BHP Shorts 031: The Universe Is Lazy Aug 05, 2019
    Show notes

Resistance, in its many forms, awaits us all.

None of us will realize our best self without moving through or against resistance.

Even the universe itself experiences this phenomenon.

In fact, the laws of physics can be derived from the principle of least action which, roughly speaking, states that, of all the possible configurations that a system can have, or that it can follow, as it evolves in time, the one that is physically realized is the one that minimizes its action.

This fancy physics speak simply means that the universe, like humans, seeks the path of least resistance.

Yeah, the Universe is lazy. The desire to do as little as possible is universal.

So whenever you feel the weight of resistance, remember this:

    You’re not alone.

    Resistance affects us all.

It normal to feel this way.

It is even OK to FEEL this way.

    It’s OK to FEEL lazy.

Hell, it’s NORMAL to BE lazy.

This universal pattern is the norm.

The question is whether or not WE can accept being normal.

If we want to transcend normal, we must behave abnormally.

This requires us to overcome the aforementioned universal pathway of least action.

If our aim in life is to transcend normal we must remember that it is Normal, even OK to feel lazy, but it is not OK to BE lazy.

BHP Shorts 030: Self Love, Narcissism and The Masks We Wear Aug 01, 2019
    Show notes

It is human nature to wear the mask (or masks) that we think portray us in the best light.

Don’t think you wear masks? I call bullshit – we all do it.

Think about the “version” of you that you might present to your boyfriend or girlfriend’s parents the first time you meet them.

Got a big meeting with a potential investor, banker, or new client? If you’re like most people, you present to them what you think they want to see.

Have a social media account? I dare you tell you me the pictures of yourself that you post aren’t your favorites from a cluster of images.

Whether or not we do this is not the question.

The trick, the trick my friends is to realize that we all do this, and then to learn to see beyond the masks that we (and others) wear in order to see the truth.

Not every mask is sinister. Some masks helped us get through tough periods of our lives, but no longer serve us. Some masks are being worn without our knowledge.

I’ll teach my eyes to see beyond these walls in front of me.

As we begin to cultivate our ability to identify these masks, ask yourself:

    • What masks are we wearing – and WHY?
    • What masks are others wearing – and WHY?
    • What qualities do we need validated?
    • What are we hiding or literally masking?
    • Why can’t we be authentic in this situation?

As we begin to examine ourselves (and others), think in opposites:

A hyper masculine and overly confident man is almost assuredly insecure and seeking validation. The individual who presents an impenetrable, fearless character, has most likely been deeply wounded and is attempting to prevent this from happening again.

Here are more questions on which you can meditate:

    • How secure are you in your center/construct of who you are?
    • How resilient/anti-fragile is your self-image?
    • How would you characterize your self-image/self-love?
    • Is your self-love functional or dysfunctional?
    • What mask do you wear?
    • What qualities do you need validated?

Look at the people in your life:

    • What masks do they wear?
    • What qualities do they need validated by you &/or others?
    • Are they manipulating you or others to complete or buy into their own self-image?

More questions than answer today, but that’s OK. Interrogating our unconscious minds unlocks unlimited developmental potential, if we have the courage explore those edges honestly.

PRESS PLAY to tune in for this crucial conversation.

BHP Shorts 029: Beliefs Shape Behaviors Jul 29, 2019
    Show notes

What we believe shapes the way we behave, which in turn influences what we build.

The simplicity of this statement belies its profound impact on all we do. It applies to life, business, relationships, all of our practices (even our relationships with food, fitness, distractions – TV, entertainment, etc, etc

Here’s where it gets real, and slippery: to varying degrees, we all have self-limiting beliefs. We all have doubts, fears, and “stories” that we tell ourselves, i.e. what we believe.

The extent to which we give power to these beliefs (limiting or not) directly influences our choices, decisions and actions.

It impacts how we behave, how we perform, how and what we do, and of course, what we build – not just in our businesses, but the lives we build.

We all have baggage. We all have pasts, trauma, distractions, & interference.

We can carry it it with us and let it drag us down, or we can cut it loose.

Cut loose that which doesn’t serve us and instead, give voice – and power – to the positive and true qualities that make each of us who we are.

BHP Shorts 028: How Navy SEALs Overcome Fear & Anxiety Jul 24, 2019
    Show notes

How can I overcome my fears? How do you deal with anxiety? How can I clear my mind? How can I build more confidence? Tips to perform under pressure?

Without a doubt, some form of this question is the NUMBER ONE thing I’m asked in all my travels and interactions.

It’s a crucial question for all of us, as we must master our emotional selves if we are to realize the highest version of us.

So, while in Virginia Beach recently for a Better Human Workshop, I asked some of the highest performers I know – Navy SEALs – how they deal with these issues. After all, SEALs are widely regarded as one of the most disciplined, focused, and resilient communities around – otherwise they wouldn’t be the ones tasked with the highest-value, most difficult missions.

What follows are actionable strategies used by active and retired Navy SEALs to deal with fear or anxiety so they can stay focused and perform under the highest/most extreme pressure.

Contrary to what most might think, high performance is not about being fearless, regardless of what performance looks like for us.

It’s about respecting the situation, recognizing our own triggers, finding ways to stay calm/centered/focused, and trusting our training. (You have done the work to be prepared, right??)

Whether you’re a Navy SEAL, Olympic athlete, business exec, or anything in-between, human physiology and psychology is a constant governing dynamic, regardless of the pursuit. Those who enjoy any measure of success, do so because they embrace and exercise awareness of these systems, the discipline to properly prepare for performance and then curate their ability to remain focused throughout the event in order to realize the level of performance they demand.

PRESS PLAY to hear these actionable strategies from some powerful (but not fearless) performers.

BHP Shorts 027: Creative Process, Productivity, and 3 Lessons From Golf Jul 22, 2019
    Show notes

Despite the long title, this BHP Short holds true to our single thought format. Well, it is a single thought that meanders through several important topics, beginning with the creative process.

    The Creative Process

Given the freedom of time and space to play, my mind tends to assimilate and synthesize all of my experiences. Maybe you’ve experienced this during a long drive, mowing the grass, or as I did recently, during extended physical activity. (Ok, ok, golf isn’t the same as a marathon, but 3.5 hours is still longer than the average workout.)

While the creative process is not the same for everyone, I’ll argue that creators must suspend incoming information for periods of time in order to actually create. We explored this on a previous BHP Short, Create vs. Consume, linked below. What this process looks like varies with every type of individual, brain profile, personality, and creative outlet. Our processes are as unique to each of us as the work we produce, so we must be open to explore, experiment and find what works for each of us, even that means we don’t appear to be “working” from an outside perspective.

Productivity Isn’t Always What It Seems

See the last last line of the above section. Sometimes our highest value activity doesn’t look like work.

If Springsteen or Led Zeppelin write their best lyrics when they’re riding motorcycles or surfing, I want them surfing daily. It might not look like work, but then again, the art produce isn’t exactly “normal” or “average” either.

Just as it is with the creative process, our most productive uses of our time vary based on individual and the type of work that we’re doing. Regardless of personality or pursuit, one thing remains constant, focus on the actions required to get the results you’re charged with delivering. (Another BHP Short: Focus On Actions, Not Outcomes is linked below.)

Now, on to those lessons from the golf course. (The segway makes more sense when you listen to the podcast.)

3 Lessons From The Golf Course

    1. Play It As It Lies: As one of golf’s most fundamental rules, this tests and builds character as it teaches us to take responsibility for our actions, to make the best of any and every situation, to let past mistakes go and focus on the immediate present if we are to be at our best.
    2. Self-image. How we conduct ourselves in any environment says more about our character than how we perform.
    3. Play more. Easy enough, right? It doesn’t have to be golf. Play, have fun, and enjoy life. And if you want to get really good something, be prepared to accumulate the reps.
    4. BONUS lesson: Be grateful. Appreciate, don’t expect. Enjoy the outdoors and the company of good friends &/or family.

Play it as it lies my friends. Let go of the past, stay focused on the shot in front of you, execute to the best of your ability, and keep moving forward. Appreciate, don’t expect. Be grateful for the opportunity and arms, hands, legs, and eyeballs you have to apply to this effort.

BHP 067: Dr Russell Jaffe | Lessons From Science, Medicine & Buddhism Jul 11, 2019
    Show notes

The incomparable Dr. Russell Jaffe joins us on the Better Human Project this week.

Mentored by the highest ranking Buddhists, Dr. Jaffe has enjoyed unique successes in science, medicine, and integrative/holistic healing, serving as a senior scientist at the NIH for 19 years before walking away to blaze his own path and become a pioneer in what we call functional or integrative medicine.

We’re excited to share this episode with you, as Dr. Jaffe is one of the most fascinating people I’ve met, and in this nearly 90-minute podcast recording, his depth and breadth of wisdom is on full display.

We talk about the shortcomings of traditional medicine, serious skepticism, being proactive with our health and longevity – including the 8 predictive biomarkers to measure and monitor – buddhism, balancing science and spirituality, mindfulness and much more.

Symptom suppression is not the answer, sick care is not the same thing as health care, and treating disease is not the same thing as treating people. – Dr. Russell Jaffe

Don’t you wish every doctor – especially your doctor – prescribed to this philosophy?

BHP Shorts 025: Glory Days Jul 08, 2019
    Show notes

“The lowest form of conversation is ‘remember when’.” – Tony Soprano

As you can tell by the title of this episode, today’s BHP Short pulls a valuable lesson from Bruce Springsteen’s Glory Days, an iconic song we mistakenly regard as a party anthem at cookouts, tailgates, and other celebrations.

By engaging in this folly, we miss the cautionary message buried in the upbeat, hard-rocking music of this 80’s anthem.

The truth is, this song isn’t about the good times. Instead, Glory Days is about the passage of time, and how, as more time passes, more of our lives lie behind us.

And for the average person – the characters IN the song and many of the people jamming to that song at a tailgate – their best days are behind them.

My wish for – and challenge to – you is to commit to a life path that ensures your best days lie ahead of you, not behind you.

How sad, frustrating, even depressing it must be to realize that we’ve peaked, and that our best days are behind us.

This is the reality that awaits those who do not choose the path of growth and development. In choosing that path, our Glory Days sadly become a thing of the past.

No wonder the character in this song is headed down to his local watering hole to drink himself into blissful oblivion.

Alternatively, when we choose to pursue constant growth and evolution, our best days are always ahead of us.

May your Glory Days lie in front of, not behind you.

Most importantly, we talk about TRANSFER OF SKILL – how learning lessons in one domain have carryover to other pursuits.
