The Context of White Supremacy hosts the 9th study session on Gary Rivlin's Katrina: After The Flood. Mr. Rivlin is a White man; while employed at the New York Times he covered the historic engineering failure and negligence that destroyed New Orleans in August of 2005. His 2015 bestseller reviews a decade of asymmetrical "recovery." To make it plain, ten years of black New Orleanians being racially dislocated and purposely impaired from rebuilding their lives. Rivlin investigates all areas of people activity: the institution of charter schools, the destruction of public housing, and the looting of funds specified for flood victims. Last week's session described how White families in Lakeview had returned to their houses and completed the upgrades on their homes within months of the storm. By contrast, black families struggled to gain access to their property and had to pray for working toilets. Rivlin included the remarkable efforts of former black panther Malik Rahim. When powerful Whites failed to aid black New Orleanians, Rahim founded Common Ground, which provided food, medical supplies and housing repairs for tens of thousands. Dr. Travis Bristol visits The Context of White Supremacy. A Research and Policy Fellow with the Stanford Center for Opportunity Policy in Education, Dr. Bristol investigates the practices that support teacher and student learning and the policies that enable and constrain teacher workplace experiences and retention. He's also a consultant for the World Bank. We'll explore his research on forces driving black male teachers out of the classroom. He suggests that for many black educators, having little support from White colleagues or resources to help navigate White-dominated schools made staying in the classroom undesirable. We'll examine strategies to retain and encourage black teachers and how black children are harmed when the person in front of the class is always White. A coallition of black scholars at American University in Washington, D.C. refused to quietly endure Racist abuse from their fellow White classmates. The trifling social media posts recieved widespread attention in March of this year. NBC's Washington affiliate reported university administrators "announced a forum would take place... to 'advance AU toward its ideal as an inclusive community.'" Almost eight months later, TheDarkeningAU has seen little evidence of a more "inclusive", less racist environment. We'll ask these black students what they think should be done to effectively extinguish Racism on campus and how these experiences have altered their understanding of young White people. A $9,000 reward has been offered - although Darren Wilson and Daniel Holtzclaw received heftier sums for brutalizing black citizens. Racists seethed about black actors in the latest Star Wars installment and Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe being awarded the Chinese Peace Prize. The successful protests of black scholars in South Africa produced a freeze on tuition fees for education. Their US counterparts have highlight racist obstacles to academic excellence facing black students on this side of the planet. "Thomas in NY" suspects the other KKK (The Kardashians) have struck again, decimating another black male (watch out Kanye). If more evidence was required to debunk the cock and bull story that money or class trumps White Supremacy, Rihanna revealed that it's cool for her to be a "young black woman singing, dancing, partying and looking hot." But when it's time for serious business, Whites designate her as just another nigger. Mr. Rivlin is a White man; while working for the New York Times he covered the infamous engineering failure and negligence that drowned New Orleans in August of 2005. His 2015 bestseller audits a decade of lopsided "recovery." To be explicit, ten years of black New Orleanians being racially dislocated and purposely impeded from rebuilding their lives. Rivlin scrutinizes all areas of people activity: the institution of charter schools, the destruction of public housing, and the looting of funds designated for flood victims. Armed soldiers restricted access to the Lower 9th until December 2005 - months after the storm. White areas like Lakeview got electricity restored months before most black residents.
