#21: BibRave Sports Doc, Dr. Tim! Dec 20, 2016
    Show notes

Our guest this week is co-owner of Physicians Plus Chicago and longtime BibRave friend, Dr. Tim Marando, Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) and Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (N.D.).

Dr. Tim and his co-owner/brother, Dr. Paul, are sports medicine docs with a practice largely focussed on runners, triathletes, and competitive fitness athletes (CrossFit, olympic weightlifting, etc.)

As chiropractor and naturopath, Dr. Tim utilizes various treatments such as spinal manipulation, Active Release Techniques(ART), Fascial Distortion Method (FDM), Graston Technique, Kinesio Taping, McKenzie Method, nutritional supplementation and dietary/lifestyle modification.

Dr. Tim and Dr. Paul were our sports docs in Chicago, and because we saw such amazing results from their treatment, we've referred literally dozens of people to their practice.

    SHOW NOTES:

    • The body can learn, but it doesn't know what to learn so it will learn bad habits. -- paraphrased from Dr. Tim
    • Book reco: Becoming a Supple Leopard, by Glen Cordoza
    • ClassPass - ClassPass is a monthly membership that connects you to 8,000+ of the best fitness studios
    • Recommended at-home therapy tools: lacrosse ball, foam roller (whatever brand you get, make sure it has a hard plastic center. All foam = rapid breakdown), therapy or resistance bands
    • Physicians Plus Facebook, Twitter, Instagram

As usual with Coach Matt, there's a ton of information in this episode, including tales from his 100K World Championship race, how strategically different the 100K distance is from the 50K, Matt's goals and race schedule for 2017 (some epic races planned), and Matt, Julia, and Tim all share their workouts of the week.

    NOTES (from both episodes):

    • Born to Run
    • Ann Trason
    • Alberto Salazar

#19: Coach Flaherty is back! Part 1... Dec 09, 2016
    Show notes

    Coach Flaherty drops by again!

Tons of information from the coach this week, and that includes Matt's unique backstory: Engineering degree, law school, law practice, and giving all that up to become a professional runner and coach - only to get injured right off the bat.

We also talk a lot about attitude, how important it is to control what you can control and let the chips fall where they may.

The episode ran a bit long, so this is part one of what will be a two-part interview (part two is coming next week). Some references below from the episode.

    NOTES:

    • Anatomy for Runners, highly recommended by Coach Flaherty.
    • Renato Canova, an Italian running coach that Flaherty cites frequently.
    • Comrades Marathon - good lord.

Julia then talks about trail running, along with some tips and gear that keeps her hitting the dirt.

Finally, we end the show by talking about FOOD. We all share our favorite nutritious foods, along with (the more-fun-to-talk-about) foods that are "bad for you."

    NOTES:

    • Erin talks about the BibRave Shakeout run that's taking place before the Honolulu Marathon, and you can find more details on her blog, Erin Runs Around.
    • For the record, they're called "MALASADAS" and, holy crap, they are GOOD.
    • Here's where Tim got a lot of the info about one of his favorite nutritious foods - Pacific Salmon. The Atlantic and the World Wildlife Federation
    • Here's the Oatmeal article that started it all (Runner's World)

#16: The weakness of winning, the power of habits, and running behind the scenes Nov 17, 2016
    Show notes

    BibRave Podcast, Episode 16 - we're back!!

Sorry to have missed last week, but we're back this week with a great show. Julia and Tim talk about the power of habits and how they can set you up for easier success, we talk about winning and losing and what both mean to different types of people, and we close by talking about the running industry behind the scenes.

Please forgive any awkward pauses or weak voice moments - Tim's voice was quite battered from an aggressive weekend going out with a bunch of race directors and vendors.

We also have a special guest sponsor this week, 2XU - makers of outstanding compression and performance gear!

They have some killer pre- and post-Thanksgiving sales, so definitely check them out at 2XU.com.

Here's one of their upcoming sales:

Cyber Week - 21st to 24th November (Monday to Thursday)

    • Spend and Save - Site Wide - Spend $50 & Get 20%, Spend $100 & Get 30%, Spend $150 & Get 40%
