BHP Shorts: Fear vs. Anxiety Mar 06, 2019
    Show notes

Fear vs. Anxiety is an excerpt from F*ck Your Feelings, as well as a segment of my presentation at Tony Blauer’s SPEAR Camp in Las Vegas last summer.

In our ongoing efforts to become our best selves, it is crucial that we understand the difference between Fear & Anxiety, and develop an awareness to how each plays a vital role in our safety and our behaviors. Are they controlling us, or are we controlling them?

    Fear Vs. Anxiety

    Fear = presence of threat
Anxiety = anticipation of threat (threat is not present)

Multiple studies show “pathological anxiety interferes with the ability to cope successfully with life challenges”

Fear also changes behavior, not just in individuals, but in offspring and can impact an entire species.

One studies saw rabbits (well known for their reproductive prowess) experience a 40% reduction in reproduction after exposure to threat.

The RATIONAL response would have been the opposite; to INCREASE reproduction to increase chance of species survival.

They didn’t. They allowed anxiety (not fear, threat was no longer present) to negatively alter behavior and potentially jeopardize the survival of the species.

We must understand and master anxiety + fear response to prevent them from derailing our performance, decision making, and ultimately, our goals.

Press play for the full story.

BHP 057: Ryland and Ryan | Better Human Project Changes & Updates Mar 05, 2019
    Show notes

In Volume 2 of our annual Better Human Project “State Of The Project” episode, also referred to as Ry and Ry, or Ry Squared, we reflect on and re-examine what the Better Human Project is and where it is going.

Changes are coming to the podcast and we lay them out in this episode. In short, we feel like we’re capable of more and we’re going to push ourselves to bring you both more and better.

More episodes per week, and “better” content. Tune in to hear us explain what we mean:

Episode #57 Show Notes w/ Ryland Hormel and Ryan Munsey

    • More (and better) episodes! Moving to 2 shows per week
    • Short episodes with Ryan (5-15 minutes) once per week
    • Produced/NPR-style episodes on topics vital to the human experience
    • Fewer long-form interviews – still doing them, but they won’t be the main “product”
    • Why? We want to push ourselves creatively and artistically. We want to bring you better/faster/more impactful podcast episodes
    • What? Socially relevant topics, topics that touch on universal human experiences: like trauma, vulnerability, courage, trust – and those are just the first 4…
    • When we started the BHP we didn’t want to be “just another podcast” – we’re examining what we’re doing; identifying the gap between where we are and where we want to be; and working to create a show that is closer to our ideal
    • Poignant – a podcast with a purpose requires intentional and purposeful episodes. That’s the direction we’re heading.

Strength, self worth, social media discipline, and productive habits all take center stage this week as we caught up with Ashleigh in New York City just before her first Human Potential Party to talk about maximizing our potential, creating the life we want for ourselves, while helping others and the planet.

Show Notes from Episode #56 w/ Ashleigh VanHouten

    • Ashleigh wanted to be an author from a young age. Her background in professional communications and public relations gives a fresh perspective on using social media and pursuing passion projects.
    • Writing is like any form of exercise. You just need to get down to work and do it.
    • How has technology and screen time hindered the time we use our imagination?
    • How much time would you spend on social media if you had to pay by the minute?
    • Working as a freelancer brings a whole new angle to designing the life you want to lead. Melding your passions and personal strengths to make money requires tenacity, original thinking and a deep understanding of what you want out of life and how you feel you can provide value to your community.

BHP 055: Paul Reddick | Toxic Goals, Discipline, Habits & Systems Feb 19, 2019
    Show notes

Paul Reddick has been a mentor of mine since 2012 and he’s one of the men who helped shape me into who I am today.

When I first met Paul Reddick in 2012, he changed my life. He’ll tell you all he did was change the way I think – and that I did the rest.

I found Paul as a business coach and leader of a mastermind for gym owners when I opened my gym House Of Strength. Like most guys in the group, I came looking for ways to grow my business.

What I found was a mentor who helped my grow into the individual I would need to be in order to impact the world in the manner I envisioned. That is Paul Reddick’s strength – his ability to coach others and help them develop into the highest expression of themselves.

7 years after we first met, Paul and I connected in New York to record this conversation that is loaded with lessons that helped me along with many new nuggets from Paul’s continued development. Do you future self a favor and tune in.

Episode #55 w/ Paul Reddick Show Notes:

    • After some bad math in a previous business venture, Paul started a mastermind to recoup some of the losses. Not knowing that, in the process he would find deeper meaning to his coaching practice and the ability to impact the individuals he works with.
    • Eliminating toxic goals(Copy, Compare, Compete) is essential to long term happiness and fulfillment.
    • Pursuing a “win” in sports is easy. Just score more points. In business the rules aren’t set and the goal isn’t always clear so the “win” isn’t easy but, it can be achieved in infinite ways.
    • When looking at a new venture, can you picture yourself being happy and working in that environment?
    • Find what’s true to you. Paul uses an exercise called 5-6-7 to really hone in on these core values.
    • Surround yourself with people who aren’t afraid to tell you when you look ridiculous. Or when you’re acting ridiculous.
    • Discipline Habits and Systems (DHS) produce your Comfort Zone.
    • Our default setting is to work hard. Most default solutions just revolve around more working. Understand that focus on long term results means knowing how to pace yourself and not get caught in an over worked – under productive cycle.
    • Paul has figured out what it takes for him to live in his comfort zone. After years of practice and cultivation his DHS have produced a detailed game plan and checklist for him to stay in the zone day to day and month to month.
    • Keep your workspace clear of clutter and full of things that inspire you. Learn to stay in the room. Use those inspiring items to push you towards your goal.
    • Writing and singing your “song”.
    • What does it mean to be strong? Vulnerability
    • What have you changed your mind on? Politics
    • Be Better: Serve the person in front of you.
    • Do Better: Crush every little thing you do.

BHP 054: Dr. Emily Kiberd | Giving People The Tools To Help Themselves Feb 12, 2019
    Show notes

This week’s guest on the Better Human Project is Dr. Emily Kiberd, a chiropractic physician, wellness expert, and founder of Urban Wellness Clinic in Manhattan.
Dr. Kiberd’s mission is simple – to optimize every patient’s health in a holistic manner so they (we) can live – sprint, lift, race, stand or work – without pain. Her methods to accomplish this are our focus on this episode – empowering individuals with the tools required to help themselves progress.
Dr. Kiberd’s expertise spans several therapeutic fields: biomechanics, yoga, functional movement patterns, and pre-natal.
In this epsiode, we cover simple fixes for desk-bound populations, considerations for better biomechanics in our yoga or movement practices, mental health, building your team, seeking improvement, and individual responsibility for our own development and that of the team.

Show Note from Episode #54 w/ Dr. Emily Kiberd

    • Dr. Kiberd’s clinic focuses on productive habit cultivation around functional long term tools to empower patients with their own rehabilitation.
    • The Essential 7 Movements
    • Desk Yoga for those of of us who must sit more than we wish
    • Don’t be this guy (at desk)
    • Simple strategies like those outlined in outlined in the cards above, or a timer that goes off every hour to remind a patient to get up and walk around, are just some of the ways Dr. Kiberd extends her reach to patients outside of the clinic doors.
    • Treatment of autoimmune patients focuses around developing strong fundamentals shaped after the Prague Institute/School? and DNS the same way we learned to move as babies.
    • All employees are trained in cultivating a growth mindset. Staff improv sessions encourage teamwork and communication while the book club gives the whole group a chance to learn new ideas together.
    • Keeping patients motivated starts with creating an individualized set of long term goals and mapping out the plan to get there.
    • After her father’s attempted suicide at age 19, Dr. Kiberd became committed to the idea of giving her life to service and trying to become a healer in whatever way that took shape.
    • If you have someone in your life struggling with a mental illness, don’t be afraid to reach out and offer your support. Sharing a meal or getting outside are easy ways to bring someone outside of their current state.
    • Foundational habits like sleep, diet and exercise have ripple effects throughout your life and day. Good sleep, balanced diet and regular exercise are, easily overlooked, baseline necessities for creating a happy life from the ground up.
    • Dr. Kiberd is on her way to a second homebirth. Proper physical training and mental preparation were her keys to success
    • Her work with yoga instructors focuses on re-engaging biomechanical functions.
    • What does it mean to be strong? Being able to choose a task to execute and being able to bring the force and power to execute that task.
    • What have you changed your mind on in the past year? Instead of teaching how YOU do something, ask someone how THEY would act in this situation and guide them to the solution.
    • Best advice you’ve ever been given?
    • Be Better: Always stay curious.
    • Do Better: Tell the truth. Your truth specifically.

BHP 051: Dr Gabrielle Lyon | Muscle Centric Medicine Dec 10, 2018
    Show notes

Get out your forks and pocket protectors for this week’s episode with Dr. Gabrielle Lyon as we dive deep on nutrition, debunk some common myths around protein requirements and meal timing, and explain why more doctors should follow Dr. Lyon’s lead and practice Muscle Centric Medicine.

Dr. Lyon is a board-certified Osteopathic Family Practice physician with a research fellowship in Nutritional Science and Geriatrics at Washington University in St. Louis.Prior to her foray into medicine, Dr. Lyon was a national semifinalist in Fitness America, a professional fitness model, and a nationally ranked figure competitor.

We sat down with Dr. Lyon during last weekend’s Strong New York event for this dense and informative conversation that finally debunks the common myths that we need to eat every 2-3 hours or that we can only digest 20-30 grams of protein in one sitting.

We also explore Muscle Centric Medicine, how muscle mass can improve health, reduce disease risk (Diabetes, Alzheimer’s, etc) and improve longevity. As Dr. Lyon point’s out, we’re not just over-fat, most of the population is grossly under-muscled.

And of course, we won’t leave you hanging without a prescription. We’ll give you the tools to optimize your muscle building efforts and dial-in your protein intake, including amounts and timing by looking at something called the Leucine Threshold.

Here’s what you need to know about the Leucine Threshold. The “threshold” is the minimum amount of Leucine needed to stimulate protein synthesis. A few terms for those without a masters degree in Human Nutrition: Protein synthesis means muscle building and Leucine is one of the three branched chain amino acids (BCAAs) that are crucial for skeletal muscle.

Our individual threshold to trigger this muscle protein synthesis varies from person to person, but also increases as we age. In other words, the older we get, the more protein we need. As the amount of Leucine needed to trigger protein synthesis, it’s somewhere between 2.5-4 grams for the average person.

In the chart below, you can see how much of our common protein sources you need to ingest to acquire this amount of Leucine (about 6 whole eggs or of lean ground beef, for example.

    Leucine Content in Common Foods:

    Leucine Threshold Graph:

Show Notes: Episode #51 w/ Dr. Gabrielle Lyon

    • During a tornado scare in Illinois while studying nutrition Dr. Lyon realized her path to service needed to be through the medical system.
    • After 17 years of study in Human nutrition and osteopathic medicine, Dr. Lyon is now practicing Muscle Centric Medicine which focuses on teaching patients how not to be under-muscled
    • Muscle is the largest organ in the body, the most metabolically active organ and the key to overall wellness and optimization.
    • Muscle is responsible for 80% of glucose uptake from the blood. The more well trained your muscles are the better equipped you are to clear sugar from the bloodstream (read: how to reduce Diabetes and Alzheimer’s risk)
    • Through years of observation in geriatric care Dr. Lyon witnessed patients who weren’t prepared for the aging processes by not having built up lean muscle mass
