The New F Word- Ep. 3: "Meet the Duggars" and TLC, A Modern Day Freak Show Oct 10, 2023

Show notes

"The New F Word" is a sort of hybrid between "TSFU Presents" and "Binge or Bust?", where Ash and co-host Fallon Morey watch and discuss the Amazon Prime docuseries, "Shiny Happy People", about the Duggar family, their TLC show "16, 17, etc. Kids and Counting", the charismatic leader that they follow, Bill Gothard (a Fundamentalist Christian, aka "Fundie", minster), Christian Fundamentalism and topics identified in the series that they felt needed further exploring.
This week Ash summarizes the first episode of Shiny Happy People, "Meet the Duggars". In this episode, "the shiny facade of America's favorite giant family, and the ministry that guided their conservative values, is shattered, revealing a troubling reality underneath." - Amazon Prime
Fallon then tells Ash about "freak shows", and how, when and why they started. She also expands on Sociology Professor and Author Danielle Lindeman's idea that, "TLC is the home of many of today’s 'modern day freak show' programs". And the gals discuss why the network is so problematic... aside from the Duggars and their shows.
For the full context, make sure to listen to the first two episodes of the series first:

CULTOBER: Devious Dolls- Robert (2023) Oct 10, 2023

Show notes

In its fifth season, TSFU Presents centered around the world's most terrifying dolls. CULTOBER seemed like a really appropriate time to re-release these little devils out into the world, and for y'all to re-familiarize yourself with our behind the scenes team!
In the cold, dark January of this year, Ash was joined by audio editor Gaytrice Perdue and audio editor, researcher and now co-host Ryan Pregent, as they discuss probably the most haunted doll in existence, Robert the Doll! This child sized doll has been cursing people left and right since the early 1900's. Robert was initially owned by a little boy who had a lifelong "friendship" (obsession) with him, and after switching owners a couple of times, he now resides in the Fort East Martello Museum in Key West, FL. There are some rules to follow if you go visit Robert, and if you don't, you could be in for some grave consequences. Robert receives thousands of letters from people apologizing for being disrespectful or not following the rules, begging him to remove the curse.
We have our second annual TSFU team retreat coming up on Thursday 10/12 and we'll be in Miami so we're swinging down to Key West to meet Robert while we're there! Pray for us.

The New F Word- Ep. 2: The C, N, F and E Words with Katherine Spearing Oct 06, 2023

Kids and Counting", the charismatic leader that they follow, Bill Gothard (a Fundamentalist Christian, aka "Fundie", minster), Christian Fundamentalism and so much more. They also identify sub topics in the doc to look deeper into such as the abuse of women and children in the IBLP (The Institute of Basic Life Principals, run by Bill Gothard), the modern day "freak show" that the TLC network is and the homeschooled Joshua Generation that's being indoctrinated to take over the world. But first...
Ash and Fallon talk with Katherine Spearing, host of Uncertain Podcast and founder of Tears of Eden, a non-profit organization which helps survivors of spiritual abuse. Katherine explains the differences between Christian Nationalism, Fundamentalism and Evangelicalism before we dive into this complicated season.
Big thanks to the research team for this season, Fallon Morey, Peggie Brott and Lindsey Southerland! We've been working on it diligently for months and hope you're as educated and entertained as we've been!

CULTOBER: Patreon Vault- Elsagate, the Dark Side of YouTube Kids (2021) Oct 05, 2023

Show notes

It's CULTOBER day 5 and we're releasing an especially terrifying episode from the Patreon Vault.
This was a Patreon exclusive segment that Cam Dexter used to host called Dexter's Conjectures! This is a topic that more people need to be made aware of, and an especially important episode for anyone with young children who they care about in their lives!
Back in December of 2021, Cam took us into the extremely odd and disgusting world of the little known internet phenomenon called Elsagate. YouTube Kids says that it “provides a more contained environment for kids to explore YouTube and makes it easier for parents and caregivers to guide their journey", but unfortunately their algorithm hasn't been able to block out some particularly heinous content brought to us by.... pedophiles, people with really disturbing paraphelias, internet trolls and possibly a global ring of puppet masters who want to control and severely desensitize the next generation?! Or maybe it’s just pure greed. Join us as we dive into this dark and inexplicable section of YouTube.
Check out what Cam's been up to on her website!

CULTOBER: New York Noir- The Sarah Lawrence College Cult (2022) Oct 04, 2023

Show notes

In 2023, it's CULTOBER day 4, but on October 3, 2022, it was the first episode of the second season of That's So Fucked Up Presents, "New York Noir". Ash was honored to be joined by exoneree, journalist, public speaker, author and host of the podcast Labyrinths, Amanda Knox, as she told her the story of the Sarah Lawrence College Cult.
When Talia Ray's recently released ex-convict father, Larry, was brought into Slonim Woods 9 dorm at Sarah Lawrence College, it was under the pretense that he'd only be there for a short while as he got back on his feet. But Larry long outstayed his welcome with this vulnerable group of college kids, billing himself as a “truth teller” and "counseling" them, and one by one, sucking them into his evolving cult. Government corruption, molestation, mental illness, forced labor and sex work ensue.

Show notes

It's not a Listenersode, it's just an episode... but really it's our first annual TSFU Spookysode! This episode is with former audio engineer Evette Darensbourg, from October 2021. If you're a new listener you may have heard her sweet little voice pop in during the Cam episodes!
Happy CULTOBER friends, we hope you're staying safe out there! This week we have a special little twist on a regular Listenersode, not only do we have two spooky stories from listeners, but Ash will also be telling you about The Man Who Ruined Halloween aka The Candy Man aka Ronald Clark O'Bryan.
Cam was busy shooting her indie horror short The Recipe, so Ash and Evette read two listener stories from the UK! The gals tell you Mhairi's story, where they had a crazy past life regression hypnosis session as a kid; and about Emma, who lived in a council estate where a 14 year old girl, who was 6 months pregnant, was found naked and strangled on a church bench the day after Christmas.
