Ep 347 – All Islands Meet Underwater with Doug Nelson and Jennifer Crozier May 23, 2023
    Show notes

Since opening the doors of BodyWork Associates, Doug and Jennifer have helped countless individuals achieve their career and life dreams. But how did it start and what did it take to open a successful practice? Kristin and Darren are joined by Doug Nelson and Jennifer Crozier to discuss why opening a massage therapy clinic is a viable career path, how community relations are the best marketing strategy, and why mentorship helps in building strong foundations.

Douglas Nelson is the founder and principal instructor for Precision Neuromuscular Therapy Seminars, president of the 20-therapist clinic BodyWork Associates in Champaign, Illinois, and past president of the Massage Therapy Foundation. His clinic, seminars, and research endeavors explore the science behind this work. Visit pnmt.org or email him at doug@pnmt.org.

Jennifer Larkin Crozier is a board-certified massage therapist, specializing in Precision Neuromuscular Therapy. She is a teaching assistant for NMT Midwest. Jen is a 2003 graduate of the clinical massage therapy program at The Soma Institute in Chicago. Since that time, she has worked with Doug Nelson, at his massage clinic, BodyWork Associates, as a protege and student of PNMT. In addition to a busy clinical practice, she has recently taken on the role of clinic manager to the 18-therapist practice.

Ep 345 - The Infinite Loop of the Obliques: "The Rebel MT" with Allison Denney May 18, 2023
    Show notes

The internal and external obliques may seem like antagonists to the untrained eye, but look a little closer and you will see an infinite loop that's a work of engineering genius and an example of exquisite humanness. In this episode of The Rebel MT, Allison describes why the obliques bring to mind a certain Celtic knot. Or possibly some pretzels—depending on your take. Rebel Massage Therapist:

My name is Allison. And I am not your typical massage therapist. After 20 years of experience and thousands of clients, I have learned that massage therapy is SO MUCH more than a relaxing experience at a spa. I see soft tissue as more than merely a physical element but a deeply complex, neurologically driven part of who you are. I use this knowledge to work WITH you—not ON you—to create change that works. This is the basis of my approach. As a massage therapist, I have worked in almost every capacity, including massage clinics, physical therapy clinics, chiropractor offices, spas, private practice, and teaching. I have learned incredible techniques and strategies from each of my experiences. In my 20 years as a massage therapist, I have never stopped growing. I currently have a private practice based out of Long Beach, California, where I also teach continuing education classes and occasionally work on my kids. If they're good.

Ep 343 – Walk in, Float Out with Brittany Driscoll May 09, 2023
    Show notes

So, why did the founders of Drybar start a massage business? Because they love making people feel good. In this episode of The ABMP Podcast, Kristin and Darren are joined by Brittany Driscoll, co-founder and CEO of Squeeze, to discuss why she made the leap from Drybar to Squeeze; why mission, philosophy, and culture are the backbone of the Squeeze experience for both therapist and client; and how being a female entrepreneur can disrupt a male-dominated franchise industry.

Brittany is co-founder and chief executive officer of Squeeze and responsible for, well, everything there. Before launching Squeeze, Brittany spent four years running marketing for Drybar, where she helped take the company from $30 million to more than $100 million. She also opened more than 50 new shops and launched the Drybar product line internationally, as well as in Sephora, Ulta, and Nordstrom.

Before Drybar, Brittany spent over a decade in marketing and advertising at agencies such as Mistress (Mattel, the Coca-Cola Company, Hilton Worldwide), RAPP (Skype, Toyota), and experiential agency USMP (Home Depot). Brittany believes wholeheartedly in the power of a great experience and is excited to build a feel-good revolution!

    Show notes

Warmth, competence, rituals, and good listening skills in the massage room will help you harness placebo pathways. In this episode of The ABMP Podcast, Kristin and Darren speak with Mark Liskey about how the placebo effect can be a positive approach to massage therapy, the differences between expectancy and learned association, and examples of what can produce a placebo effect.

Mark Liskey is a massage therapist of 30 years, CE teacher and provider, blogger, writer, and co-producer and co-host of the International Take Care of Your School event, a self-care conference for massage therapists. Recently, he wrote The Pain-Free Massage Therapist, a do-it-yourself "body-mechanics strategies and techniques" book for eliminating pain in the massage room and extending massage careers. You can access free instructional body-mechanics videos at his website painfreemassagetherapist.com.

Mark is also the creator of makethemostofmassage.com, a business resource for massage therapists. Access the free massage business crash course on the courses page.

She has recently been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and wonders if other conditions also contribute to her problems. She appreciates massage, but her massage therapist is worried they're not helping enough.

What can we do when we have a crisis of confidence? "I Have a Client Who . . ." host Ruth Werner offers a couple of important reminders about realistic expectations and the benefits that massage can, and sometimes can't, offer.

Ep 338 - The Knee: A Jalopy Story: "The Rebel MT" with Allison Denney Apr 20, 2023
    Show notes

One would think that the knee, one of anatomy's most used and abused joints, would have a little better engineering behind it. It doesn't. And there's a lot that can go sideways. In this episode of The Rebel MT, Allison details the anatomy of a knee, analyzes why it's so easily injured, discusses how to best approach it as a bodyworker, and shares the story of her own clunker of a knee, which, it turns out, is why she's even a massage therapist in the first place.

AnatomySCAPES—created by and for hands-on professionals.

As therapists, we want more than labeled charts of muscles, nerves, and bones. We crave anatomy education that informs our touch, and we want the know-how for working with the "stuff" in between. We want the whole story.

Led by AnatomySCAPES co-directors, and ABMP Massage & Bodywork magazine columnists, Rachelle Clauson (FRS Fascial Net Plastination Project) and Nicole Trombley (Equilibrio Massage), our in-person lab workshops are in sunny San Diego, not far from the ocean. We teach you what the tissues look like, feel like, how they move, and how they relate to their surroundings.

Your eyes and hands learn to "see" what they could not see before. Come join us in the lab in 2023!
