Ms. Brown is the managing editor for The New Orleans Tribune - an Independent black news publication with nearly a 150 year legacy in southern Louisiana. Ms. Brown has invested more than a decade of service at the Tribune and continues "to offer its readers news and information from a perspective not heard in the cityÃ¢??s mainstream media." World attention is now receding from the Crescent City as the Hurricane Katrina festivities and shindigs have mostly concluded. The Army Corps of Engineers inadequately constructed and inadequately maintained the levees designed to protect New Orleans, Louisiana. The levees failed, resulting in thousands of deaths, billions in damages, and the displacement of a million US citizens. This event and its aftermath is one of the most appalling campaigns of Racism in history. A decade after the catastrophe, 100,000 black New Orleanians never returned home and income disparity between Whites and blacks has skyrocketed. Former President George W. The Context of White Supremacy hosts the 10th and final study session on Stephen Kantrowitz's, Ben Tillman And The Reconstruction of White Supremacy. Benjamin "Pitchfork" Tillman is one of South Carolina's most beloved sons. He's a former governor, US senator, co-founder of Clemson University and Winthrop University, and a dedicated White Supremacist. He crowed about his collusion in the murder and torture of black citizens and influenced White Supremacist laws across the country. The June 17th Terrorist attack on Mother Emanuel A.M.E. sparked interest in South Carolina Racism. Mr. Kantrowitz knows that we're investigating his biography and emailed Gus his most recent essay on Mr. Tillman. His summation of Tillman's career as a South Carolina politician is that, "Tillman bent over backwards to make sure his policies benefited as few African Americans as possible." This helps explain why a few Confederate flags may be gone, but Tillman monuments still litter South Carolina. Last week's installment provided one of the most profound Tillman quotes: "If you scratch the white man too deep, you will find the same savage whose ancestry used to roam wild..." The US senator lectured nationally and was seriously considered as a presidential candidate while broadcasting the gospel of White Supremacy. He relentlessly campaigned against black education and suffrage. This is the South Carolina heritage that gave birth to Dylann Roof. Gavin S. Johnson visits The Context of White Supremacy. Mr. Johnson is a New Orleans native and a hospital and health care professional. We'll review his memoir, Prisoners of Katrina: Stranded at Work in New Orleans Parish Prison. Mr. Johnson brought his elderly father with him to work at the prison on August 28th, 2005. The toxic flood waters drowned the city the following day. He recounts a dizzying scene of a flooding penitentiary, guards abandoning their posts, sick prisoners, brawling prisoners, and no communication or backup. Mr. Johnson makes note of being one of the few Whites in this frenzied environment. We'll get his thoughts on the 10 year anniversary of levee breech and the alleged recovery of the "Crescent City." Gus' learned about Racism and the Civil Rights Movement in Bond's class for a semester. The New York Times took this moment to brand his great-grandmother, Jane Bond, a "slave mistress." The sizable number of White chics on the Jonathan Ferrell jury are likely flexing their power, as reports indicate a deadlock in deliberations in the manslaughter trial of Randall Kerrick. Ferguson, Missouri continues to invite protests and confrontation with law enforcement, while last summer's protesters are still facing possible convictions. Kimberly Rivers Roberts visits The Context of White Supremacy. Roberts is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana and a survivor of the breeched levees and Hurricane Katrina. We'll explore her documentary film, Trouble The Water (2008). Kimberly and her husband recorded their final hours in New Orleans before the city was drowned on August 29th, 2005. Danny Glover helped produce the project, and the New York Times and The Times-Picayune published flattering reviews. The film delivers raw footage of the couple's house being submerged as toxic flood waters consume the city. The film shows Kimberly and her family courageously fighting to rescue neighbors and black elders. We'll get her reflections on how the catastrophe altered her hometown and her life. We previously discussed her long record of service "To celebrate healing in the Black community and to mobilize Black people to overcome the lie of Black inferiority and the emotional legacies of enslavement and racism so that we can all reach our full potential."
