Mastering Transitions or The Nowhere Between 2 Somewheres

**This originally appeared as a post I made on IG last year and the concept of mastering transitions is something we touch on in the Better Human Workshops.**

    The Nowhere Between Two Somewheres

This is the space that most requires us to trust the process.

It could last 0.2 seconds or 20 years, depending on the pursuit.

Whether it's a new habit, a diet change, a fitness pursuit, or anything else, THIS is where we screw up most: the transition zone

The old no longer exists, but the new has yet to be born.

It's like flying through the air between two trapezes.

    Anything can happen.

It's the point of highest anxiety.

It's the moment we're most susceptible to old habits (neurological wiring).

The worst thing we can do when between these trapezes is freak out.

To flit and fail in the air or otherwise deviate from the process is to decrease our odds of successfully arriving at the new place (point B, somewhere #2).

We must remain calm and trust the process if we are to successfully arrive at the new place (point B) (Caveat: With more experience, a pro can course correct on the fly. This is not advisable for amateurs or newbies).

Prepare a solid plan. Trust it. Execute with 100% commitment. Get to the new solid ground as quickly as possible. (Then REPEAT for perpetual growth.)

F*ck those feelings of doubt, fear, insecurity. .

Stay the course. Trust the process (assuming you had a solid plan).

    Mastering Transitions and Change

**The following originally appeared as a post I made on IG last year and this concept of mastering transition and change is something we discuss in the Better Human Workshops. Since it comes up repeatedly, I want to share some of these thoughts as a BHP Short.**

    The Nowhere Between Two Somewheres

BHP Shorts 035: Anonymous Henchmen & Unnamed Wolves Aug 26, 2019

Austin Powers & The Wolves of Yellowstone

When wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park in 1995, researchers and Park Rangers chose to number the wolves instead of naming them. This decision was made as an intentional precaution to reduce emotional attachment and possible human intervention.

They understood that naming the beings increased attachment and reduced their ability to be passive bystanders.

In the Goldmember edition of Austin Powers, the legendary Nigel Powers (Austin Powers's father) reminds us that unnamed characters are easily dispatched, many times without so much as a fight.

"Do you know who I am? Do you know how many anonymous henchmen I've killed? You haven't even got a name tag! Why don't you just lie down and let me go?"

    The takeaway lesson for us:

The anonymous and unnamed are more easily discarded.

Our unnamed dreams are more easily killed than those with a name, face, and voice.

We can use this psychological phenomenon to our advantage by giving name to our goals and visions.

How many times have you - or someone you know - uttered:

"I want to do more. Other things. Big things. Great things... or "I have so much that I can teach others. I have so much that I want to share."

    WHAT ARE THE THINGS???

Be specific. Give them a name.

Giving them a name brings them to life and gives them voice and power.

Does it guarantee success? No, nothing in this life is guaranteed.

BUT, at least they won't be unnamed wolves or anonymous henchmen destined to be written out of the story without a fight.

Give your dreams and visions a name. Give them a face, breathe life into them, and make it exponentially harder to cut them loose or walk away from them in your moments of temptation or struggle.

Give name, life, and power to your dreams. Let them breathe so the sparks can burn into a raging inferno. Bring your dreams to life.

Ready to try it? Do this:

Pretend you're at a conference and the organizer has asked you to fill a vacant time slot on the stage. You have 5 minutes to prepare a 20-minute talk. What would your topic be? What would you share about that important topic? How would you positively impact the audience? WRITE IT DOWN.

BHP Shorts 034: The Rule of Thirds Aug 22, 2019
    Show notes

The Rule of Thirds comes from Major League Baseball, where even the best teams lose about 1/3 of their games while the worst teams win about 1/3 of their games.

What separates the “good” teams from the “bad” teams, is what they do in the remaining 1/3 of their games. What happens in those remaining 50 games determines the success (or failure) of their seasons.

The analogous carryover to the human experience is the lesson in today’s BHP Short.

We can (roughly) expect to have about 1/3 of our days go our way while another 1/3 will be struggles (emotionally, physically, etc etc), that’s just life. We’re going to have some wins and we’re going to have some losses.

The remaining third of our days could go either way.

What we do with those days determines the level of success and enjoyment we derive from this life.

The Rule of Thirds is unique spin on the timeless axioms that we control our attitude and effort, and how we spend our time and the choices we make dictate our fate.

By acknowledging that life’s ups and downs are unavoidable, we open ourselves to the opportunity to find the variables we can control, and the choices that awareness affords us.

What we do with those choices determines the rest.

BHP Shorts 033: Pros Play The Hits Aug 19, 2019
    Show notes

42 years after it’s release, Jimmy Buffett is still singing Margaritaville at Every. Single. Performance.

Think you’re tired of that song?

How do you think HE feels?

Yet, there he is… night after night, 40+ years down the road, still playing the hits.

We all have a tendency to downplay or move past our greatest hits. Maybe we’re humble, or maybe we’re searching for the next developmental opportunity…

But when we shelve the a-ha moments that got us here, we’re denying them to those who need them most.

Imagine going to Buffet concert and NOT hearing Margaritaville.

Pros play the hits. The ones the fans came to see.

Growth and forward progress is great. But don’t forget the growth that got you to this point.

What “trick” are you tired of performing?

What hits are you sitting on?

What hits are you NOT sharing with the people who need to hear them most?

Remember, they were game-changing revelations for us at one point. And they will do the same for others, if we bring them into the light.

    BHP Shorts 032: 120% is BS Aug 12, 2019
    Show notes

Let’s pretend you have a piping hot, mouth-watering pizza in front of you.

If I ask you to give me 100% of your pizza, is that a possibility?

Absolutely. (Is it likely? Not so much, but let’s stay focused.)

NOW, if I ask you to give me 120% of your pizza, is that possible?

    No.

Where would the other 20% come from?

If I ask you to draw a circle graph that represents 120% of your energy, can you do that?

    Again, no.

A circle – be it a chart or a pizza can only total 100%.

I use these visual to establish a common agreement, that 100% is by definition, ALL of a thing.

There is nothing more than ALL.

We can’t give 110% or 120%, no matter how HAM or #hustlenation we want to be.

Sure it looks and good on social media, but the truth is, if you can give more, you weren’t giving all you had to begin with.

If you can find an extra 10 or 20% to give, you were only giving 80-90% to begin with.

That’s the thing about giving our all… there’s nothing left in the tank.

It’s not about the label, it’s about the effort level.

Isn’t that all we can ask for from ourselves and others: Total commitment and full effort?
