Federal Executions Set to Resume Jul 26, 2019
    Show notes

Executions to resume. The Department of Justice has announced that it will resume capital punishment for the first time in nearly two decades. Unlike many states that were having issues with a 3-drug protocol, federal authorities will use a single drug, pentobarbital. Five death row inmates have scheduled executions starting at the end of this year. Jaqueline Thomsen, reporter at The Hill, joins us for more.

Next, Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rosselló has announced that he will be resigning next week on August 2. This comes after more than 2 weeks of protests over corruption and mismanagement and the release of vulgar text messages between Rosselló and his inner circle. Andrew Scurria, reporter for the WSJ, joins us for this and how the incoming Governor Wanda Vasquez is already getting calls to resign before she even starts.

Finally, a mysterious occurrence has happened as accused sex trafficker and pedophile Jeffrey Epstein was found in his jail cell semi-conscious and with apparent bruising on his neck. Conflicting reports say it could have been a suicide attempt or a ploy to get a transfer to another facility. Harry Siegel, journalist at the Daily Beast, joins us for what we know.

Was Mueller Day a Dud? Jul 25, 2019
    Show notes

Mueller Day came and went and it wasn’t the big spectacle that Democrats had hoped for and President Trump had feared. In back to back sessions, Special Counsel Robert Mueller declined to answer questions, appeared confused with certain lines of questioning, and really didn’t seem to move the needle of public opinion. Ginger Gibson, political reporter for Reuters, joins us for how the Mueller testimony went.

Next, the small city of Emeryville, California has the nation’s highest minimum wage at $16.30 and is ground zero for a national debate over how to balance raising the wages of the lowest paid workers, but also making sure that small businesses can keep up, especially restaurants which have been hit hardest as they struggle to avoid raising menu prices. Jim Carlton, reporter for the WSJ, joins us for this minimum wage fight.

Finally, the nation’s biggest on-demand food delivery app, DoorDash, is dropping their current tipping policy which came under scrutiny when customers realized that their tips were being used to meet a minimum payment for a driver rather than what a tip should be, adding to the drivers income. We spoke to Kia Kokalitcheva, tech reporter for Axios, for how the old policy worked, and then I share with you how the CEO of DoorDash has reacted.

    Show notes

One of Britain’s most famous and controversial politicians, Boris Johnson, has become the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. His first big task will be to make good on his Brexit promise to lead the country out of European Union. Annabelle Timsit, reporter at Quartz and who is based in London, joins us for all the reaction to the new prime minister.

Next, Sammy, the one-winged bald eagle has been birdnapped. The 35 year old bird has been living a good life at the Quogue Wildlife Refuge on Long Island since 1988 when he was shot and had to get his right wing amputated. Now, someone has broken into his cage and taken him. Marisa Nelson, assistant director of the Quogue Wildlife Refuge, joins us to share Sammy’s story and call for his return.

Finally, we take a look at what makes ADX Florence the country’s most secure prison. It is all a matter of design. Holding a who’s who of bad guys and now the infamous El Chapo, the Alcatraz of the Rockies is literally built into the side of a mountain. Soundproof cells are made of concrete from top to bottom and only has a disorienting 4-inch wide window to the outside world. Eleanor Cummins, assistant editor at Popular Science, joins us for a look at ADX Florence.

    Show notes

Hundreds of thousands of Puerto Ricans filled the streets to protest and demand the resignation of Governor Ricardo Rossello. In a scandal called “RickyLeaks,” over 800 pages of online chats we released where Rossello and others in his inner circle made sexist and homophobic comments and even mocked victims of Hurricane Maria. Ursula Perano, reporter for Axios, joins us for the political crisis in Puerto Rico.

Next, we are currently building the Giant Magellan, the world’s largest telescope. It is being constructed under the football stadium at the University of Arizona, is made from a special glass shipped from Japan, and the resolution will be 10 times greater than the Hubble Space Telescope. Jared Males, astronomer at the University of Arizona, joins us to talk about Giant Magellan and what we hope to discover once it is up and running.

Finally, if Florida is in trouble, then we might all be. The state is feeling the squeeze of environmental change on its beaches, farms, wetlands, and cities and can serve as a preview of what our climate change future may look like. Corinne Iozzio, executive editor at Popular Science, joins us for their special report, The Florida Problem.

While this was a huge achievement, there was some uncertainty the landing would happen because of an error code that triggered an alarm and some worry.
