Two Mass Shootings in Less Than 24 Hours Shock the Country Aug 05, 2019
    Show notes

Tragedy strikes again as two mass shootings at crowded public places in Texas and Ohio have claimed the lives of at least 29 people and injured dozens of others, and it all happened within 24 hours of each other. In Ohio, one of the victims was the shooter’s sister and in El Paso, we have a manifesto posted online that spoke of a “Hispanic invasion of Texas.” That case is now being treated as domestic terrorism. Ginger Gibson, reporter for Reuters, joins us for another mass shooting two weeks in a row.

Next, the Boeing 737 Max grounding could stretch into 2020 and we are finding out that there were red flags after the first crash about the possibility that another one could happen within months. Unfortunately that’s exactly what happened. An internal risk analysis done by the FAA suggested that a warning to pilots would be enough to provide Boeing with 10 months to implement a fix. Andrew Tangel, reporter for the WSJ, joins us for more.

Finally, a hidden epidemic of chronic disease might threaten cocaine and meth users in the coming years because of increasing signs of dangerous adulterants in illicit drugs. Aside from the negative health effects of drug use, toxic lab-made adulterants are becoming more common. Dan Vergano, science reporter at BuzzFeed News, joins us for what to watch out for.

A$AP Rocky on Trial in Sweden Aug 02, 2019
    Show notes

The A$AP Rocky trial is underway in Sweden and the rapper testified about an altercation he had with two men in Stockholm. A$AP claims that he feared for his safety when two young men were following him and fought with his bodyguard. One of the issues is whether a bottle was used to beat up one of the men. Christina Anderson is in Sweden covering the trial, she joins us for what happened and this added twist… President Trump has sent a special envoy to sit in at the trial.

Next, a new congressional report is shedding more light on all the awful crimes that were committed by Olympic gymnastics doctor, Larry Nassar. The new report says that the FBI, USA Gymnastics, and more, all knew about the allegations of Nassar’s abuse of athletes, but hid the extent of his crimes from the public and the athletic community. Brianna Sacks, BuzzFeed News reporter, joins us for more.

Finally, at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, a baby southern white rhino was just born and the program that helped bring him into the world could help save the nearly extinct northern white rhino. Scientists want to use frozen eggs and sperm from a dead northern white rhino and implant it into a surrogate mother to hopefully repopulate them. Brad Fikes, reporter at the San Diego Union Tribune, joins us for this ambitious project to save the northern white rhino.

Debate Night 2: Attacks All Around for Biden and Harris Aug 01, 2019
    Show notes

Night 2 of the Democratic debates and the front-runner Joe Biden was taking hits from all around on healthcare, immigration, and criminal justice reform. He handled himself better than last time, but did not get out unscathed. Sen. Kamala Harris also took a lot of heat from other candidates and was put on defense many times throughout. Sen. Cory Booker might have won the most improved candidate award. He needed a breakout moment and had a few good exchanges with Biden. Julia Manchester, campaign reporter at The Hill, joins us for a breakdown of night 2.

Next, after news came to light about Operation Varsity Blues, the college admission cheating scandal, a national conversation occurred about unfairness in the admissions process. Now a new financial aid loophole is facing scrutiny by the Education Dept. They are looking into a tactic used by wealthy parents in the suburbs of Chicago where they transfer the legal guardianship of their college bound children so they can more easily claim financial aid. Doug Belkin, reporter for the WSJ, joins us for how it all works.

Progressive/Moderate Divide Front and Center at Democratic Debate Jul 31, 2019
    Show notes

The first night of the second round of Democratic debates focused highly on the divide between the moderates and progressives… are candidates like Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren too far to the left and promising too much to win against Donald Trump. The conversation spread into many of the top issues for Democrats… healthcare, immigration, and the economy. Julia Manchester, campaign reporter at the Hill joins us to discuss night 1.

Next, one of the country’s biggest credit card issuers, Capital One, has been hit by a data breach which has compromised the personal information of over 100 million people. The thing that makes this breach different than others, is that it was the work of one hacker named Paige Thompson, rather than an outside group with nation-state connections. Kate Fazzani, cyber security reporter at CNBC, joins us for how all this information was stolen.

Finally, 3M has invented a new way to ship products that could do away with having to use cardboard boxes and tape on small deliveries. Their new Flex & Seal Shipping Roll, can be cut to size and uses an adhesive inner layer that only sticks to itself and not the object inside. Katharine Schwab, reporter at Fast Company, joins us for this new product that could help small businesses.

What We Know About the Gilroy Garlic Festival Shooting Jul 30, 2019
    Show notes

Another mass shooting has happened in the country, this time in northern California at the Gilroy Garlic Festival. 19- year old Santino William Legan opened fire at the festival killing 3 and injuring at least 12 others. Police were on the scene quickly exchanging fire with the gunman and killed him. It was all over in about a minute. Barry Holtzclaw, managing editor at the Gilroy Dispatch joins us for what we know.

Next, while we want to know everything we can about why these tragedies happen, it is important not to lose sight of the victims. While many were injured, the three deaths are heartbreaking because of how young the victims were. They are 6-year old Stephen Romero, 13-year old Keyla Salazar, and 25- year old Trevor Irby. My producer Brooke Peterson joins us for more.

Finally, another shakeup in the Trump administration as the Director of National Intelligence, Dan Coats, is resigning. Texas Representative John Ratcliffe has been tapped to take over the post. Ratcliffe is a fierce defender of the president and attracted attention for his stern questioning of Robert Mueller. Morgan Chalfant, national security reporter at The Hill, joins us for who John Ratcliffe is.

Neuroscientist Wants to Turn Son into Cyborg Jul 29, 2019
    Show notes

First off today an interesting conversation with Vivienne Ming, a theoretical neuroscientist, AI expert, and professional mad scientist about using technology to augment human sight, hearing, memory, and emotions. In particular, she wants to use tech to turn her son who is diagnosed with autism into a cyborg of sorts with superpowers. Giving him the ability to read and recognize emotions in other people, or enhancing working memory would be a huge benefit to Vivienne’s son, but does it give him an unfair advantage? Does tech that boosts human potential change what it means to be human? Vivienne joins us for what happens when we all want to be superhuman.

Next, President Trump has been handed a huge victory for his immigration agenda and building a wall on the southern border. The Supreme Court has cleared the way for $2.5 billion in military funding to be used for border wall construction. Ginger Gibson, political reporter for Reuters, joins us for this and the latest problem for President Trump. He’s fighting back accusations of racism once again after lashing out on Twitter against Rep. Elijah Cummings.
