EPISODE #38 Adventures of an Independent Musician Jan 07, 2018
Show notes Download Bio of the Artist This guitar-centric rock band arose from many successive weeks of Friday night jams at the "Stone Manor", former home of Susan and Tom Smith. It was suggested that the group could go out and blow minds as they were: a 3-piece band. Susan's dependable rock-steady bass proved to be the ideal platform for Tom's guitar style - described variously as "go-for-the-throat", "incendiary" and, of course, "too loud". Susan and Terry are old-school East Tennesseans, (Terry has been a well-loved musician and composer of local renown for decades) while Tom arrived in Knoxville via Johnson City TN, via Asheville, NC; via Los Angeles, CA; via Cincinnati, OH; via Memphis, TN; via Las Vegas, NV; via Brooklyn, NY. He thus far has neutralized all relocation threats. The Merry Jaynz currently reside in Knoxville, Tennessee. What does one hear when The Merry Jaynz is all up in it? A deep, pulsing bass line - as predictable as the tides - which earns and keeps its place in the pit of your stomach, setting up a hypnotic vibe with the drumbeat. Variation and organic song evolution are what keeps the energy at a remarkable high. Rather than the soloist improvising during a solo on top of a tried-and-true arrangement, one can find the whole band improvising a way-out take on one of their original numbers or taking a cover tune to unexpected places it has never been. Tom uses what could be called a guitar vocabulary to hit a musical space that matches what is going on in the rhythm section. What sounds like a reggae drum beat over a bluegrass bass line might just elicit a surf punk guitar treatment...this time. Next time? Country licks or rock-a-billy bustle. The band plays to the space they are in. The Merry Jaynz invented the musical genre "Underground Swamp Rock" and has two CD releases under their belt and a thriving online community supporting them. They are setting their sights on a larger sphere of influence, more media channels and more exposure to folks who like their rock Jammy, Organic, Face-Melty and Ever-Changing. What He shares on this episode: A great part of what people want to hear is something that engages them in a way that other music doesn’t. Audiences want artists to share part of themselves, something authentic rather than something put on. Favor must be earned and not curried. On this episode Tom share how he believes in the healing properties of music and intend to stoke the inherent healing energies within all their listeners. On this episode:
    • How he started his career as a touring musician
    • How he tripled his revenue
    • A story about an unexpected request from the audience
    • An awkward moment on tour
    • Most valuable lessons he gathered as a musician
    • How he made his project and his crwodfunding campaign
    Key takeaways:
    • Respect the audience; they are a big part of the show
    • Do whatever you can even if you don’t know the song the audience requests
    • How to improvise and interact with the audience
    • Be prepared
    • Study the songs, memorize the chords and the lyrics

    Bio of the artist

Born in Switzerland, sultry and fiery pop songstress Mané weaves songs of love, loss, strength and self- empowerment with a mysterious edge and vulnerability. After putting out her single “All I Need” last January, Mané is now releasing her first EP “Before The Storm.” With this 5 track CD produced by SashaF in London, and Yaacov Salah and Meïr Salah from Meya Music (Slimane, Marina Kaye) in Paris, Mané takes us on a journey with a pop sound influenced by artists like Sia, Demi Lovato or Marina Kaye. In 2017, Mané went on a European tour with shows in cities such as Liverpool, Berlin, Amsterdam and Paris.

What she shares on this episode

    Bio of the artist

Karen was born and educated in the U.S., with a break of one year during high school, as an exchange student in France. She loves many things and had been playing the piano up till the end of university, finishing with a Master of Music degree in Viola da Gamba at New England Conservatory, and professional performance for several years. After that she moved to Switzerland where she studied with Jordi Savall.. She also teaches different approaches to learning English, music and music pedagogy. She has trained in the F.M. Alexander Technique and of course the MDH Breathing Coordination.

What she shares on this episode

The “hourglass.” Often when we want to break into something new we are just not familiar enough with the existing culture of that field to know how and what to do. We need to find certain universal constants because things are ever changing, and when they change our personal premeditated road maps need to apply. There are two universal constants as Karen describes them. They are like two halves of the hourglass. It might not seem so, but they need to go together. An hourglass has highly specific form and function – it is a two-part communicative form. One half, awareness of the rules of the game and the second half is the awareness of defining yourself. The more you turn them over they mix a little more. At one point you simultaneously realise that you are aware of all the rules and able to be true to yourself. Awareness of these two different aspects when you’re trying to break into a field is really important and If you find a discrepancy you need to get out of there. The idea being, the more comfortable you become the greater are your chances at succeeding.

In this episode of the Creator Mindset Podcast
    • The metaphor of the hourglass and what it refers to.
    • The rules of the game
    • Defining yourself to yourself
    • Ongoing personal projects
    Key takeaways
    • Make a clear distinction in your mind what the explicit and implicit rules of the game are.
    • Speak to people, make observations and inform yourself as much as you can on the implicit rules.
    • Take notes and organize.
    • Know yourself and be able to express it
    • Make a list (even if its fantastical) of what you can do and what you want to do in the near future
    • Be in charge of your own experience. Allow yourself to lucidly see what you can offer and what your values are.
    • Check If you have the necessary skills required to match your list.
    • Study your list carefully
    • Try and see if you are able to describe the things on your list as best as you can
    • Find common denominators (Where are you always present with the same idea)
    • Give it a name (it could be a product, concept, service) – it’s usually central to who you
    • Go through the process as many times as you have to as you evolve.

What she shares on this episode

As artists and particularly musicians we are focussed on the musical element of our performance alone. I mean, how often have you stood in front of a mirror or videotaped yourself singing or performing before you actually went up on stage to perform? This process can be really intimidating and scary for most of us, to see ourselves through the worlds eyes. This could mean different things to different people, insecurity about our ability, our looks, our talent and the list goes on. There is hope, Denosh has worked with artists, enabling them to address this area. Her only advice? Practice. That’s right, Practice. When are prepared for what’s to come and we have seen ourselves the way that our audience is going to see us, there really is nothing else holding us back from being excellent performers. Allow yourself to be moulded and to go through that process with courage and humility being true to yourself. On this episode Denosh talks about some measures that you can take as an artist to be in control of and own your performance every single time you put yourself out there.

    • Success differs from person to person
    • Your performance is all that you have at the end of the day
    • Invest in your craft. Spend time performing, small or big, all the same.
    • The more experience you get performing, the better you’ll get at it.
