Health officials in Louisiana, which has become a so-called hotspot for the virus, and beyond have reiterated that there is a correlation between diabetes and obesity and the Covid-19 virus. "In a report from the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) published Thursday, researchers conclude that Americans with diabetes, chronic lung disease and cardiovascular disease — all diseases linked to obesity — are at higher risk of experiencing a severe infection due to COVID-19." The Context of White Supremacy hosts our Friday weekly forum on neutralizing Workplace Racism. The unprecedented, indefinite, all-encompassing, global shutdown in response to the coronavirus continues to devour spring, the calendar year. Workers across the united states report unsafe conditions, a lack of training to maintain safety given the new health hazards, and a lack of protective equipment. Amazon employees in the U.S. and abroad, as well as Instacart workers are organizing work stoppages to demand safer work conditions while the pandemic rages on. We’ll ask C.O.W.S. listeners if their employers are demonstrating the highest regard for the health and well being of all staff and clients. A number of listeners reported sneezing, wheezing, and coughing colleagues who were allowed to remain at work – a potential vector for contagion. We’ll discuss possible amendments for workplace code under these incredible days. If you’re being allowed to work from home, we’ll see how folks are adjusting to not having to commute to the office. The Context of White Supremacy hosts our sixth study session on Dr. Sylvia Hood Washington's Packing Them In: An Archaeology of Environmental Racism in Chicago, 1865-1954. An environmental epidemiologist, environmental engineer and environmental historian, Dr. Washington is Chief Environmental Research Scientist at Environmental Health Research Associates, LLC. With research experience examining the impact of industrial pollution on human health and ecosystems, she's the creator and editor-in-chief of the first international environmental health disparities journal, Environmental Justice. We'll continue examining her 2004 text, Packing Them In: An Archaeology of Environmental Racism in Chicago, 1865-1954. Chicago is a significant city in North America, and black people have sojourned to this region for over a century. Consequently, Whites have devoted a staggering amount of time, energy and resources to study, warehouse, terrorize and poison the black people of the "windy city." During last week's session Dr. Hood described the great migration of the late 19th and 20th century. Legions of black people labored to escape terrorism in the south and migrated to western and northern cities like Chicago. Consequently, northern Racists studied and terrorized black newcomers. In Chicago - and elsewhere - black people were regarded as a medical menace. Whites claimed black people were a vector for disease to contaminate pure Whites. However, Dr. Hood notes that one major result of the 1871 great Chicago fire was the relocation of vice - prostitution and gambling - to the black part of town. The reading also detailed the dozens of bombings used to terrorize and punish black residents for attempting to purchase houses in the White section of town. The Context of White Supremacy examines the Confronting White Nationalism In Schools toolkit. This report was published by the Western States Center and authored by a group of White Women educators, Nora Flanagan, Jessica Acee, and Lindsay Schubiner. After detecting a surge in White children promoting Nazi propaganda and explicitly White Supremacist content, the authors/educators decided not to be spectators. Their toolkit offers specific examples of potential scenarios or racist conduct, and suggestions on how best to neutralize these problems. We'll ask for a distinction between overtly "White Nationalist" conduct and typical White behavior towards black people. We’ll examine news reports from the past seven days and – hopefully – promote a constructive dialog. #ANTIBLACKNESS Still in the initial stages of the global Covid-19 pandemic, we'll evaluate reports of the spread and evolution of the disease. This week, the United States become the country with the highest number of reported cases in the world. While a great deal of attention is focused on the high volume of cases in New York City, it's been quietly reported that New Orleans Louisiana has the highest per-capita rate of deaths (by a wide margin) from the virus of any county/parish in the country. The Times -Picayune reports, "One factor that is almost certainly a contributor: New Orleanians, on balance, are less healthy than other Americans, with high rates of diabetes, hypertension, obesity and other health conditions that can make one more apt to die from coronavirus." There are also a growing number of reports on so called Asian Americans being assailed and blamed for the spread of the "Chinese virus." We'll also discuss allegations that North Carolina Senator Richard Burr knew well in advance about the pending economic doom as a result of the virus. A staple of White Supremacy is deception. We'll also pause to recognize the passing of Dr. Llaila O. The Context of White Supremacy hosts our Friday weekly forum on neutralizing Workplace Racism. The historic disruptions and global shutdowns continue as confusion and chaos abounds globally in response to "the Chinese virus" (Wuhan coronavirus). Millions filed for unemployment this month, shattering previous records for the United States. Not only have the quarantines and forced-isolation closed or minimized an enormous number of enterprises, while those who are working are facing extraordinary new challenges on the job. In Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania sanitation workers are refusing work because they report a lack of updated safety training as well and an absence of protective gear. It should not be lost on us that this is almost 52 years to the day of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's assassination in Tennessee. He was in Memphis to assist black sanitation workers who were on strike for safe work conditions. Importantly, once these immigrants were accepted as White, they moved to White enclaves with substantially fewer toxins to protest. Dr. Washington also described the years of White squabbling about over "Bubbly Creek" - a Chicago water way that's suffered so much pollution the water has literally percolated with poison and contaminants for a century. The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Anna Clark. A Detroit, Michigan journalist and author, Clark was a Fulbright fellow in Nairobi, Kenya, and a Knight-Wallace journalism fellow at the University of Michigan, and she was awarded the Excellence in Environmental Journalism award from the Great Lakes Environmental Law Council. We'll discuss her 2018 publication The Poisoned City, which investigates the years of deception and suffering of the Flint, Michigan lead poisoning. The predominantly black Michigan city attempted to alert White officials for years to the unsafe and hazardous water conditions. They were ignored, rebuffed and lied to. Years after the name "Flint" has become globally synonymous with lead-poisoned water, no one has been held criminally liable for the catastrophe and it's still controversial as to whether or not the water is safe to drink. Adding insult to injury, the 2020 global coronavirus has resulted in unprecedented measures to ensure the health and well-being of all citizens. This includes a halt to evictions in numerous regions around the planet, as well as a halt to water shutoffs. White officials have devised all manner of imaginative schemes to ensure that everyone has access to water.
