    The Art of Charm

Explore social skills like charisma, confidence, body language and conversation. On The Art of Charm, co-founders AJ Harbinger and Johnny Dzubak break down the science of human behavior into practical skills, from owning a room and reading people to making a first impression and building real connection. Short Social Intelligence Briefings focus on one skill in about 15 minutes, and long-form interviews go deep with experts such as Joe Navarro, Chris Voss and Vanessa Van Edwards on body language, persuasion, influence and relationships. The Art of Charm has been on the air since 2007.

    In this episode:
We get listener feedback about how to deal with someone who laughs awkwardly at inappropriate times (from FMF 35).
Are you blind to the attraction signals that potential romantic partners are trying to throw your way? We talk about how to pick up on them extensively in the AoC Toolbox, but here's some short-form advice in the meantime.
You don't have to be a fashion plate to dress appropriately for life's banquet without breaking the bank. Here are some tips to cover the basics. (Also see Indochino.)
Now that he's trying to get out of his own shell, one of our Art of Charm bootcamp veterans is having trouble dealing with his shut-in best friend/roommate who prefers to remain a shut-in.
Being lousy at remembering names, faces, and conversational context is a problem you can overcome -- Jordan is proof! The keys to your kingdom may just be locked in your Memory Palace.
Being platonic besties with your ex may seem like a win-win scenario -- until you try moving forward in your dating life.

    459: Duana Welch | Science-Based Dating Nov 09, 2015
    Show notes

Dr. Duana Welch (@duanawelch) is known for applying social science to real-life relationship issues and is the author of Love Factually: 10 Proven Steps from I Wish to I Do, the only book that applies science to your love life from before you meet until you commit.
    The Cheat Sheet:
Learn the four Attachment Styles and what they say about you and your relationships: Secure, Anxious/Ambivalent, Avoidant/Dismissive, and Avoidant/Fearful.
How can you change your attachment style if you want to, and why do some opposites get attracted even though they're dead wrong for each other?
You should be pessimistic about being single instead of being in a relationship because it’s probably going to kill you faster than being in a relationship.
Married couples live with a much longer time-horizon than cohabiting couples.
Science is about odds, not about certainty.

Fan Mail Friday #35 | Just Say No to Drug Myths Nov 06, 2015
    Show notes

Welcome to Fan Mail Friday #35! No jibber-jabber, just a short show where we answer Art of Charm listener mail and give out mini-lessons for the weekend!
    In this episode:
What is the function of self-deprecation when striking up a new acquaintance, and how can you make people comfortable enough that they don't put themselves down while still valuing yourself enough not to do it, too?
It's great that you're making positive strides toward changing your own life for the better, but how can you draw out your recluse friend and share the good vibes, man?
When you have a great relationship with a significant other, it would be a bonus if your mother approved -- but it's ultimately not a necessity. (And if your relationship with your mother is also great, then she'll understand this -- even grudgingly).
You could always answer your boss' awkward laughter with, "I'm funny how? I mean, funny like I'm a clown? I amuse you? I make you laugh?"
When the other person in a relationship says that they need "time," should you wait for them or move on?
Laying out the harsh realities and consequences of drugs instead of perpetuating myths about them will be more effective (and earn you more respect as a parent) than telling your kids to "just say 'no.'"
Ever feel that you’re not sitting in the driver's seat of your own life? Here's a short video about the roles we fall into.
