    Show notes

Scott Dolly brings an important conversation to the Better Human Project this week about filtering information, chasing greatness, and maintaining both physical and mental wellbeing.

In short, our pursuits don’t have to define – or destroy – us. We can find ways to work toward greatness in a manner that is sustainable.

If you don’t know Scott Dolly, you should. He’s a world class body worker, healer, the CEO & founder of Evolution Human Performance and Rehabilitation – a sports performance and outpatient rehab clinic in Winchester, VA – and an all around epic human.

In this episode we dive into specifics about our physiology, posture, health, and movement practices along with philosophical questions around mindset, grit, mental health, and sustainable practices.

BHP 048: California Fire Support + Be Better Do Better Highlights Nov 20, 2018
    Show notes

We’re deviating from our regularly scheduled interviews this week to bring you a special episode focusing on the deadliest fires in California history.

Be Better and Do Better isn’t just a tag line here at the Better Human Project. Being and doing better is ingrained in our personal and team values and this Thanksgiving week, with all that has transpired recently, we’re feeling compelled to use the Better Human Project platform to do just that – be and do better for our fellow humans.

BHP co-founder Ryland Hormel is a San Francisco native and he’s taking the mic this week – along with our audio engineer Josh Crowther – to share some local perspective on the scope of the devastation caused by these still burning fires in a high-production quality episode that we think you’ll appreciate.

We’re getting involved, and giving you an option do the same if you’d like. Given that this is Thanksgiving week, what better way to show our gratitude for our own blessings and help those who need our assistance.

    Be Better & Do Better

This episode also features a few soundbites from some previous Better Human Project podcast episodes including business and brand building master Dan McInerny, best-selling author and US Army veteran Josh Mantz, musician manager Jeff Castelaz, record executive Maria Egan, and professional surfer Cheyne Magnusson. Links to their full interviews are below.

Enjoy the show and let us know your thoughts. We love your input & feedback.

    BHP Episode #48: Show Notes

    • 50,00 people have been evacuated after the Camp Fire started near Paradise, CA. over 10,000 structures have been completely destroyed and over 70 people have lost their lives.
    • We feel it’s the duty of the Better Human Project to call attention to such a devastating tragedy.
    • Jeff Castelaz points out that we are not put on this earth to be busy and get wrapped up in societies pace. We are here to connect and help each other.
    • Josh Mantz reminds us that being left to suffer alone can destroy a persons soul and it takes courage to extend a helping hand.
    • Maria Egan poignantly tells us to let go and give it away. Whether it’s money or time or compassion. Don’t hold on to what you have if you can afford to help someone else with it.
    • Dan McInerny reflects on the importance of setting the example of your life at home. Practicing what you preach and passing that down to the next generation is one of the greatest responsibilities we all have.
    • Cheyne Magnusson teaches us to show and give more empathy. If we all took the time to put ourselves in someone else’s shoes the world would truly be a much better place.

BHP 047: Jason Redman | Overcome and Lead Always Nov 13, 2018
    Show notes

Jason Redman is a retired Navy SEAL, and the author of one of my favorite books, The Trident: The Forging and Reforging of a Navy SEAL Leader.

The book is an incredible study in leadership and accountability, but also tells Jason’s gripping story of surviving a firefight in which he was shot 7 time by an enemy machine gun, including one that entered his face, shattered his jaw, and exited through his nose.

Fast forward a few dozen surgeries, the founding of his clothing company, Wounded Wear, the publishing of his book, and Jay is still leading – by writing, speaking, and helping other wounded veterans through his Overcome Academy.

I’ve had the great pleasure to connect with Jay recently and a few weeks ago we sat down in his home in Virginia Beach to record this conversation about Jay’s two favorite topics: overcoming and leading always.

This episode is laced with gems on self-deception, the ego, leadership, parenting, overcoming adversity and much more. I know you’ll enjoy this one. Let me know your biggest takeaways from Jay.

    Show Notes

    • Self deception is a dangerous road to go down. Fully owning your mistakes is the only path to moving forward.
    • Others won’t follow you as a leader unless they see you can lead yourself.
    • Effective leadership is built on experience and credibility.
    • No leader ever feels satisfied with the knowledge they hold. This is the shadow/burden of leaders
    • Jason’s advice to those who put success over the needs of their family: “from a guy who laid there dying, you don’t think about any of that other stuff. You think about your family.”
    • Parenting and leadership advice: Know when to bite your tongue. Getting it right vs. being right
    • Pace yourself through life. Keep some energy in the tank to be prepared for what Jay calls a “life ambush.” A moment that alters the trajectory of your life.
    • Will you be ready?
    • Write your mission statement. Use it to drive your actions. If you died today would people talk about you doing the things on your mission statement?
    • The Pentagon of Performance:
      • Physical Leadership
      • Mental Leadership
      • Emotional Leadership
      • Social Leadership
      • Spiritual Leadership
    • Lead Always and Overcome all

        • Don’t mentally quit
    • Push yourself into discomfort. Without that experience, when you become uncomfortable, you’re less prepared to overcome obstacles.
    • Don’t be a sore loser. Give your all, at all times, and there’s nothing to be sore about.

    BHP 046: Scott McGee | Strength is a Choice Nov 06, 2018
    Show notes

This week on the Better Human Project, we’ve got a powerful conversation about grit, character, will, & the decision to choose strength with father, husband, law enforcement professional, and peaceful warrior, Scott McGee.

    STRENGTH IS A CHOICE

Physical strength is great, but this statement – like this conversation with Scott – applies far beyond the physical.

Something I’ll never forget from Scott: “Littering is a test of character”.

To me, no statement better summarizes what Scott is all about.

It’s a twist on the Buddhist saying “how you do anything is how you do everything.”

    Strength is a choice.

The host of The Sisu Way podcast, Scott reveals the trying life experiences that led to his embracing of the sisu way – including the passing of his father and birth of his first son – within the same week.

As Scott says: Health is Wealth. Vulnerability is Strength. Strength is a Choice. You are the Master of your Fate. You are the Captain of your Soul. Be Unconquerable!

Episode 046: Scott McGee Show Notes:

    • Appreciate your belongings. They aren’t just things or stuff. They’re extensions of who you are, what you do and why you’re here.
    • How we do anything is how we do everything. Preparation, research, planning, respect.
    • Be vulnerable and share with your loved ones. Scott’s father died writing a letter to his unborn grandchild. Never take the moment you have now for granted.
    • Through unbeatable odds, Scott’s son Connors chose strength, survived and inspired Scott’s Sisu Way journey
    • Scott’s career in law enforcement: empathy, humility, and the human desire for connection
    • Nature of Law enforcement is being exposed to human trauma, daily.
    • Public service professionals(Police, Firefighters, EMT’s, Doctors, Nurses) are asked to bear witness to the worst of our human experience. Where is the discussion around proper management of stress?
    • Change your perspective / position in a traumatic memory.
    • Use routine cues in your life to trigger down-regulating. Box breathing at red lights.
      • Use a 1 part inhale 2 part exhale breath to handle stress in the moment. As soon as you feel it creep in.
    • Be a lighthouse. Bring empathy to those in more unfortunate circumstances.
    • Strength is choice. (Requires awareness)
      • Knowing how and when to dive in or pull back from a situation. Yelling at your kids etc.
    • Be & Do Better:
      • Be in appreciation, not expectation.
      • Make a conscious effort to make a positive impact in the people around you.

BHP 045: Navy SEAL Commander Mark Divine on Developing Unbeatable Minds and Leaders Oct 30, 2018
    Show notes

This week on the Better Human Project podcast, we’re talking to former Navy SEAL commander, SEALFIT founder, author and all around amazing human Mark Divine.

We sat down with Mark a few weeks ago at SEALFIT HQ in Carlsbad, CA between our stops in SD & LA to talk about Mark’s pillars for leadership, growth, overcoming adversity and of course, developing an unbeatable mind.

If you’ve read F*ck Your Feelings, you may remember my crucible experience at SEALFIT from the preface of the book. That was 2012, and Mark has had a major impact on my life, so it was really special to have the opportunity to sit down with him for this conversation.

Really excited to share this one with you. Check out the great stuff we cover:

Mark Divine | Episode #45 Show Notes

    • SEALFIT Crucible training mirrors Navy seal bootcamp to push you past your physical, emotional and spiritual limit. Utilizing teamwork, selflessness, teaching humility, and letting go of ego.
    • A lone wolf isn’t as strong a pack. Start from the WE and let WE drive how the I contributes in the most powerful way.
    • 2 ways Mark learned humility:
      • Long times spent in nature. Learn from the balance in our natural environment and respect your place in it.
      • Zen training. Rank doesn’t matter. Seniority demands respect for the knowledge they hold but doesn’t mean they are better than you. They rely on you as much as you rely on them
    • Hard makes us strong and easy makes us weak
    • A crucible event exposes you to an objective view of potential psychological and emotional ruts
    • America is trapped in ethnocentrism which makes us weak by not showing compassion for all humans
    • Unbeatable mind is trying to cultivate world centric way to honor our mother earth and take action to move society in a positive direction
    • Self mastery precedes service
    • Holographic leadership – knowing what role to take in your team and leading in all directions. Be clear with your objectives but humble enough to know you don’t have all the answers. Leave space to bring out the answers from your team.
    • Make your vision crystal clear to attract and retain the best individuals who align with your team. Vision is the spiritual and energetic force behind any organization.
    • Principles of an Unbeatable Organization:
      • Clear vision
      • Holographic leadership
      • Trust and Transparency
      • Skillful Communication
      • Truthfulness
      • Multiple Perspectives
      • Care and concern at a world centric level
    • Insight meditation can give you a witnessing perspective to your consciousness. Give yourself the space to find what your true feelings are about the direction of your life. Give yourself the time. This process isn’t fast or easy.
    • Feed the courage wolf in your heart. Starve the fear wolf in your head. Lead from the heart.
    • Kokoro – Connect your heart and mind
    • Big 4 skills to help maintain peak performance:
      • Control the breath (Box breathing)
      • Positivity (Tuned in to self reflection)
      • Connection with Imagery (Think outcomes)
      • Micro-task (Present in the moment)
    • After enlightenment you still have to take out the self trash. If you’re an asshole and meditate for 20 years you’ll still be an asshole without doing the work on yourself.
    • Busyness is a concept you can take control of with self mastery.
    • Be Better Do Better:
      • Slow the fuck down and work on yourself. Box breathing and spending time in silence are a great way to start.
      • Be clear about your vision and break it down into micro goals you can do all day everyday.

    Burpees For Veterans

As you heard in the episode, Mark and his team have something really special going on this Veteran’s Day – Sunday November 11th. Some notes from Mark:

    • Our team is attempting to break the the world record for the most burpees by a mixed team in 24 hours.
    • We want to CRUSH the current record of 14,000 burpees by doing 22,000 burpees to raise awareness and funds for veterans with post-traumatic stress.
    • That’s 1,000 Burpees for each of the 22 veterans that take their lives daily due to post-traumatic stress.
    • My non-profit, The Courage Foundation, has a mission to change this by putting veterans with PTS through 18-month integrated training programs that foster post-traumatic growth.
    • There are 2 Ways that you can support us, and in typical SEALFIT style they are both fun
      • The first is to DONATE to Team Courage and cheer us on live.
      • The second is to JOIN IN, FUNDRAISE and do burpees with us individually or as a team over Veterans Day Weekend.
    • All the details are at http://www.burpeeworldrecord.com/ – LINK IN SHOW NOTES
    • Mark and I hope you’ll join us to help veterans recover and thrive; all proceeds will go towards the cause. They fought for us. Now let’s fight for them together.

BHP 044: Caroline Burckle | Olympic Medalist on Purpose, Identity, and Commitment Oct 23, 2018
    Show notes

This week, we’ve got an insightful conversation with 2008 Olympic medalist Caroline Burckle.

Caroline dives into the commitment and mindset necessary to perform and prevail at the highest levels.

She also talks candidly about the perils of that singular focus – the lesser discussed downside to win-at-all-costs mindsets and tying our identity to our times, scores, and/or numbers.

We also look at RISE Athletes, a program Caroline co-founded with fellow Olympian Rebecca Soni for Olympic athletes to serve as mentors to young athletes to help them successfully navigate these very issues.

If you’re interested in success in sport, mental health, or life, this interview has some powerful lessons for us all.

Episode 044: Show Notes w/ Caroline Burckle:

    • Achieving Olympic success can produce complicated, personal, emotional battles. The games are over, now what?
    • How can we acknowledge and understand the sacrifice and commitment it takes to become a world class athlete and Olympian?
    • It’s easy to lose your identity when your life revolves around times, medals and records.
    • Finding the true source of guilt or shame, what you’re attached/holding on to, is the path to any healing journey. Seeking professional help is not a bad thing.
    • Rise Athletes provides a path to purpose and identity for retired olympians in mentoring young athletes and students
    • Mentoring is an outlet to shed perspective on your own actions through observing and coaching someone through their own decision making.
    • Be comfortable with the journey. Understand that feelings will ebb and flow as you find what you’re holding on to, grip it tight, understand and then let it go.
    • Hold space for people. Give them the room in your life. Listen to them, feel with them, share your time, share your love.

BHP 043: Ben Goertzel | Artificial Intelligence, Robots, and The Coming Singularity Oct 16, 2018
Show notes This week’s guest has a huge say in the future of the world. He’s Ben Goertzel and he’s one of the world’s leading researchers in AI, robotics, and the technological singularity. His most famous work – Sophia the robot developed through Hanson Robotics – has been featured on Jimmy Fallon, and parodied on HBO’s Silicon Valley, among many other appearances and controversies (she famously said she’d destroy humans at SxSW in 2016) This conversation with Ben provides insight and perspective into what is being developed, what is possible, and what might be coming. While I enjoyed Ben’s passion and genuine care for humanity, I have mixed feelings: skepticism, even fear, comfort, excitement…but as Ben pointed out, this will happen independently of our feelings. (#fuckyourfeelings) I highly recommend giving it a listen. And if you want more answers in this area, shoot us your questions. We’ll be interviewing more experts in this field….

Episode #43 Show Notes with Ben Goertzel:

    • What AI researchers say is ideal scenario for AI and the human-technological singularity
    • The root of human skepticism and fear of AI and our future in general: radical technological and social changes are happening in one lifetime rather than over generations.
    • What does it really mean to be human?
    • Consciousness uploading is much closer than you think: Destructive vs. Non-destructive uploading of our minds into computers (one of these involves slicing our brains like deli meat and scanning into a computer)
    • “This will happen independently of your thoughts or feelings about it happening”
    • AI consciousness won’t be born out of struggle like humans. We can program them to be curious and caring, (hopefully) creating AI that – unlike humans – is NOT programmed to conquer all.
    • Artificial Intelligence vs. General Intelligence
    • Style is in the eye of the beholder: How does a plexiglass cranium sound?
    • Brain-Computer interfacing that taps into a global brain cyborg creating a superhuman general intelligence
    • What will you choose when given the opportunity to have unlimited intelligence? Will you upload your consciousness to the world super brain and lose part of yourself or stay a legacy human?
    • “Flipping the switch” won’t be a binary act. The switch has already been turned on. AI is all around us
    • As humans we can’t change our mental wiring (quickly). AI’s have the ability to identify shortcomings and reprogram themselves in real time
    • The questions still vexing Ben moving forward

Lems Shoes founder Andrew Rademacher wants you to know fashion-focused footwear is wreaking havoc on our feet, knees, hips and back – and more importantly he wants to educate the world on what we should look for in our shoes.

As a college pentathlete, Andrew was wearing 10 different pairs of shoes at every track meet, and none of them fit the human foot properly. So – not unlike another famous shoemake (NIke’s Phil Knight), Andrew took it upon himself to build a performance based shoe that actually fit the human foot.

His journey from college athlete to shoe maker and entrepreneur is full of lessons on footwear that heals instead of harms, developing winning teams, reaching passionate fans, and building a thriving business.

If you’re a shoe-wearing human with feet, listen up – you might learn something valuable.
