Ep 365 – Assisted Stretch Therapy with Ann and Chris Frederick Aug 01, 2023
    Show notes

Structurally, the fascia system suspends, supports, and enables all anatomical movement from skin to cells and everything in between. In this episode of The ABMP Podcast, Darren and Kristin are joined by Stretch to Win founders Ann and Chris Frederick to discuss Frederick Stretch Therapy (FST) and its origin, how FST can be integrated with massage therapy and other bodywork, and what the future holds for FST.

Ann Frederick is the creator of a manual and movement therapy and assisted stretching called Frederick Stretch Therapy (FST). Her technique was originally designed for professional football players in the NFL. It then evolved to the public to address common conditions of pain, movement dysfunction, and lack of flexibility. Ann directs her school of training in FST at the Stretch to Win Institute in Chandler, Arizona, and Toronto, Ontario.

Chris Frederick is an integrative physical therapist/physiotherapist, lead teacher of FST, practitioner of Anatomy Trains Structural Integration, and practitioner of Taiji, Qigong, and Taoist meditation. Chris has specialized in providing manual and movement therapy for several professional dance companies—including the New York City Ballet—and for professional athletes.

Former professional dancers, the Fredericks co-wrote the books Stretch to Win and Fascial Stretch Therapy, both in their 2nd editions. Chris also contributed chapters and other content for eight additional books, most of which are bestsellers in the categories of fascia, movement, and manual therapy. FST is based on original research completed in 1997 and 2017 and is scheduled for another study starting in 2023. The Fredericks are excited to share their experience and thoughts about the exponential growth of assisted stretching, what makes FST uniquely different, and how it is integrated with all forms of massage and bodywork to enhance results and success with your clients.

    Ep 364 – Sickle Cell Disease: "I Have a Client Who . . ." Pathology Conversations with Ruth Werner Jul 28, 2023
    Show notes

A potential client—we don't know how old, or how healthy—has sickle cell disease (SCD). There's very limited information about safe massage therapy in this context. What's an MT to do?

One option is to reach out to an expert and hope you'll get a quick but thorough response—if you get one at all. Another option is to check your bookshelf: you might be pleasantly surprised. (And if you don't own a pathology book, maybe it's time to remedy that situation—see some options listed below.)

SCD is a complicated and serious condition with lots of decision points for massage therapy: What are the complications, how is the person treating it, and what is their risk for infection?

Listen on for a short primer on faulty hemoglobin, collapsing red blood cells, and implications for bodywork.

My name is Allison. And I am not your typical massage therapist. After 20 years of experience and thousands of clients, I have learned that massage therapy is SO MUCH more than a relaxing experience at a spa. I see soft tissue as more than merely a physical element but a deeply complex, neurologically driven part of who you are. I use this knowledge to work WITH you—not ON you—to create change that works. This is the basis of my approach. As a massage therapist, I have worked in almost every capacity, including massage clinics, physical therapy clinics, chiropractor offices, spas, private practice, and teaching. I have learned incredible techniques and strategies from each of my experiences. In my 20 years as a massage therapist, I have never stopped growing. I currently have a private practice based out of Long Beach, California, where I also teach continuing education classes and occasionally work on my kids. If they're good.

Ep 362 – The Mechanisms of Back Pain with Dr. Stuart McGill Jul 25, 2023
    Show notes

The key to pain-free activity is to assess the pain mechanism and employ a matched approach. In this episode of The ABMP Podcast, Kristin and Darren are joined by Dr. Stuart McGill to discuss how he made the switch from lab scientist to clinician, his approach to identifying back pain, thoughts on "non-specific" back pain, and how he employs his "virtual surgery" approach.

Dr. Stuart M. McGill is a "distinguished professor emeritus", University of Waterloo, where he was a professor for 30 years. His laboratory and experimental research clinic investigated issues related to the causal mechanisms of back pain, how to rehabilitate back-pained people and enhance both injury resilience and performance. His advice is often sought by governments, corporations, legal experts, medical groups and elite athletes and teams from around the world.

His work produced over 245 peer-reviewed scientific journal papers, several textbooks, and many international awards including the "Order of Canada" in 2020 for leadership in the back pain area. He mentored over 37 graduate students during this scientific journey.

During this time, he taught thousands of clinicians and practitioners in professional development and continuing education courses around the world.

He continues as the Chief Scientific Officer for Backfitpro Inc. Difficult back cases, and elite performers, are regularly referred to him for consultation. Any product associated with this website has been tested in Dr. McGill's laboratory.

    Ep 359 – MT with EDS: "I Have a Client Who . . ." Pathology Conversations with Ruth Werner Jul 14, 2023
    Show notes

Are you a manual therapist with joint mobility issues? Then this episode of "I Have a Client Who . . ." is for you. And if you have a client with joint mobility issues, you'll want to tune in too.

My colleague Natalie Pendergrass recently reached out to me to share her experiences with being diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS).

EDS is a genetic disorder involving the formation of abnormal collagen. It occurs in 13 different identified subtypes, starting with hypermobility of joints and covering a wide spectrum of variations in connective tissue problems.

Natalie shares what it's like to receive massage as a person with EDS, but also the special challenges of being a massage provider with EDS. She developed practices that allow her to do demanding work while protecting her joints.

Natalie also recently started some contact points for people with EDS so MTs can get more of this important information.
