness, and empathy. It acts as sort of a psychological accelerant making changes in the brain that lay the groundwork for recovery. Liza Gross, contributor to the Verge, joins us for a look into how MDMA could possibly transform psychiatry.

We Warned You - Walmart's Robot Army Has Arrived Jun 07, 2019
    Show notes

It was back in April that Walmart announced it was doubling down on robots in its stores to scan shelves and scrub floors hoping to keep labor costs down and open up employees to more fulfilling work. Well, the roll-out has happened and the results are… mixed. The human workers are sometimes the ones that feel like machines. Customers have reportedly fallen asleep on one of the machines, workers have to retrain the machines in some cases, and engineers have had to figure out creative ways to have robots announce themselves to customers so they aren’t caught off guard. Drew Harwell, AI reporter for the Washington Post, joins us for how the robots are doing at Walmart.

Next, YouTube has stepped into the hate speech minefield. Earlier this week they announced three changes aimed at limiting the posting and spreading of hate speech content. Unfortunately for YouTube, the long planned announcement came during an uproar over enforcement of its policies surrounding conservative host Steven Crowder and homophobic and racist insults he made against Vox’s Carlos Maza. Ina Fried, chief tech correspondent at Axios, joins us for YouTube’s new policies.
