BHP 063: Michael Hill | Georgetown Sports Performance May 23, 2019
    Show notes

Building something bigger than us requires vision, focus, patience, the right team, communication, and a relentless commitment to continuing education – just to name a few.

Master Strength Coach and Director of Sports Performance at Georgetown University Michael Hill has demonstrated all of these qualities as he has built Georgetown’s program over the last 15 years, and today, he joins us on the BHP to share some of his wisdom with us.

As director of sports performance, Coach Hill oversees 29 TEAMS – yes, 29 teams – at Georgetown University and he’s making a positive impact on thousands of student athletes while building a program and organization that emphasizes doing things the right way.

We talk about how he’s built the program with only a handful of coaches who had to make due with outdated facilities into one that features a first class staff, elite facilities, and a leading role in their field. Coach Hill’s role requires leadership in multiple layers: from developing his coaching staff and their interns, to all the student athletes they collective are charged with molding and shaping.

These are responsibilities that Coach Hill embraces with his whole being and I’m honored to call him a friend and chat with him on the Better Human Project.

    • Mike is the strength training head coach for Georgetown.
    • Starting as an intern in 2004 he has worked his way up through the ranks and has overseen tremendous growth in facilities and programs.
    • Listen to how important human connection and being strong, compassionate individuals is to the Georgetown programs.
    • Mike looks for coaches and athletes that do the right thing when no one is looking.
    • Every workout with a team is a learning opportunity and chance to impart a lesson that applies outside of the weight room or outside of the sport.
    • Seeking knowledge through books or podcasts is one of those joys of life. Understanding how to internalize and implement those learnings is a skill we can always develop more.
    • “Politicking with a 4 year old is like trying to teach a dog the concept of tomorrow”
    • Mike believes setting an example is one of the most important aspect of his job. If students/athletes see him reading a book, exercising, exchanging pleasantries with strangers, coming in early, and being prepared he hopes this gives them a path to follow.

BHP Shorts 016: Stop Reading and Implement May 20, 2019

    Books aren’t trophies.

The trophies come from making use of the knowledge contained within the books.

Nobody cares how many books we’ve read this week, this month, or this year.

What truly matters is what we’re doing with the information we’re consuming.

To that end, consider what is more important to you: finishing a book or acting on the “a-ha” moment and making progress in some area of life?

What are we chasing: making progress or looking like we’re making progress?

If we’re reading these books for development in some form, we must implement the wisdom shared with us in order to actually realize the benefit. When we encounter these nugget we’re looking for, put the book down and take action.

BHP Shorts 014: Make The Hard Choice May 13, 2019
    Show notes

It’s human nature to seek pleasure and avoid pain.

This universal law is at the foundation of every choice we make.

Too often, we opt for immediate pleasure in order to avoid discomfort in the short term.

Problem is, what we want most is rarely aligned with what we want right now.

To say there are only two types of people – those who choose the path of least resistance and those who choose the hard path – is too binary.

The human experience is more complex than that.

But, it’s worth remembering that how we do anything is how we do everything.

So here’s what I’m asking you to think about:

Do you choose the easiest path, the path of least resistance? Do you let yourself off the hook? Do you have a tendency to choose what you want right now over what you want most?

Or do you seek the more difficult path? Do you seek the choice that offers growth opportunities and likely leads to that which you want most?

Those who seem most fulfilled in their lives have a habit of making the tough choice.

Those who seem most stuck, frustrated, and unfulfilled, seem to have a habit of choosing the easier path…

Have the difficult conversations. Tell the folks you love how you truly feel. Sit in silence instead of cueing up the next video, podcast, song or book so you can listen to the voice within you.

Make the hard choice. When we observe this choice from the witness perspective – or 30,000 foot view – there really is no choice to be made.

P.S. The advantages of making the hard choice are not just my observation – the famous Stanford marshmallow study lends scientific validity to the hypothesis that developing a disciplined habit of delaying gratification leads to greater success throughout one’s life.

BHP Shorts 013: Seek What They Sought May 09, 2019
    Show notes

Don’t do what your heroes did. Instead, seek what they sought.

The universe doesn’t need you to be another copycat. The universe needs you to be your unique self and to bring your own unique value.

That’s precisely what they did, and what enabled them to stand out and succeed.

Rather than doing what they did, seek what they sought.

Why did they take that action? What did they see ahead of the curve? What was their real play?

These questions will help lead us to the crucial point that is actually missed when we blindly copy them and do what they did.

They had success because they saw a gap, filled a void and disrupted the status quo by providing innovative solutions. When we copy and do what they did, we fail to hit the mark on that most crucial point – innovation, disruption and solving a problem. If they’ve already done, we’re not solving a new problem.

What were they seeking when they did the thing you know them for doing?

These are the better questions that lead to better actions for us to consider in an effort to get the results that lead to true happiness and fulfillment – which, not coincidentally often lead to the more superficial things we think we want (money, attention, etc.)

BHP Shorts 012: Making It Up As You Go May 06, 2019
    Show notes

“Traveller, there is no path, the path is made by walking.”

Like comfort food for the mind and soul, this passage served as a comforting reminder for me during many uncomfortable days and sleepless nights, just as it has for many others coloring outside the lines of a “normal” life path.

But on March 6th 2018, these words transformed from comforting passage into a life affirming beacon.

On that night, I heard one of the most successful musicians of all time admit, that for the last 50 years, he’d been making it all up.

There was no path, no predetermined series of steps for him to follow in order to arrive at his desired destination. There was no timeline, no schedule, no blueprint.

There was only a burning desire and time.

As a young man, he recognized the life ahead of him was blank page, ready to accept any story he wished to imprint upon it.

Admittedly, he had no clue how he would make it happen.

The obstacles were daunting, nearly insurmountable.

He remained undeterred, committed to himself and his dreams.

He practiced, showed up, worked his ass off, and overcame any obstacle thrown his way for a decade before finally getting his shot – all the while, flying blind and making it up as he went.

Bruce Springsteen is far from the only one with a story like this.

Pick your person – The Rock, Oprah, Richard Branson – not one has followed a predetermined path printed in a book sitting on a Guidance Counselor’s bookshelf.

If they had to make it up as they went along, why do we think it should or will be any different for each of us.

HINT: it won’t. Grab your hiking boots and machete and start walking traveller. The same blank page lies in front of each of us, just daring us to write on it.

    BHP Shorts 011: Don’t Work. CREATE. May 02, 2019
    Show notes

ALCHEMY / noun / the transformation of matter from base elements into gold or useful elixirs. A seemingly magical process of transformation, creation, or combination.

Imagine taking that mindset into every “work” day.

That’s precisely our aim when we replace the word “work” with the word “create”.

More than a simple exercise in semantics, this shift in perspective changes our approach to any task; from laying bricks, to making coffees or answering customer emails.

How would your work be altered if you brought this mindset to your trade?

    Don’t work. CREATE.

Create a masterpiece, create an experience, create a home, create a relationship or a legacy.

BHP Shorts 010: Are You Extraordinary or Ordinary? Apr 29, 2019
    Show notes

“Is this the best you can do?”

We’ve all seen the memes and taglines: “average averse”, “mediocrity sucks”, or “f*ck normal”.

I’m not knocking the message. In fact, I love the notion of striving to go above and beyond.

Above and beyond is the key. It’s about effort.

The sobering and unsexy reality of embodying this sentiment is far simpler – and far less appealing – than most believe.

Normal is, well, normal. Normal is ordinary.

Being extraordinary requires us to behave abnormally.

To behave normally would deliver normal, or average, results.

Indeed, the path to rising above normal, average, or mediocre unavoidably runs right through one simple question: “is this the best you can do?”

The way we answer that question determines where we fall on the ordinary <—-> extraordinary spectrum.

Ordinary people give mediocre efforts and produce average results. When asked “was this a total human effort?”, or “is the the very best you can do?”, the answer is usually no.

Extraordinary people, on the other hand, answer this question with a yes. This is the abnormal behavior required for extraordinary results – your best effort, all the time, every time, even – and especially – when nobody is watching.

My challenge to you, the seeker of better than average, is to make sure you answer this question in a way that makes you proud: “Is this the best you can do?”

Tune in to this BHP Short: Extraordinary vs. Ordinary for a powerful lesson on extraordinary resolve from a powerful human: powerlifting legend and successful businessman, coach & father Dave Tate.

BHP 062: Todd White | Meditation, Vulnerability and Our Birthright Innocence Apr 25, 2019
    Show notes

Todd White is all heart. He’s also a savvy leader and businessman.

His company, Dry Farm Wines has grown over 6000% in the last 2 years and is one of the fastest growing companies in the US. In this episode, we explore his unique leadership style and the radical departure from the normal work day that fuels the success of this rapidly growing organization.

It starts with a daily group meditation, includes a compressed work day (11am – 6pm), no work emails outside of those hours, no work emails on weekends, and unlimited vacation and unlimited expense accounts.

    How is this possible?

It’s all built on self-love, self-respect, respect for others, peace and simplicity. And meditation. Did we mention meditation?

This is just the tip of the iceberg. In addition to leadership and unconventional work/life balance, we also discuss pulling the mask off of masculinity, regaining our birthright innocence and self directed responsibility.

Todd White is a special human. He’s the master of peace, love, abundance, and simplicity and he’s one of those magnetic people that you want to be around as often as possible. Enjoy this hour with Todd.

    • DFW has grown 6,000% in the past few years. It’s one of the fastest growing private companies in the US. Todd explanation? Meditation. The “work” day begins at 10am with a one hour group meditation before the whole team starts work at 11am.
    • Building a team: a termination whether involuntary or voluntary is always the fault of management. You either hired wrong or failed to lead them in the right direction.
    • “Integrity is what we do when no one else knows.”
    • DFW employees have unlimited time off and unlimited expense accounts – as long as the requests you make for either are self respecting, respectful of colleagues and respectful of the organization.
    • Hear Todd talk about maintaining the integrity of a peaceful inbox and how he has set up the communication protocols for his team.
    • “People often times confuse being busy with being successful”
    • “Money should be the outcome of value that you’re creating not the reason you do something.”
    • Another leadership lesson: get out of the way of smart people. Enable the people on your team to excel.
    • Todd has changed his labeling of “work” to “create.” Work is something that’s arduous whereas creating is something beautiful.
    • Giving employees space to be vulnerable and express love is a powerful tool during the daily meditations.
    • The pinnacle of health for Todd is a peaceful mind.

BHP Shorts 009: Why SMART Goals Suck Apr 22, 2019
    Show notes

    SMART goals suck.

    Here’s what to do instead.

    Focus on ACTIONS, not Outcomes.

Researchers tell us only 20% of the population sets goals.

Of that 20%, only 30% successfully realize those goals.

That means 6% of the population sets and achieves their goals.

If the failure rate is 94%, maybe it’s the method, not the individual.

Maybe it’s because our formative education doesn’t teach us “open architecture” – the belief that each of us has the ability to design and create our lives into whatever we want.

Maybe it’s because the goal-setting lessons we do receive teach us to focus on results, rather than the actions required to become a human who produces those results.

Note the use of the word produces instead of gets.

Maybe SMART goals aren’t the way to realize the futures we want for ourselves.

Maybe it’s time we embrace AND TEACH process-focused approaches.

The way we spend our time consistently determines the trajectory of our lives.

Are your decisions, choices, and actions aligned with the outcomes (goals) you’re pursuing?

    Focus on ACTIONS, not outcomes.
