The Katherine Massey Book Club hosts the 9th study session on Catherine Pelonero's 2017 publication, Absolute Madness: A True Story of a Serial Killer, Race, and a City Divided. White Men from Illinois to Virginia to Texas continue to plot out gun massacres in the U.S. There's been so much carnage, many have totally forgotten that an 18-year-old White man killed almost a dozen black people on the East side of Buffalo, New York this spring. In the same vein, we've barely spoken to anyone (White or non-white) who knew any details about Joey Christopher's terrorist assault on black citizens of New York. Last week, Pelonero stressed how everyone felt awful for Christopher's White mother, Therese. Police executed a search warrant on her residence, but insisted they would complete their probe and exit the house expeditiously. White neighbors and even Joey's former White girlfriend sympathized with the suspected killer. His former girlfriend allegedly felt bad about revealing so much information to officers. Officials in Ft. Benning, Georgia where Christopher was stationed, told investigators that Joey was an average soldier who physically attacked a number of non-white troops who called him names and mocked his masculinity. The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Dr. Robert M. Silverman. With a focus on community development, affordable housing, and education policy, Dr. Silverman is an associate professor in the Department of Sociology in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Buffalo. In the weeks since the May 2022 White Terrorist attack on Buffalo, NY's east side, The C.O.W.S. has spoken with many scholars and Buffalo natives to better understand what happened. Hopefully, Dr. Silverman will aid our learning. We'll discuss his 2014 report: William Worthy’s Concept of ‘‘Institutional Rape’’ Revisited: Anchor Institutions and Residential Displacement in Buffalo, NY. It seems that for decades, black residents of Buffalo have received few benefits from investment and revitalization projects around the city. Once again, White people do not seem uninformed about what's taken place in Buffalo, nor does there seem to be the White will to correct these problems. We’ll use these sessions to hone our use of words as tools to reveal truth, neutralize White people. We’ll examine news reports from the past seven days and – hopefully – promote a constructive dialog. #ANTIBLACKNESS The fireworks and battle simulations of Independence Day were interrupted by White Terrorism in Illinois. Robert E. “Bobby” Crimo III, a 21-year old White Man, opened fire on a Highland Park parade, killing at least six people in the process. Crimo dressed as a Woman to evade police, and contemplated starting a second terrorist attack before he was apprehended. Highland Park is a suspected Racially Restricted Region/"sundown town," with a very low population of black people (1% or less according to the Chicago Tribune). In Richmond, Virginia, enforcement officials arrested two suspects who allegedly planned similar carnage for the Commonwealth state. Ohio's 4th of July celebration switched to protests, anger and curfews over the police killing of Jayland Walker. It's reported that Walker sustained 60 (sixty) wounds, and approximately 90 rounds were fired. The fatal shooting was last month, and evidence from the killing suggests White officers lied about what happened. Across the pond, Prime Minister Boris Johnson is once again facing demands to resign. Former deputy chief whip Chris Pincher is accused of groping males and other acts of debauchery. Pincher was appointed by Johnson, and now both are facing calls to resign. Correction. Johnson submitted his resignation before week's end. The Context of White Supremacy hosts the weekly summit on Neutralizing Workplace Racism. Even though Covid-19 remains with us, many employees are being forced back to the office - or were never allowed to leave. Some reports analyze how Covid has changed the work environment. Fashion has apparently undergone a major shift. After two years of hybrid work - or exclusively working from home, many workers have gotten extra comfortable wearing less than professional attire. Now, that many have returned to the office, leisure attire has taken the place of business suits and blazers. Gus recommends that non-white people refrain from wearing footies, pajamas, sweatpants or anything other than what you typically wore to the office before the pandemic. Neely Fuller Jr. once told us that individuals classified as White don't even have to wear clothes. They're White. The Katherine Massey Book Club hosts the 8th study session on Catherine Pelonero's 2017 publication, Absolute Madness: A True Story of a Serial Killer, Race, and a City Divided. It's been over a month since the May White Terrorist attack that left 10 black people dead in east Buffalo. The C.O.W.S. has spoken with numerous Whites who were born in Buffalo, taught classes at the University of Buffalo, and/or wrote books and reports on the history of Racism in Buffalo. They've all been poorly informed about convicted White killer Joseph G. Christopher, and none of these White scholars mentioned the murders in their work. This omission is either willful White Supremacy or lazy, slapdash research. Last week, Pelonero began exploring the family life and background of "Joey." His White father was verbally abusive - and some readers wondered if he was physically violent. White Father and son bonded around their love of firearms. Pelonero details how Christopher made no friends when he enlisted at Ft. Benning in Georgia. He wrote semi-literate letters to his mother back in Buffalo about how the other soldiers mocked him, called him a "fa@@*$," and teased him about wetting the bed. "Joey" reportedly stabbed a black male in retaliation for the verbal insults. In fact, he physically assaulted a number of soldiers at Ft. Benning. The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Dr. Neil Kraus. A professor of politics, geography and international studies at the University of Wisconsin River Falls, Dr. Kraus is Department Chair, Pre-Law Advisor, as well as Chair of the International Studies Program. He pays particular attention to race and politics. Since the White Terrorist slaughter at an east Buffalo Tops grocery store, where 10 black people were killed, Gus has devoted substantial time and energy to studying the history of White Terrorist violence in Buffalo. While digging at the University of Washington library, Gus found Dr. Kraus's book, Race, Neighborhoods, and Community Power: Buffalo Politics, 1934 - 1997. This work provides a comprehensive history of west New York, and the many ways Whites have deliberately maintained and refined the System of White Supremacy in all areas of people activity. However, it fails to mention the 22 Caliber Killer, Joseph G. Christopher and his butchering of numerous black males in Buffalo. The killings occurred in the middle of the time frame this book explores and further evidence some of the major themes of his book. We'll ask Dr. Kraus if this this was a willful omission or personal ignorance. Interestingly, Dr. Kraus's White brother dialed in and stated that Gus put his brother "on the defensive" about his failure to include the .22 Caliber Killings. Stay sober if you have to attend a company picnic. We'll hear how educators concluded a tacky academic year - including lots of abuse of non-white faculty. Air travel for the holiday weekend will be chaotic with pilots and airline workers reporting unsafe and overworked conditions. The White male pilots demands for safe work conditions should serve as an important illustration for non-white people. Our safety and health is routinely violated under Racist work conditions. The Context of White Supremacy hosts the 7th study session on Catherine Pelonero's 2017 publication, Absolute Madness: A True Story of a Serial Killer, Race, and a City Divided. We just recognized 7 years since the Charleston, South Carolina Terrorist attack on Mother Emanuel AME church, where nine black worshipers were killed. Gracyn Doctor, daughter of the Rev. DePayne Middleton-Doctor, one of the nine people murdered, recently said we seem to be forgetting the South Carolina and more recent May 2022 Buffalo shootings already. Seeing as practically no one remembers the black males butchered in 1980 Buffalo and New York state, Gracyn has reason for concern. Last week, Pelonero detailed the murder of Roger Adams and the near murder of Albert Menefee. Once again, a White witness describes feeling "safe" seeing the presence of a White stranger, who happened to be a racist serial killer. Adams's child reportedly views his father's corpse on television. Pelonero also details an attack on a White Woman, Kim Edmiston. This assault was not initially linked to the "22 Caliber Killings." Pelonero emphasizes that a number of black residents set booby traps to catch the killer and claim the reward money. Nearly a half a year passed since the killings began, and the police made no arrests. In fact, the Klan orchestrated a rally on Dr. Martin Luther King's' birthday of 1981 in downtown Buffalo. Director of the Johnson Black Cultural Center at Vanderbilt University, Dr. Dobson teaches Creative Writing at Fisk University and is an award winning writer himself. Gus landed on Dr. Dobson's 2010 publication, Rendered Invisible: Stories of Black and Whites, Love and Death, while researching the 1980 slaughters of black males in Buffalo and New York state at large. Dobson's work is a fictional narrative of black people in Buffalo living in the midst of the killings. Dobson was born and reared in Buffalo, and his connections to west New York are evident in his writing.
