Underground bunkers, for what? Kelly does not need to survive the apocalypse. Just leave her be with her $40 Frosty Buddy and still-cold iced coffee.

Miriam Webster’s word of the year for 2023, authentic, saw a substantial increase in traffic last year. Brands and celebrity influencers are tapping into the power of what's genuine and true-to-you. Kelly and Lizz agree — there’s now a divide between influencers and content creators.

Kelly has IG recommendations on fast lane philosophies. Check out @tidymoose for a professional organizer’s year of no shopping (and donating two items a day), @sproutingarrows who is helping single income families thrive, and a Car Mom forever favorite @naptimekitchen.

Kids toys aren’t taking over Kelly’s house, but they are taking over today’s driveway dump. Kelly is figuring out what the hot thing is by diving into play in her kids’ world of toys. If you’re feeling overwhelmed post-Christmas, focus on giving your kids floor space, try a two-week toy purgatory, and take extra toys your kids still love to grandma and grandpa’s house to give them new life.

Triplets are on the way and a loyal listener is looking for advice for her bestie. With three incoming babies and two large dogs, which vehicle would Kelly choose? Hands down, the Ford Expedition with a bench was made for this family. Read more about why Kelly chooses the Expedition over the Tahoe on the Car Mom blog! Another listener asks Kelly and Lizz: Have you always known you wanted more than one kid? How did you know when it was time to have another?

Industry news reveals the most reliable brands according to Consumer Reports. Lexus and Toyota top the charts. Calling all green Suzukis — is your vehicle Hollywood ready? Listen in for more about this auto-casting-call. Kelly and Lizz reminisce about early 00s Blackberrys and cell phones after hearing they’re partnering with Stellantis and Amazon to create a virtual cockpit.

The English language is giving Gen Z with today’s Miriam Webster word of the day, skulk. The word means ‘to move around in a stealthy or secretive way’ and Kelly wants to know why we’re not just saying ‘sneak.’

Lizz is over being on the wrong side of Instagram and is here to share her scary mom moment in a safe space. One thing about this new mama, if her baby is locked in the car, a window’s getting shattered. Mattie shares a little marine wisdom: “If I second thought every decision I made in a high stress situation, I would never sleep at night.” Wrapping up driveway dumps, Lizz is watching and highly recommends Apple TV Lessons in Chemistry and she’s just begun reading Hunt, Gather, Parent by Michaeleen Doucleff.

A mom of twins writes in to find out how she can foster connection between her kiddos. Kelly and Lizz say take the pressure off and let your kids spend time together (without mom) to bond. A carpool family with a four-year-old and a one-year-old are shopping for a mid-size SUV, that's comparable to the Ford Edge, with a $30K budget. Kelly recommends checking out a new Ford Edge or a Santa Fe, Rav4, Atlas Crossport or Tiguan.

In industry news, the Car Mom’s car of the year is almost here and today Kelly’s announcing the four finalists. Vehicles that got a refresh, redesign, or new release were eligible. Kelly evaluated each vehicle on comfort, safety, value, technology, passenger capabilities to narrow down the list. The four finalists are: the 2023/24 Honda Pilot, the 2023 Toyota Grand Highlander, the 2023 Lexus TX and the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas.

Kelly shares some time-saving Costco finds for today’s ditch the drive-through. Frozen chicken pineapple meatballs are easy to throw together with jasmine rice, broccoli, and primal kitchen Teriyaki sauce. Pre-pulled rotisserie chicken makes easy chicken salad, chicken pot pie, and chicken quesadillas.

In their last three transactions Lizz is making purchases on her Missouri suburb homesteading journey and Kelly is getting ready for Freduccini’s first birthday. Lizz is all about the sourdough and now has a bread maker to match. Her new immersion blender is being put to work in her baby-led-weaning hybrid. Lastly, her new Switch game Hogwarts Legacy is a five out of five stars she highly recommends. Kelly picked up a mini steamer, party decorations, Stanley straws and a $40 iced coffee cozi that Lizz insists she return.

    2024 IS COOKIN' Jan 02, 2024
    Show notes

Hattie gave herself a rite of passage haircut this Christmas season, but the kids were still looking darling in their holiday attire and celebrations went off without a hitch. Now it’s time to start fresh, try something new, and embrace the New Year opportunity!

The first millennial word of the year is ‘let them cook.’ This Gen Z phrase is best used when someone is doing their thing and thriving. Another variation is ‘someone cooked here’ meaning a person you’re dating has been taught something by a previous partner.

→ Are you buying a car in 2024? Or driving a Subaru Ascent? It’s your turn to head over to the Carpool podcast reviews, leave your rating, and tell Kelly and Lizz what you love about the show! Tell the gals about the ride you’re looking for, too!

Lizz is ready to grow in several areas of her life this year, so she’s setting attainable 15 minute goals that jive with the reality of being a new mom. Kelly reminds us that laundry is so kind, it’ll always be there when you get back.

First up on driveway dumps, Kelly is more certain than ever that men in Christmas morning jammies still give her the ick. Kelly’s still obsessed with her pot coffee. She’s a Folgers with heavy cream kinda girly. Lip liners are Kelly’s new makeup revelation and Lizz is enjoying her most sentimental Christmas gift — a cutting board with her grandma’s rum cake recipe on it.

Do your New Year’s goals include saving money? With the Rocket Money app you can track all of your subscriptions and catch those unwanted subscriptions before your bank account takes a hit. Rocket Money will even help you fully deactivate your old subscriptions. In January, Kelly’s speaking at the National Automotive Dealers Association and the New York Auto Show tours are sold out! Looking ahead to the rest of 2024’s automotive action, Kelly is on the edge of her seat for the Traverse and Acadia (but also nervous about their pricing), is interested in the Hyundai Santa Fe, and is excited for the EV9. She and Lizz predict this will be a telling year for what’s happening in the EV market. Both gals are eagerly waiting for a Ford Explorer and Honda Odyssey redesign.

A listener writes in for advice on managing mom guilt. Kelly says every mom will either feel guilty for leaving their kiddos to go to work or guilty for being with them and wanting to be at work. There are benefits to everyone — including dad — when mom is away. Another listener asks if she should go with the standard Tahoe Expedition or opt for the extended wheelbase. Kelly says for three kids go with the bench, but for four kids go with the extended version. Lizz adds a handy reminder to check your garage size if you’re shopping for a bigger vehicle.

Lizz won’t shut up about today’s ditch the drive-through: her sweet and sour sticky slow cooker ribs. These mouth-watering morsels are cooked with ground ginger, salt, and pepper and then broiled with a mixture of soy sauce, ketchup, apricot preserves, and apple cider vinegar.

Over Christmas break check out the book Bright Lights, Big Christmas. In the new year Kelly and Lizz will share their recap!

Today’s millennial word of the day is ‘punching.’ A term that comes from punching above your weight in boxing, it now means getting someone who’s out of your league in dating or marriage.

Kelly and Lizz’s mom is turning to Chris Kringle for the holidays, and they are here for it. The candles will be lit, the table will be set with fine china, and everyone will be dressed to the nines. Get festive, wear your sequin blazers, and pull out your sparkly wedding shoes to celebrate! In her driveway dump Kelly also shares how she thinks Cameo is a little thirsty, Lizz rants about thousand dollar advent calendars, and the gals agree that a 360 view should be required before all denim purchases.

Before you pull the trigger on any of these baby things that, let's be honest, kids use for a few months at the most, make sure you check Goodbye gear. It is the best place to buy second hand baby gear. It’s where Kelly’s found some of her favorite items like the Baby Brezza and an alphabet rug for her kiddo’s room. Shop and sell your open box and unused kid gear, toys, and more on Good Buy Gear.

→ Head over to goodbuygear.com and get $20 OFF your order of $100 or more with the code CARPOOL.

A listener writes in for advice on her sister drama. As a big sis, she’s always inviting her little sis over for dinner. Her sister never brings anything, says thank you, or even offers to help clean up. Kelly and Lizz agree — she needs a heads up on guest etiquette from her big sister.

→ Write in your advice questions! Send Kelly and Lizz an email to get your question featured on the show at hello@thecarmomofficial.com

In industry news, Kia E9 EV buyers will now get free charging credits, Ford is cutting 2024 F-150 lightning production plans by half, and buyers are opting for hybrids — shocker!!!

IN DEFENSE OF STEW MEAT Dec 12, 2023
    Show notes

Kelly and Lizz are back from seeing The Entitled Housewive (aka comedian Becky Robinson) live. In honor of this hilarious show, call your funny friend and check in to see if they’re okay.

→ Are you a Tahoe driver? Then head over to the Carpool reviews and leave Kelly and Lizz a rating and share what you love about the show!

Kelly finally saw the Little Mermaid movie and she’s not in love with the non-animated movie. Namely, Flounder is not cute, Sebastian gives Kelly the creeps, and Prince Eric is giving icky vibes. But, the next good sitcom, Young Sheldon, is keeping her entertained. George is not sure about Kelly’s elf-on-the-shelf and Lizz is stressed about her first flight with James. Kelly has a plane seat hack to share and Lizz has a hot take on Stew Meat.

Kelly’s New Year’s resolution is making new adult friends. She’ll be aiming to meet or hang out with one new family a month. Lizz is looking forward to more motherhood milestones and constant change and growth in the new year.

On today’s advice segment, a Carpooler is looking for a mid-size used vehicle after totalling her car. She’s putting $5K down and wants to keep her payment at or under $350/mo. Kelly suggests the Kia Telluride or Sorento. Another listener is looking for advice on breakup distractions and supporting siblings through heartbreak.

→ Write in your advice questions! Send Kelly and Lizz an email to get your question featured on the show at hello@thecarmomofficial.com

Chevy’s holiday commercial kicks of industry news — be warned that this one’s a tear jerker! A new independent EV company has just released the Lucid Gravity. And Kelly’s got beef with the marketing of the new Kia Carnival reclining lounge seats. Unsafe and unsettling.

Steal this ditch the drive-through twist on taco night to get you out of your dinner rut this week: baked beef tacos. Brown your ground beef, mix in taco seasoning, then add red enchilada sauce. Rub one side of your corn tortillas with olive oil and lay them flat on a baking sheet. Put your meat mixture inside of it, fold the tortilla over, and bake it in the oven at 400 degrees F for 10 to 15 minutes.

If you’ve got tips on how Kelly can get her kids to eat ‘saucy’ aka spicy food, shoot her an email at hello@thecarmomofficial.com.

Today Ed Loh, the head of editorial for MotorTrend is here for an iconic interview. Kelly’s been relying on MotorTrend for years and loves how they’re not afraid to have a take.

Ed shares the history of the car of the year awards from MotorTrend, including the first 1949 car of the year, the Cadillac. The newest addition to the awards is the automotive industry executive of the year.

The 2024 competition was hot with 40 compact, mid-size, and full-size SUVs going head to head on Hyundai and Honda proving grounds. Vehicles were measured by six criteria: design, engineering excellence, efficiency, active and passive safety, value, performance of intended function.

The SUV of the year title ultimately went to the Chevy Blazer EV. Kelly asks Ed what he thinks about the Apple CarPlay swap Chevy made for Google integration. Ed shares his thoughts on software defined vehicles.

THE CROCKTOBER GREAT EIGHT WITH NAPTIME KITCHEN Dec 05, 2023
    Show notes

Kate from Naptime Kitchen takes a break from book writing to join Kelly and Lizz today. The Crock-tober debate is lively, ditch the drive-through will get you through Christmas week, and the episode’s end takes a turn into the deep.

→ Are you a Subaru Outback mom? It’s your turn to head over to the Carpool podcast reviews, leave a five star review, and let Kelly and Lizz know what you love about the show.

Kate shares her favorite Naptime Kitchen Christmas hacks. She shares her always genius Christmas clothing bins and a little tip to take them to the next level — buy next year’s pajamas this year on clearance. The 12 edible gifts of Christmas also get an honorable mention with savory options to delight just about anyone in your life.

Kelly’s big takeaway from Crock-tober was that not all recipes take all day. She can start a crock pot meal at 2 pm and still have dinner ready on time. Kate realized that some recipes could be just as easily made in a regular pot. Honey Butter Chicken was an adventurous pick that got the gals comfortable with curry. The Swedish Meatballs got a quick boot out of the running. Results varied. Kelly might try Lasagna Soup again, but with a different recipe. Stuffing Chicken was a tasty peek into the holiday season. Tuscan Chicken, Broccoli Cheddar Soup, and Citrus Beef Tacos got mixed reviews. And Dr. Pepper Pulled Pork received rave reviews all around for being an easy recipe with leftovers that can be reused throughout the week.

Culprit is today’s Merriam Webster word of the day.

Lizz wants to know where the Daily Mail was when she was covering the Oreos double stuffed scandal. This shrinkflation is all over today’s driveway dumps.

In base model luxuries, Kelly’s got questions. What are you doing without a heating pad in your bed? And what ‘self-car’ items do you need to stock your ride with? Kelly and Lizz’s favorites are floss picks, mints, wet wipes, hand sanitizer, hand lotion, cuticle cream, hairbrush, deodorant, and chapstick.

Christmas movies kick off the gals’ December bucket list. For the adults, Feast of the Seven Fishes is a Christmas coded movie that’s perfect for the holiday season. Lizz is looking forward to the Suntrup Automotive Christmas Party, an extended family open house, and San Diego in December. Kelly’s making homemade chex mix, taking the kids to see holiday lights, making a holiday cocktail, and sharing Tyler’s too-effective Santa toy hack.

A listener writes in for advice about adult gift exchanges, and Kelly and Lizz have the best recommendations: Stanleys, a Home Pura, a gift card to a favorite restaurant, a wireless charger bank, a wireless speaker, or something you genuinely love yourself. Another mom wants to know how she can keep up with her housework? Kelly’s nearly drowning, but her daily cleaning strategy and laundry basket system keep her head above water.

Today’s ditch the drive-through is a fancy spin on a simple favorite. Just place a block of cream cheese or soft cheese in a 9x13 pan, pour two pints of cherry tomatoes over the cheese, drizzle with olive oil, and bake at 400 degrees for 30 minutes. While the cheese and tomatoes bake, cook your pasta. Add cooked pasta to your 9x13 and stir to combine.

Today, the millennial word takes a break, making way for the Merriam Webster word of the day, abnegate meaning to deny or renounce your responsibilities.

Kelly’s getting ready to make her new year’s resolutions on the driveway dump, which includes 12 books to get her out of her reading rut. What’s going on with name consultants on Instagram? Kelly and Lizz would never. Kelly is getting up before her kids for her glamor chores and is taking ten minutes every night to power clean the kitchen. If you’re still struggling with your syllables, too, Kelly has a super helpful tip from a lister.

Kelly snagged 30% off ABH cosmetics to build out her secondary makeup bag, bought neon yellow hoodies for Fred and George, and stocked up on her Spanx favorites for 50% off.

In industry news, loan rates are at a 20 year high at 14% APR and Motor Trend reports the most stolen cars and trucks in 2022.

Ditch the drive-through comes from listener Jamie, a delicious chicken and broccoli ring. All you need is a nine ounce can of chunk chicken, two stalks of broccoli, one small onion, one can of cream of chicken soup, a clove of garlic, two cans of Pillsbury crescent rolls, eight ounces of shredded cheddar cheese, and an optional bell pepper. Make a sun ring of rolls, chop up all your ingredients, mix 'em together and spread them around the ring. Fold the crescent rolls in and bake until golden brown.
