How to Find the Best of You with Alison Cook, PhD Oct 31, 2022
    Show notes

Hey hey! Do you ever struggle with caring for family, friends, and co-workers without pushing your own needs to the back burner? Well, friend, you are precisely in the right place today!

My friend Dr. Alison Cook joins me on the show to talk about her most recent book, The Best of You, which helps us find our true selves while in relationship with God, other people, and ourselves.

During our conversation, Alison teaches us how to find our best and most authentic versions of ourselves in a way that allows us to show up for ourselves before we show up for others. Also, she details some of the ways childhood wounds, confusing church messages, and cultural conditioning toward women and their wants have kept women stuck, overwhelmed, and defeated.

Dr. Alison Cook is a psychologist and the author of two books, including her new book, The Best of You and Boundaries for Your Soul. For 20 years, Alison has empowered women to heal from past wounds, develop a strong sense of self, forge healthy relationships with others, and experience a loving God who is for them. Her weekly email and podcast reach more than 70,000 people. She specializes in bringing faith and psychology together to create real change in people's lives. Alison and her husband, Joe, are the parents of two adult children. They are based out of Boston and spend time in the mountains of Wyoming as often as possible.

Listen in to learn more about:

    • How Christian women internalize an unhealthy message of putting our needs and wants last (and how we can work to reverse it!)
    • How to identify the differences between selfishness, selflessness, and selfhood.
    • The signs that we have given up on ourselves and how to rediscover our voice.

    Favorite quotes:

~We think of Jesus' words “Love others as yourself.” There is an assumption there that there is a you that is showing up; that you know who that you is that you are bringing into relationships but a lot of women don’t understand or don’t feel like they have permission to do that work.

~When I hide myself, when I make myself invisible, when I play like a doormat, it’s not just bad for me , but I’m not bringing the best of who I am to the people I love.

~When I’m really being my true self , when I’m aligned with myself, I’m empowering other people which is what helps them heal and become who they really need to be.

~We are worth so much more than just numbing through all the various ways we can check out ; God wants so much more for us.

How To Explore Biblical Womanhood with Beth Allison Barr Oct 24, 2022
    Show notes

Hey hey! Today’s episode is a must-listen, friend! I am so convinced that this is 100% true I am bringing this conversation back from the archives! You’re certainly in for a treat as we revisit this powerful discussion with historian, pastor's wife, and author, Dr. Beth Allison Barr.

Listen in as we talk about her book, The Making of Biblical Womanhood, in which she outlines the definition of biblical womanhood and how it affects women’s choices about careers, their roles in ministry, their relationship dynamics, and so much more. Beth shares how biblical womanhood isn't biblical but actually arose from a series of clearly definable moments in history. Friends, this is a game-changer conversation for sure!

Beth Allison Barr is the James Vardaman Professor of History at Baylor University. She earned her PhD in Medieval History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is the bestselling author of four books including The Making of Biblical Womanhood: How the Subjugation of Women Became Gospel Truth. She is also a pastor’s wife and mom of two great kids.

Listen in to hear all about:

    • How to become more biblically literate by approaching the Bible with a contextual understanding of the time it was written.
    • What the Reformation cost women in terms of opportunities and societal norms.
    • Ways culture shapes our view of women and men in a way that women and men are not shaped in the Bible.

    Favorite quotes:

~Biblical womanhood is one of the most recent manifestations of the patriarchy.

~I think the cost of the reformation for evangelical women is that it made only one right way for us to be Godly. And that was to be married with children under the authority of our husbands.

~Culture shapes the way we view women and men in a way that women and men are not shaped in the Bible.

~There was a wage gap in the medieval world. Women made about 71 cents to the dollar, if we put it in modern terms. And here we are in the 21st century and women make about 75 cents to the dollar compared with men for doing the same jobs. I think that is a very powerful example of something going on in which women’s work is not valued in the same way as men. That women are seen as not as not quite as good as men around them.

How to Be Good & Kind with Rich Villodas Oct 17, 2022
    Show notes

Hey there everyone! Today’s episode is packed with wisdom and grace, and I just know you’re going to love this conversation with pastor, author, and speaker Rich Villodas. We talk about how we can truly become whole in a broken and fractured world.

Listen in as Rich invites us to ask ourselves two questions:

    1. How did we lose goodness, kindness, and beauty?

    2. More importantly, how do we get them back into our lives?

The answers to both are especially valuable as we live in our walled-up and often hostile world.

Rich Villodas is the Brooklyn-born lead pastor of New Life Fellowship, a large multiracial church with more than seventy-five countries represented in Elmhurst, Queens. He enjoys reading widely, preaching, and writing on contemplative spirituality, justice-related matters, and the art of preaching. He's been married to Rosie since 2006, and they have two beautiful children, Karis and Nathan.

Listen in to learn more about:
    • The five questions we can ask ourselves whenever we experience anxiety to protect both our emotional health and our relationships with others.
    • Ways to cultivate a calm and loving presence in the middle of an anxious culture.
    • Contemplative prayer and why it is important in our lives.

    Favorite quotes:

At its core, sin is failure to love. If Jesus says that the greatest commandment is to love God with your heart, soul, mind and strength and to love your neighbor as yourself, then the essence of sin must be the violation of that.

A calm and loving presence is a presence that is not driven by your action or reaction. It’s a life that moves beyond emotionality and reactionality.

Contemplative prayer, at its core, is being present in the presence of God. It is friendship with Jesus.

The fruit of contemplative prayer is not simply greater self awareness or self actualization or religious goose bumps, it is how can I be more lovingly present with people. It begins with us befriending silence, normalizing boredom and reframing distractions.

In this episode I answered this question:
    1. How do we view happiness in a positive way? How do I pursue happiness without harm? (32:50)

How God Stays with Matthew West Oct 10, 2022
    Show notes

Hey, hey! Do you remember what you were doing in March 2020 or what I call, the before times? We have come so far, and yet almost everything has changed for all of us in one way or another. Right?!

Today on the show, I’m joined by singer, songwriter, author, and podcast host, Matthew West. He joins me for a candid conversation about 2020, the pandemic, and everything that has turned our lives and illusions of security upside down.

Matthew shares his memories of the day the lockdown directly impacted his life in an unexpected place and how God used a stranger to comfort him.

During our conversation, Matthew shares stories, experiences, and discoveries from his faith journey of rediscovering “God with us” as inspired by the words of his hit song, “The God Who Stays.”

Matthew West is a five-time GRAMMY® nominee, three-time Dove Award winner, and a multiple ASCAP Christian Music Songwriter/Artist of the Year winner. In addition to his recording career, he has more than 130 songwriting credits, including cuts by Rascal Flatts, Michael W. Smith, and Casting Crowns. He has also written multiple books, including his recent release, The God Who Stays. Matthew is also the husband of Emily and the father of two daughters.

Listen in to learn more about:

    1. What happens when we have the opportunity to step into someone else’s story.
    2. How missed opportunities are a gift in their own right.
    3. Matthew’s “Summer of No What-Ifs” and how what he learned can impact our lives.

    Favorite quotes:

~You can’t quit on a calling no matter how many times you get rejected.

~It’s an honor to step into people’s stories and when you do that and when you focus on somebody else’s story instead of your own, your perspective on life changes in a radical way.

~Make the most of the one story that God has you on this earth to write and He is writing it for you so follow in to his plan and that’s where you discover life to the fullest.

In this episode I answered this question:

    1. How can I stay motivated? Because I find myself having great intentions but I don't follow through. (42:17)

How to Find Strength in the Holy Spirit with Max Lucado Sep 26, 2022
    Show notes

I have a question for you, friend. Do you ever feel like you’re drowning in questions you can't answer and problems you can't solve? Today on the show, I welcome back pastor and author Max Lucado for a conversation about how we can learn to lean into the life-saving strength of the Holy Spirit.

In this conversation, Max and I speak candidly about who the Spirit is, how he can empower us to be more joyful, and the ways we can overcome anything when we draw closer to God.

Max encourages us that while the chaos of our lives often feels like too much to take on by ourselves, there is no more need to feel as if we are walking this path alone. There’s also no more carrying weight we were not intended to bear. We can rest easy knowing that help Is here.

Trust me when I say this is another conversation you don’t want to miss!

Max Lucado is a pastor, speaker, and bestselling author who, in his own words, “writes books for people who don’t read books.” He serves the people of Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, Texas, and his message is for the hurting, the guilty, the lonely, and the discouraged: God loves you; let him.

Listen in to learn more about:

    • How Max has found strength and purpose through understanding the Holy Spirit.
    • The ways the Holy Spirit can impact our daily fears and anxieties, not just milestone moments in our lives..
    • Why God gave us an advocate in the Holy Spirit and how we can use Him as an everyday guide.

    Favorite quotes:

~Jesus described the Holy Spirit as our helper and our counselor and that’s when it dawned on me that that’s who has been helping me lately and that opened my mind with a deep appreciation and a better understanding of the Holy Spirit.

~Any voice I hear has to submit to scripture.

~The Spirit is always going to be kinder to you than you are to yourself.

~The Holy Spirit is the seal of the saint. He seals us for eternity which means that though I may not know much about what’s going to happen, one thing that I don’t have to question is where I will spend eternity.

~The Holy Spirit is our advocate. He knows exactly how to pray and he takes the groans of our heart and turns them into prayers worthy of heaven.

In this episode I answered this question:

    1. You seem as if you always have it all together. Do you ever get stressed out and can’t think? How do you stop doing that? (35:09)

How to Be More than Your Enneagram Number with Jeff & Beth McCord Sep 19, 2022
    Show notes

Hey hey! Today’s episode is a must-listen! Whether you are all-in on the Enneagram or a skeptic, there is so much to consider and learn as Jeff and Beth McCord join me on the show.

Listen in as Beth provides us with a framework - sharing how the Enneagram is focused on why you think, feel, and behave in particular ways. Friends, this is so valuable to recognize in our own lives and the lives of those around us. A game changer for sure!

We also dive deeper into their soon-to-release book, More Than Your Number, by talking about the importance of moving past often quickly assigned and sometimes stereotypical Enneagram Types. Instead, we can consider how our personality makes us so much more complex than just a number.

Pastor Jeff McCord and Beth McCord co-founded Your Enneagram Coach nearly 20 years ago. As an Enneagram coach, teacher, and speaker, Beth is now leading the industry in simplifying the profound truths of the Enneagram from a Biblical perspective. The McCord's passion is to make the Enneagram accessible for everyone, anywhere, so they can experience the transformation and freedom in Christ they long for. Beth and Jeff live outside Nashville, have been married for 23 years, and have two adult children.

Listen in to hear all about:

    • Why some Christians are so freaked out about the Enneagram, according to Jeff.
    • How you can use the Enneagram like healthcare providers use an X-ray.
    • Your Enneagram Internal Profile and the five ways becoming aware of your EIP can help you, through God's grace, better lead your internal thoughts.

    Favorite quotes:

~Anything that is not scriptural or Biblical from God's truth we are just going to throw out but let’s take what is still good and true and brings clarity about our heart; not for self help and to work on ourselves or self focus but it’s more about how we can align our heart with God.

~Your main type is your driving force. Your main type actually has two parts within it. It has a wounded child and a beloved child. The wounded child is the younger part of your heart that was wounded or traumatized as a child in some form or fashion and it was trying its best to survive. But what’s beautiful is that because of the redemption of Christ, when we trust in Him and receive Him as Lord and Savior, not only are we forgiven but his righteousness is poured out on us and God looks at us as if we are Christ.

~We want to help people understand that there’s an infinite number of variations for type and it should promote curiosity not stereotyping.

~God created us diverse but to unify and glorify Him.

~ The reason the enneagram is so helpful is because it gives us vocabulary to behave, think and feel the way we do.

In this episode I answered this question:

    1. I am working on being more self aware and raising my emotional intelligence. What are some negative thought traps do I need to avoid? (41:41)

How to Supercharge Your Teenager’s Mindset with Jon Acuff Sep 12, 2022
    Show notes

Welcome back, friends!! Today on the show, I’m delighted to have author and speaker Jon Acuff for a conversation about a soon-to-release book he recently co-authored with his two teenage daughters. Yes, you heard that right! He wrote a book with his teenage daughters! How amazing is that?!

You may remember when Jon was on the show last year around the release of his book Soundtracks. Well, so many parents reached out to him after reading it asking for a version for teenagers. He knew they were on to something, but he also knew he couldn’t write a book for teenagers without it reading like an adult trying to sound cool. So he enlisted the help of his daughters! Your New Playlist is a book for teenagers by teenagers, and I’m so thrilled Jon ran with this idea.

The things we believed as teenagers can be so impactful. It is so encouraging to think about how the teens in our lives can learn to create new thoughts that lead to actions and even better results. Be sure to listen in to find out how!

Jon Acuff is a New York Times bestselling author, an INC Magazine Top 100 Leadership speaker, and host of the All It Takes Is A Goal podcast. He has spoken to hundreds of thousands of people at conferences and companies around the world, including FedEx, Nissan, Microsoft, Lockheed Martin, Chick-fil-A, Nokia, and Comedy Central. He lives outside of Nashville, Tennessee, with his wife and two teenage daughters.

Listen in to learn more about:

    • How the truth grows like compound interest.
    • The ways our thoughts can work for us or against us and how we get a say in how they work.
    • The things Jon’s daughters taught him about thought patterns and what teenagers deal with today.

    Favorite quotes:

~If you are a parent it is good to listen to ‘absolutes’ from your kids because it is usually the sign of a broken soundtrack.

~There’s a real joy when you as a parent help your child do a difficult thing and they realize it’s possible.

~A good friend is an archive and they store memories and moments for you that in times of stress you forget.

    ~Nothing gets better accidentally.

How to Set Healthy Boundaries with Sasha Shillcutt, MD Sep 05, 2022
    Show notes

Friend, do you feel like you struggle to set strong, workable boundaries? If so, you are absolutely in the right place! My friend Sasha Shillcutt joins me today to discuss her upcoming book about overcoming burnout, learning to set work-life boundaries, and taking back control of our time.

Boundaries are essential in today’s world. And I think the more we talk about them, the easier it is to implement them successfully in our own lives. Don't miss this conversation as Sasha helps us learn that boundaries are kind, not restrictive, and being a person with boundaries is the most empowering and peaceful way to live.

Dr. Sasha Shillcutt is a physician, researcher, speaker, author, wife, mom of four amazing kids, and Founder/CEO of Brave Enough. Sasha’s greatest passion is empowering and encouraging others to achieve well-being in their professional and personal lives. Thousands of people viewed her TEDx talk, Resilience: The Art of Failing Forward. She also leads conferences and retreats for professional women, and her second book, Brave Boundaries, releases in the Fall of 2022.

Listen in to learn more about:

    • How Sasha defines boundaries and how you can live your life in a way that reflects your priorities.
    • What burnout looks like in Sasha’s life and how she flips the script on it.
    • Boundary backlash, especially when people call you selfish for setting them.

    Favorite quotes:

~A boundary allows you to live your life that reflects your priorities.

~The only thing that is going to allow you to fulfill that life where you put your energy and time where you want is boundaries.

~If you don’t have boundaries in your life, someone else will.

~When we set boundaries for ourselves, we are honoring the person we want to be. It is like preventive medicine.

~Boundaries don’t just keep the bad out, they keep the good in. Without boundaries our biggest strengths can become our biggest time and energy sucks and wastes.

~We have to be women who are approachable. It doesn't mean we have to be women who are always accessible.

I am so glad you are joining me for today’s conversation with preacher, speaker, author, and the head of global faith-based partnerships at Facebook, the amazing Nona Jones. We dive right into this one to chat about just how prevalent insecurity is in our culture and how important it is for us to recognize that toxic comparison is deadly.

Friends, you are not a failure because of someone else’s successes.

Nona and I also speak candidly about how social media is often our number one trigger in feelings of comparison, insecurity, or being enough. However, the truth is that social media often just exposes our insecurity rather than is the source of our insecurity. She shares her experiences working in the social media industry and ministry and wrestling with insecurity. It provided the connection of experience for her to speak about this topic in the soon-to-release book, Killing Comparison. Be sure to listen in as we discuss practical ways to conquer daily comparison - to live confidently in who God made us to be.

Nona is recognized as one of the world’s foremost experts on digital discipleship through social technology, motivating thousands of church leaders each year to reimagine social media as a strategic tool for ministry. Nona's passion and purpose in life is to demonstrate God's power to turn pain into purpose, a calling she fulfills in her career and alongside her husband as co-leader of Open Door Ministries in Gainesville, Florida. She is the proud mother of two sons and a Goldendoodle named Shiloh. She has also written five books, and is an avid runner and fitness enthusiast, having recently run her 13th half-marathon in Paris, France.

Listen in to learn more about:

    • How we spend so much time denying insecurity that we never get to the place of actually defeating it.
    • Guarding our hearts by guarding our eyes + how this principle relates to the story of Saul, David, and Jonathan in the Bible.
    • The importance of tracing our insecurity back to its roots so that we can begin to reclaim that ground and stop being triggered every time we see someone succeed.

    Favorite quotes:

~Insecurity is not about thinking lowly about yourself. Insecurity is really a question of what your identity is secured to.

~Social media more exposes our insecurity than is a source of our insecurity. Two people can view a post and one can walk away inspired while the other person can walk triggered.

~We spend so much time denying insecurity that we never get to the place of actually defeating it.

~There's something in our background, in our biography that has created an insecure foundation.

~Perfection isn't real and many of us are comparing our reality to someone else’s fiction.

In this episode I answered this question:

    1. What is the best advice to grow in a specific area? (43:16)
