BHP Shorts 008: Distortion of Perception Apr 15, 2019
    Show notes

Our own self-esteem may be distorted by our partial, and therefore, distorted perceptions.

From Timothy Gallway’s 1974 book, The Inner Game of Tennis, the cycle goes like this:

    1. Perception
    2. Action
    3. Result
    4. Self-esteem.

It starts with distorted perceptions, as perception is the foundation of our pursuits.

Think about it. We see something that interests us or seems like a worthwhile pursuit, and then these perceptions create the basis of the actions that we undertake to make the thing our reality.

Make no mistake about it, everything we think we see is merely perception.

    Distorted perceptions are nothing new…

We’ve ALWAYS had partial – and therefore distorted – perceptions of others’ lives.

Be it friends, family, co-workers, and especially those we admire or look up to; i.e. our heroes: athletes, philanthropists, leaders, etc. – we’ve never truly known the totality of their reality.

Yet we look at them and say: “I want that life” or “I want to be like that person” and then we plan a course of action that we think will take us “there”.

    Here’s the problem:

We lacked the complete picture from the outset. Our path has now been plotted with faulty information.

So our perfect plan, even if executed flawlessly, was created with incomplete information and will result in an outcome that is different from our expectation.

This is what happens when our original perception is distorted.

Since we’re humans who tie our results to our identity and self worth, these distorted results lead to chinks in our self-esteem. We begin to think there is something wrong with us because our result doesn’t match our original perception…

So our self-esteem or self-confidence takes a hit when we attain these distorted results..

    And then…

Well, you’re going to have to listen to the podcast for the rest.

Tune in for a full explanation of the distortions that pervade our lives and how we can alter our mental approach to accurately prioritize the proper actions and untangle our self-worth from our results.

    BHP Shorts 007: Essentialism Apr 11, 2019
    Show notes

Essentialism is the disciplined pursuit of less, the practice of identifying the signal in the sea of noise, separating the vital few from the trivial many.

By mastering this practice we can become masters of productivity and time management, simply because we know how and where to focus our energy and efforts.

Lesson 1 in this episode, is the “Don’t Bury The Lead” exercise. Tune in to see how well you do 😉

    Essentialism Vs. Non Essentialism

    Non-Essentialists

    • Pays attention to the loudest voice
    • Hears everything being said
    • Is overwhelmed by all the information

    Essentialists

    • Pay attention to the signal in the noise
    • Hear what is not being said
    • Scans to find the essence of the information

Essentialism In Practice: Huckberry Case Study

Huckberry is a rapidly growing curator of outdoor and active lifestyle gear that equips and inspires __ for the activities they love most.

Essentialism is required reading at Huckberry, and we sat down with Executive Director of Marketing and Partnerships, Ben O’Meara for look behind the curtain to see how they’ve been able to enjoy so much success so quickly.

Part of that conversation included an in-depth look at how Huckberry practices the art of Essentialism in the design, marketing, and the day to day operations for their high performing organization. We’ve included that clip in this short podcast episode.

    Multitaskers = “Suckers For Irrelevancy”

For those still not convinced that less, but better is the way to go, here are two studies from Stanford University that show how multitasking decreases productivity and memory retention.

According to the researchers, there is no such thing as multitasking, it’s actually constant task switching or juggling. This practice results in less efficient work output and even lowers scores on memory tests due to a decreased ability to organize information for recall.

The researchers concluded that those who engage in multitasking are “suckers for irrelevancy”.

One more important note, the more we do this, the more we program our brains to seek these irrelevant, trivial noises rather than focusing on the vital few signals. **cough, constant email checking and social media scrolling, cough **

BHP Shorts 006: Dishonesty Stems From Fear Apr 08, 2019
    Show notes

    Dishonesty stems from fear.

I challenge you to investigate your own expressions, to think about the times you are, or have been, dishonest.

Think about the times you’ve held back, played small, or flat out held in your truth(s)

    Why do we do it?

I’ll argue that – unless we’re sinister beings, which I’m assuming you are not – the answer is fear.

Fear of what the truth might mean.

    Fear of not being understood.

Fear of not liking the outcome.

    Fear of conflict or confrontation.

    Fear the recipient’s reaction.

We could go on and on…

If we have no fear of the outcome, we have no reason to be dishonest in our actions.

When we allow fear to dictate our actions, words or expressions, we fail to be our authentic selves.

Instead of yielding to fear, let’s give voice to what lies within.

By holding back, we remain partial.

Those who overcome their fear, giving voice to what lies within, experience authentic connection, truth, love, and yes, sometimes pain.

But when we prevent ourselves from being authentic, we remove any possibility of being whole.

It’s not only our choice of words that belie our truest selves…

These fears influence what we wear, what we say, what we do, and how we move through the world.

We are whole when we pursue our authentic path. To cheat ourselves of this existence is heartbreaking.

All progress start with the truth.

And this simple statement, all progress start with the truth, is the spark that can ignite a blazing inferno of growth.

If we’re courage enough to confront that which we fear, if we’re willing to explore WHY we feel compelled to be dishonest, we have endless opportunities for growth.

A lack of honesty – with ourselves, or others – stalls our development.

Where – and WHY – are we being dishonest?

All progress starts with the truth.

BHP 061: Corey Tufts | Golden Gate Organics Apr 04, 2019
    Show notes

Want to know the real reason organic and Fair Trade produce is more expensive?

Tune in to this week’s episode of the BHP with Golden Gate Organics founder Corey Tufts to hear the truth about produce pricing, how technology is changing the food system and what we, as consumers, need to know to make the informed choices about what we put in our bodies.

Show Notes w/ Corey Tufts of Golden Gate Organics

    • Corey’s first exposure to the local food movement came while he was stationed in Maine during his time in the Coast Guard.
    • After returning and being stationed in Alameda, he thought why not bring the local food concept home with him to San Francisco.
    • Not a CSA, Corey describes GGO as a specialized delivery service bringing the freshest, high quality, organic produce to their customers every week.
    • Tune in to hear how technology is changing the way farmers manage their crops and how that trickles down through the supply chain.
    • One of the main reasons organic and fair trade products are more expensive than conventional is the cost of paying a living wage to farm employees.
    • Why aren’t products grown/made in the USA certified fair trade?
    • Corey works on educating students in schools about what produce is and where it comes from.
    • On crop spraying: If a bug won’t eat it why would I want to?
    • Fun fact: There’s no way to stop ear mites in the organic corn world. That’s why when you see organic corn in the store the tips will be cut off.
    • Organic farmers focus heavily on crop rotation. This rotation rehabilitates the soil and prepares it for the next crop going in requiring less, if any, fertilizer in the long run.
    • Anti-oxidants fight free radicals in your body. The deeper a color is in a tomato, for example, the more antioxidants, and natural defenses that tomato has. Think of the difference between a Subway tomato and a organic locally grown tomato.
    • If you fail to plan, plan to fail. If you want to eat healthy, put some forethought into what you’re going to eat this week.
    • Corey brought some organic blueberries and gold nugget mandarins to the recording. Listen to us try to describe how delicious they are
    • What does healthy mean to Corey? Eat mostly produce and drink mostly water. Moderation is key.

BHP Shorts 005: The Impermanence Of Life Apr 01, 2019
    Show notes

The impermanence of life is what makes it all so beautiful.

I walked through the woods during a recent ice storm, marveling at the crystalline formations encasing every inch of available branch, transforming the forest into a sparkling wonderland. It was magic.

As morning turned to afternoon, ice shifted to rain and temperatures rose above freezing, I realized none of this would be here when my wife came home from work.

I returned to the woods snapping photo after photo, capturing as much of the scenery as I could, when it hit me – if it always looked like this, it wouldn’t be nearly as fascinating.

It’s the transitory nature of these moments that makes them so captivating.

If the autumn colors remained for 52 weeks instead of five, would we appreciate them as much?

If spring, or Christmas came but never went, we would have nothing to anticipate.

It’s not just our own mortality that makes life so beautiful, but the fleeting existence of everything we see, hear, feel, touch and know.

    There are no ordinary moments.

What can you appreciate a little more than usual today?

BHP 060: Carl Paoli | Maximize Life Mar 27, 2019
    Show notes

This week’s show with Carl Paoli is about building a personal brand and driving your own philosophies into what you put out in the world.

What excites me most about this conversation is the unspoken prerequisite for achieving the above, which is personal accountability and responsibility, aka complete ownership of our actions and choices.

Not only is Carl a world class athlete – he’s an Olympic level gymnast who founded Gymnastics WOD and wrote the best-selling book Free+Style – he’s also a world class thinker and thought leader.

After years of having Carl on our “guest wish-list” we caught up with him in San Francisco for this epic conversation about bringing a heightened intention and awareness to everything we do: from movement to business, from marketing to leading.

    Enjoy.

Show Notes: Episode #60 w/ Carl Paoli

    • “If you have $1000 in the bank and don’t know how to manage $1000, you have no business having $2000.”
    • Finding clarity is key to understanding what you stand for and how to drive that through your life/business. Clarity takes time. Doing the reps is always going to be part of the process. Keep asking yourself the important questions and act in your own best interests. “It’s a never ending story”
    • Carl isn’t creating a business to solve people’s problems. He’s creating a business where he gives them the tools to get to their own solutions.
    • Marketing strategies like a handstand picture have a bit of modern day magic behind them. The magician reveals (some of) his secrets.
    • We’re all influencers. Influence yourself first and then put that self work out into action in your life and the life of those around you.
    • Entertainment means holding focus.
    • Carl’s freestyle philosophy works on getting to a point where you can accept and respect all styles. All ways of of feeling and acting.
    • The answer’s are in the book. The book is your body. Listen to what your body tells you.

BHP Shorts 003: Grow Or Die Mar 18, 2019
    Show notes

In 1975 Kodak invented, and patented, the very technology that would eventually put them out of business – the digital camera.

Despite their invention of advanced technology, Kodak bet on a future that resembled the past by doubling down on film and ink rather than adapting their business model to accommodate this new technology.

This was a fatal decision. They filed for bankruptcy in 2012.

Kodak could’ve been the leader, the largest player in the world in digital photography… instead, they’re as obsolete as the dinosaurs.

Today’s lesson on the BHP Shorts is simple: when we stop growing and evolving, we start dying.

He not busy being born is busy dying.

This quote from Nobel prize winning poet Bob Dylan sums it up perfectly.

The universal arc of life bears witness to the fact the beginning of an organism’s decline coincides with the end of it’s growth. Grow or die.

The thought exercise, should you choose to accept: In what areas of your life have you stopped growing? How can you continue to develop in those (all) areas? How can you make yourself your resilient? More benefited by changing nature of the universe.

BHP 058: Mike Day | Navy SEAL Shot 27 Times and Kept Fighting Mar 14, 2019
    Show notes

The title says it all… In 2007, Mike Day showed up for work like he had for more than 2 decades when he was ambushed in a small room by 4 enemy combatants with automatic weapons and grenades.

Despite being shot 27 times, he stayed focused, cleared the room, secured the women and children inside the house, then walked to the medivac helicopter that took him to safety.

We talk a lot about high performance, overcoming adversity, mental tenacity, commitment, and total human effort… today’s guest on the Better Human Project embodies those qualities and more.

    Meet Mike Day.

Episode #58 Show Notes w/ Mike Day

    • Mike attributes his survival during a gunfight where he was shot 27 times, to training.
    • It’s become his belief that you can train in and out of any portion of your life. Not happy where you are? Train out of it.
    • A neighbor suggested to Mike when he was a kid to join the SEALs. At that point Mike was the ringleader of all the kids you don’t want your kids to hang out with. The navy provided him with a way out of that life without getting hurt or thrown in jail.
    • After recovering from his injuries, Mike became a non-medical case manager for SOCOM.
    • At first, the work was therapeutic. But after years of working with different veterans the weight of all the injuries and illnesses started to affect Mike’s own well being.
    • Post Traumatic Stress and Traumatic Brain injuries aren’t isolated within the military community. 30% of adults in america are on some type of anti anxiety or depression pill. Active duty veterans only account for about 1% of the population. There’s plenty of,”hold my beer, watch this” out there.
    • Mike learned about the significance of gut health after going through a very dark period in his life. Without proper gut bacteria your body can’t digest food. Once you’re in that position you lose access to all of the nutrients your brain and body need to function properly.
    • While working at the Care Coalition Mike was able to work with a lot of different therapy methods like EDMR that he was able to experience first hand and change his mind on their effectiveness.
    • The hardest part of recovery for Mike was realizing the effect it had on the people around him. Especially his daughters.
    • Within 6 months he was back in the gym on the treadmill and doing light workouts. Since then he’s run iron man’s tough mudders and marathons.
    • Best advice you’ve ever been given? Learn what not to do during different circumstances in your life.
    • What does it mean to you to be strong? Make your own plan and drive that plan on your own convictions without influence from the outside.
    • Be Better/Do better: Know what drives you, move in that direction and stop listening to the voices that say you can’t. You are what you say you are and if you don’t like it then train out of it.
