Green Friday: Bernie's Green New Deal and Cannabis Restaurants Aug 23, 2019
    Show notes

It’s a Green Friday this week on the podcast! First, Sen. Bernie Sanders has unveiled his Green New Deal to fight climate change and it’s coming in at a whopping $16.3 trillion. It declares climate change a national emergency, transforms the country’s energy system to rely on renewable energy for electricity and transportation by 2030 and complete decarbonization by 2050. Miranda Green, energy and environment reporter at The Hill, joins us for what’s in the plan

Next, cannabis restaurants are coming to California and if things go well, this could be a model you start seeing in other states. The soon-to-open Lowell Farms Cannabis Cafe will be pairing a farm-to-table meal with “flower service” so you can pair your meal with the perfect strain. Even though the state has legalized recreational marijuana, running a cannabis restaurant is nothing like running a typical restaurant and there are a lot more regulations to follow. Maura Judkis, reporter for the Washington Post, joins us for some of the creative ways this will all work.

    Show notes

Texas is the latest state to be hit with a cyberattack. Officials have confirmed that 22 municipalities were infiltrated by hackers. A mayor of one of the cities said that hackers were asking for $2.5 million in ransom to unlock files. Bobby Allyn, reporter for NPR, joins us for what we know about these cyberattacks that are increasingly targeting state and local governments.

Next, President has decided to call off a state trip to Denmark after being told that Greenland is not for sale by the prime minister. The prime minister of Denmark called the idea “absurd” and President Trump countered by saying that her statement was “nasty.” Marisa Fernandez, reporter for Axios, joins us to breakdown the latest.

Finally, scientists are finding out more about how big earthquakes get started… often times with many smaller foreshocks. Sometimes days or even weeks before most 4.0 and above earthquakes occur, scientists have found smaller quakes preceding it. Thanks to advanced computing techniques we are learning more and it could help earthquake forecasting in the future. Daniel Trugman, seismologist at Los Alamos National Laboratory, joins us for what we know.

Spending More for Faster Internet Might Not Be Worth It Aug 21, 2019
    Show notes

Americans are spending more money on faster internet speeds on the promise of faster load times and higher quality streaming, but is it really worth it? Recent tests by the WSJ show that a typical household doesn’t use most of their bandwidth while streaming and only get marginal gains from upgrading your speed. Shalini Ramachandran, reporter for the WSJ joins us for why upgrading your bandwidth might not be the best choice.

Next, after so many recent mass shootings, the business of everyday ballistic gear is booming. Companies are selling bulletproof backpacks, clipboards, and more. The key demographic for these products are parents with kids. But how effective are these products in protecting your kids from gunfire? Abha Bhattarai, national retail reporter for the Washington Post, joins us for more.

Finally, Facebook is making good on its promise to let you see all of the info they have collected about you from other websites. The new tool called, Off-Facebook Activity, will let you see what they know about you from your browsing history and give you the option of clearing it, but not deleting it completely. Ryan Mac, senior tech reporter at BuzzFeed News, joins us for what this new tool is all about.

    Show notes

After 5 years of investigations and protests, New York City Police Commissioner James O’Neil fired Daniel Pantaleo who was the officer involved in the 2014 chokehold death of Eric Garner. O’Neil said that using the banned chokehold was a mistake that any officer could have made in the heat of an arrest, but he can no longer effectively serve as a NY City police officer. My producer Victor Wright joins us for more.

Next, we speak to Joe Barnett, managing editor of Budget and Tax News, for a look into red-light cameras in the country. While people should not running red-lights, are these cameras increasing safety and causing fewer accidents. The results are mixed, some evidence suggests that increasing the time of the yellow light may be more helpful and enforcement of red-light citations is not always the easiest.

Finally, in recent years more young adults are continuing to see their pediatricians well into their mid-20’s. People are on their parents insurance longer and feel more comfortable seeing the same doctor they have known since they were kids, but how long can you sit in that Candy Land waiting room geared toward toddlers? Caren Chesler, contributor to the Washington Post joins us for when it’s time to look for another doctor.

Joe Biden also continues his campaign of vowing to cooperate with Republicans and Elizabeth Warren is surging in the polls. Ginger Gibson, political reporter for Reuters, joins us to break it all down.

Next, kids aren’t playing enough sports. The cost of youth sports has skyrocketed, parents complain of bad coaches, and kids just aren’t having fun. The average kid today spends less than three years playing a sport and quits by age 11. Kendall Baker, sports editor at Axios, joins us for why kids aren’t sticking with youth sports.

Finally, the latest baby monitors promise a bevy of new ways to watch your child while they sleep, but sometimes they can add more fear and anxiety. Some parents are catching ghostly images next to their babies at night and are struggling to explain them. One motion detecting monitor caught human-like figures floating around a crib. Julie Jargon, family and tech columnist at the WSJ, joins us for more.

We are also learning that the two guards assigned to monitor him fell asleep and falsified records. My producer Victor Wright joins us for more.

Finally, there have been a lot of worries of a coming recession for the United States, but what is also adding to the concern is a synchronized global slump. Nine key economies are also already in a recession or on the verge of one. For now U.S. consumers are holding up much of the global economy, but things can change very quickly.
