    98. (Part 2) Play Your Best Golf in 2024 with Lynn Marriott and Pia Nilsson of Vision54 Jan 04, 2024
    Show notes

In the second part of our conversation, Lynn Marriott and Pia Nilsson of VISION54 discuss the intricate dance of tempo, tension, and balance in golf, and share insights on how the right mental and emotional tools can transform your game.

Our guests share their own experiences navigating these three elements while out on the green, offering a relatable glimpse into the high-stakes world of competitive golf.

“You can have a great golf swing,” Lynn says, “but tension ruins it.” Mastering your swing's tempo and managing tension doesn't just come down to practice at the range; it's also about the stories we tell ourselves on the course.

We share practical strategies to enhance your golf performance, from intentional breathing to slow-motion practice. But it's not all about the physical; the mental game plays a pivotal role. Learn how emotional resilience, positive affirmations and realistic self-talk can create a narrative that propels you towards excellence, and discover how to remain fully present, giving you that competitive edge.

Finally, Lynn and Pia discuss how embracing gratitude and tapping into positive memories can not only improve coordination and decision-making but also bring joy back to the game.

About Lynn Marriott, Pia Nilsson, and VISION54:

Lynn Marriott and Pia Nilsson are co-founders of VISION54, a breakthrough program and golf school based at Talking Stick Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona. 96. How to Use RCT to Improve Your Indoor Practice Sessions Dec 28, 2023
    Show notes

Today we’re doing a deep dive into the intersection of technology and sports with golf ball experts Michael Fish, Senior Manager of Golf Ball Product Management and Matthew Hodge, Director of Product Development at Titleist.

Listen in as they break down their cutting-edge Radar Capture Technology (RCT) and its transformative effect on indoor golf, helping you keep your game sharp even in the off-season. Michael and Matthew share their personal experiences with indoor golf facilities and training tools, painting a picture of how serious golfers maintain their edge when the fairways are frosted over.

We discuss the exciting collaboration between Michael and Matthew's team and Trackman to bring RCT golf balls into the spotlight. These innovative balls feature radar reflective markers printed within—a leap forward in accurately capturing spin data without external markers. They ensure that the feel and performance of an indoor practice session mirrors that of a day on the course.

Michael and Matthew also give an in-depth look at the challenges of replicating outdoor golf ball performance indoors, and the meticulous testing process that produced a ball meeting the exacting standards of both instructors and avid golfers.

We talk about strategies to increase participation in club championships and the role of technology in scoring, and stress the importance of balancing fun and competitive play while maintaining the integrity of handicap indexes.

    Show notes

Today, Al and I are sitting down with Christie and Suzanne, two amazing women (and golfers) who reflect on their journey in the world of golf just five to eight years in.

Listen in as they share what led them to the sport and the unique challenges of getting started without the boundless energy of youth on your side, as well as their thoughts on the importance of a supportive community and guidance from seasoned players as they transitioned from 9 to 18 holes.

    93. The Business of Being a Professional Golfer with Hannah Gregg Dec 11, 2023
    Show notes

I’m sitting down with Hannah Gregg and Fredrik Lindblom, co-founders of Short Game Gains. Listen in as they talk about their suite of golf practice aid products, with a deep dive into their Signature Steel Putting Mirror.

Fred explains why he believes that any golfer worth their salt treats their game like a business, while Hannah shares how her educational background in journalism combined with her social media brand served her career in professional golf later on.

Hannah also gives an inside look into the high-pressure world of golf tournaments beginning with her experience at the Epson Tour Q-School. She and Fred share their strategies for dealing with the intense stress every aspiring pro golfer has to navigate consistently, highlighting the importance of routines, meditation, rest, having a coach, and being willing to overhaul your swing strategy.

    About Hannah Gregg:

Hannah is a co-founder of Short Game Gains. She turned pro in 2019 and went to Q-School. Hannah earned conditional status on the Symetra Tour and played several events on the Women’s All Pro Tour as well. In 2019 Hannah started to notice the difficulty and expense of getting various practice aids and wanted to find a brand that allowed golfers to get all of the tools they needed in one place–like a Golf Toolbox. And the idea of Short Game Gains was born. Hannah continues to manage the United States side of SGG and play professional golf full time.

    Show notes

Michael Leonard from the Wicked Smart Podcast joins me once again to explain what he didn’t do to become a scratch golfer.

Referring to going scratch as “the six-pack of golf”, Michael says that there’s no faking the journey to hitting that magical zero handicap. It’s a rewarding place to be, and anyone who wants to get into the top 5% of players needs to have a sound strategy.

At the same time, there are commonly-accepted steps that one shouldn’t take to become a scratch golfer. Listen in as Michael dives deep into every one of these misconceptions, from the pitfalls of obsessing over mechanics, to routine and short swing misfires, to the silly mind games we play that do more harm than good out on the course.

    89. Golf Wellness Series: Balancing & Tracking Hormones for Peak Performance with Dr. Erin Ellis Nov 27, 2023
    Show notes

Ever experienced a slump in your athletic performance that just happens to align with your menstrual cycle? Or maybe you've noticed a dip in your energy levels and productivity that seems to coincide with the onset of menopause? Today, I’m navigating this all-important topic with Dr. Erin Ellis, a naturopathic doctor with a wealth of knowledge about hormones and their impact on our wellbeing.

Listen in as Dr. Ellis unpacks the ebb and flow of a 28-day menstrual cycle, discussing what it takes to harmonize our athletic lifestyle with our hormonal rhythms. Dr. Ellis explains what you have to consider if a golf tournament falls on an inconvenient week in your menstrual cycle, as well as how to tweak your training regimen based on your menstrual phase to maximize performance.

We also discuss how hormonal fluctuations contribute to performance decline and how to alleviate common symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats with a combination of sleep, supplementation and—potentially for some women—hormone replacement therapy.

Dr. Ellis encourages women to listen to their body and challenge the all-too-common “everything is normal” narrative. From the benefits of cold plunges, infrared therapy, saunas, and curating your environment, Dr. Ellis shares a trove of wisdom that all women can use to create a holistic approach to their health.

    About Dr. Erin Ellis:

Dr. Erin Ellis is a naturopathic doctor based in Gilbert, AZ. She has found her passion helping women fix crappy periods, helping with hormone imbalances, and addressing why you are constantly running on empty by getting to the root cause so you can be your best version. Dr. Ellis is dedicated to spreading the modalities of Naturopathic Medicine to the East Valley in January 2020 where she founded Hope Natural Health.
