Top 10 Last 10: Goodbye 2023 Edition Dec 22, 2023

Show notes

Countdown #453 It's Top 10 Last 10 time, as the boys look back on the latter parts of 2023 and mini-review 10 films each that are first time watches, but otherwise have no linking criterion. Of course, this is The Countdown, so: - said films are ranked from worst to best - Wayne says inappropriate things - Paul Soundboards it up in response to said inappropriate things, while honouring the late, great Andre Braugher; and - there is more French musketeer action than you can poke a sword at. (To be fair this one is not a usual staple of the show, but worth pointing out nonetheless.) In other words, jump on board for a guide on what to watch and avoid this festive season, as The Countdown continues .... Oh and Merry Christmas, you filthy animals (to those who celebrate). Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget review Dec 19, 2023

Show notes

Do you remember that film about a bunch of stop motion chickens pulling off a Great Escape-ish escape from the chicken farm where they'll all eventually become dinner? Well, Netflix certainly does, and they've invested in bringing the sequel to your television screens some 23 years later.

Paul and Wayne have checked it out and at least one of them is not chicken in voicing their disdain for the film. In fact, the Negatron theme gets trotted out amid many swipes at animated children's film in general, though all should be relieved to know there is not one reference to breasts - chicken or otherwise - in this review. Who will be the hard to please reviewer and who will attempt to defend the chickens as they Mission Impossible their way into our hearts? Find out as The Coundown continues ... Top 10 Music Duos Dec 15, 2023

Show notes

Countdown #452

The music is back on The Countdown as the guys this week debate their favourite music duos! How upset with Paul's list will Wayne be? How many classic duos can Paul overlook? And at the end of the day, which comedy duo will be very, very upset that they were left out?

Learn the answers to all these questions and more as the boys' music tastes are once again question - even as The Countdown continues ...

Leave the World Behind review Dec 12, 2023

Show notes

It's December and the releases to theatre has slowed up (a least for a week), so Paul and Wayne have turned to Netflix for new content, and were pleased to find the hardly advertised "Leave the World Behind" waiting to be reviewed. Julia Roberts joins the suavest actor there is , Mahershala Ali, and Ethan Hawke, to bring this apocalyptic thriller helmed by the Mr Robot guy and based on some very short novel no-one had ever heard of before, to your couches as organised by the stellar people at Netlfix. Will this one make more or less of an impact than Don't Look Up? Find out as The Countdown continues .... Top 10 Films That Would Not Get Made Today Dec 08, 2023

Show notes

Countdown #451

Is this the episode that ends the show? That's what regular listeners might be asking as Paul flies very close to the sun by letting Wayne off the podcast leash to discuss the Top 10 Films That Would Not Get Made Today! Truly, this one is worth listening to just to hear Wayne's description of his Number 7 - a film which Paul simply cannot believe exists (even if it was made back in the '50s).

And beyond that, there's plenty of the usual banter, questionable jokes, and cameos from The Soundboard to prove the boys are back in the same room and all is again fine in the world.

Silent Night (2023) review Dec 05, 2023

Show notes

John Woo explodes back into the cinemas of the western world with Silent Night - a revenge action thriller which, somehow, neither Paul nor Wayne realised was dialogue-less until some 20 minutes into the movie.

Being big fans of the Woo and with a kick-ass and bloodthirsty trailer, the boys were all kinds of excited about an action Christmas movie following in the foot-steps of Die Hard and last year's Violent Night. But did Silent Night fill their stockings with the Woo-laden goodies? Or was one of the hosts very Grinchian about his experience of this film? Learn the answers to these questions and more, as The Countdown continues ... Time Stamps: Silent Night NON-SPOILER Review: 0:00 - 10:04 Silent Night SPOILER-FILLED Discussion: 10:04 - 22:09

MCU Phase 4 Ranked! Dec 01, 2023

Show notes

Countdown #450

It's the 450th Countdown this week, and the boys are celebrating by taking aim at Marvel's Phase 4 and ranking all the films and television shows from it. Or at least Paul is. Wayne continues to defend most forms of mediocrity. Though at least some of that may be attributable to him being late low with an illness in the week leading up to this recording. Which means the guys aren't in the same room, and worse, no Soundboard for such an important occasion *cue anguish the world over*

But that won't stop the guys from doing their level best to disagree, banter and entertain - something they've been striving to do for night on nine years now.

There's no better time than to join the Countdown ... unless you're a hardcore MCU fan. In which case, see you next week ... as The Countdown continues ...

Invincible Season 2A review Nov 28, 2023

Show notes

Wayne has COVID so all plans were scuttled in the 450th week of The Countdown. Which means instead of getting a review of Napoleon, you get a review of the first half Prime Video's Invincible.

Making it's return after almost 2.5 years (discounting the Atom Eve special), has Robert Kirkman's story lost it's way? Or does it double down on the first season's greatness? Either way, one host is picking at the show's seams while the other seems very happy with what he's gotten. But when final scores are delivered, who is the real critic? Find out as The Countdown continues ... Time Stamps: Invincible Season 2A NON-SPOILER Review: 0:00 - 9:50 Invincible Season 2A SPOILER-FILLED Discussion: 9:50 - 19:43

Top 10 Amazon Prime Video Watches Nov 24, 2023

Show notes

Countdown #449

Paul thought it would be an easy countdown to put together but Paul thought wrong...

Join the boys this week as they scour the far corners of the massive streaming service which is Amazon's Prime Video for the very best things to watch there (in Australia). Film and television series are fair game, and the guys are not limiting themselves to Prime Originals, so get ready to add a whole lot more to your watchlist. Who is recommending things he hasn't even finished? Who has more Aussie productions on their list? And who might have broken new ground in NOT choosing anything that is a straight horror this week?

You can probably guess the answer to all of these questions if you're a regular listener, but if you're not, or you just want to be sure, get on board for another epic episode, as The Countdown continues ...

Thanksgiving review Nov 21, 2023

Show notes

This week Wayne is wearing his wussy-whiny pants and refusing to see a horror film, so Paul ventures to the cinema with his brother to see Eli Roth's Grindhouse inspired flick, Thanksgiving. Wayne calls Paul and people who enjoy such films as "sickos", but Paul bravely soldiers on to bring you a review of this brand new release, just in time for the North American holiday. Can Paul see past some gory kills when rating a film? And can Wayne get that such things may appeal to some? Find out as The Countdown continues ...
